In disposing the book in position, one side "of the cover of the book is receivable under the strap 15, this cover being designated 17 in Fig. 1, the 'leaves'of the bookbeing designated 18. The other side of the cover, namely 14', is receivable in the pocket 13. It will thus be seen that the leaves of the book form an abutment against which the strap 15 engages and movement of the protector relative to'the book cover is practically impossible in this direction. In order to prevent casual displacement of the cover protector, the free marginal edges of the cover 14 are receivable in the pocket 13 in themanner hereinbefore set forth, and it will be noted that movement in any direction ofthe protector is practically impossible withotintentional removal of the cover protector.

In Figs. 5, 6, 7, and 8, I have'illustrated a modified form of my invention. In this form of my invention I provide a blank 19, said blank being folded on the creases 20 and 21 to provide transversely extending folded portions 22 and 23, respectively, the

I p i In applying this form of my cover to a book the back of the book is receivable between abutments 22 and 23, one-half cover of tlie book being-first inserted beneath the strap 26. The other half cover of the book is now receivable beneath the strap 28 and assuming that the book is of a thickness coextensive with that of the portion of the blank between the abutments 22 and 23, the protector willbe effectively retained on the book. Should the book be of a greater thickness than the distance between the abutnients 22 and 23, the abutment 23 may be folded into parallelism with the blank 19 and the cover protector folded on the crease 31. It has been found practicable, however, to manufacture these covers in different sizes to be employed with the size of book best adapted to the same and provision of the abutments 22 and 23 affords gripping and retaining means, being assisted by retaining straps 26 and 28. I desire to lay particular stress upon the manner in which the retaining straps of both forms of my invention are associated with the book cover protector, as well as the construction embodied, the peculiar manner in which the same is applied to a book not necessarily effecting the patentability of the various forms of my invention. Further attention is directed to the gripping and retaining abutments 22 and 23. It is, of course, to be understood that the straps 26 and 28, folded portions 2 1- and 25, the abutment 23, and the folded portion 30 are to be all secured with some adhesive material, such as mueilage or the like.

It is desired that it be understood that while I have shown my invention applied and used as a book cover protector,.it will be readily understood that the same might be illustrated for retaining photographs, postal cards and the like, this being the case particularly in the formof my invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4.

While I have shown and described my invention as possessing a peculiar form and construction, it is desired that it be understood that I may make such changes in the details thereof that do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

*Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: V

1. A book cover protector, including a body portion, said body portion being folded upon itself intermediate of its ends to provide an abutment for engagement with one side of a book binding, means included in the folded portion adapted to encircle the book cover adjacent to the bindingwhereby the protector is retained on the book cover, and pockets arranged upon the lateral marginal edges of the body portion of the protector for receiving the ends of the book cover.
