To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, Farm N.I*lnrn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Manistee, in the county of Manistee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Jewel or Gem Sets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to an adjustable gem set it being the object and purpose of the invention to provide a set for gems readily adjustable for different sizes. A further object and purpose of the invention is the provision of a novel construction by means of which such adjustment is attained in a very simple and practical manner. Va rious other objects and purposes not specifically enumerated will appear as understanding of the invention is had reference being made to the accompanying drawings showing a preferred embodiment thereof, in which:

Like reference characters refer to like parts in the several views of the drawings.

The invention as shown is applied to a scarf pin though it is to be understood that this invention is adapted for use in various other relations and with various other articles carrying gems. The pin indicated at 1, at its upper end is turned substantially at right angles as shown at 2, the end of section 2 being permanently secured by solder or other suitable means to the back of the upper member 3 of the gem set. This member includes a flat plate the upper corners of which are turned forwardly as indicated at 4 providing ears for engagement with one edge of the gem. At each side edge a vertical guide 5 is formed preferably by turning said side edges of the plate 3 to the rear as shown, said guides being adapted to receive the legs 6 of a U-shaped wire member, the upper ends of the legs being connected by a cross tie 7. In practice said legs 6 at their lower ends are bent outwardly slightly so as to diverge the purpose of which will later appear.

Coacting with the upper member 3 is a lower member comprising of a plate 8 also formed at each; side edge with guides 9 turned to the rear and at its lower end at each corner with forwardly extending cars 10 similar to the ears 4L- heretofore described.

In the use of the gem set the legs 6 are brought sufficiently close together that they enter the upper ends of the guides 9 the lower member being adjustable back and forth to any desired position on said legs, it being evident that the tendency of the legs to diverge causes a friction or binding action between them and the guide normally holding the lower member in any position to which it may be adjusted. The gem is held against ears 4 and the lower member is moved to bring cars 10 thereagainst at the opposite side wherebyit is held firmly between said ears l and 10 against accidental disengagement.

The gem or jewel set of the character described is, as will be evident, adapted for various sizes of gems and is very simply and easily constructed. and operated. Slight modifications of construction may be resorted to without departing from my invention and the gem set is adapted for other uses than with scarf pins. Accordingly, I do not wish to be limited to the exact structure shown but consider myself entitled to all modifications in structure and use of the same so far as permitted by the scope of the appended claims which define the invention.

I claim 1. In an article of jewelry a member having guides on the rear face thereof, a. U- shaped wire device having the legs thereof inserted through said guides and projecting beyond said member, said legs being bent away from each other, a second member having its front face in the same plane as the front face of the first member and also provided with guides on its rear face adapted to receive said legs whereby said second member may be adjusted toward or away from the first member, and frictionally retained in any position to which it may be adjusted, and ears turned forwardly from the opposed ends of said members, substantially as described. e

2, In an article of jewelry, a member comprised of a plate having ears turned forwardly from one end thereof, a U-shaped wire device permanently secured to the back of said member, with the legs thereof diverging and extended beyond the opposite end of said member, a second member also comprised of a plate, means on the back of said member for adjustably receiving said legs, the ends of the legs being brought toward each other to enter said means, where by said second member may be adjustably mounted on and frictionally held by said legs, and ears turned forward from one end of sald secured member adapted to coopersopiea of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the ate with the ears of the first member to hold a gem therebetween.

3. In an article of jewelry, the combination with a pin, of an upper member connected at its upper end to the upper end of the pin, spaced apart legs connected one at each side edge and at the back of said member, said legs depending below the member and substantially paralleling the pin and diverging at their lower ends, a lower member located below the first member, a guide at each side edge and on the rear face of the second member into which said legs adjustably telescope, and ears turned forward from the upper and lower ends of said upper and lower members respectively.
