Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 2%, 1129118.
Application filed June 13, 1917. Serial No. 174,529.
To all whom it may concern:
v in a clothes line puller and has for one of its objects the provision of a device of this char acter, capable of use for pulling clothes line, telephone and telegraph lines or any other lines that are desired to bepulled or s retched.
Another object of this invention is to provide a head slidable on the line and having means which is adapted to cotiperate with the head to grip the line.
A further object of this invention is to provide a handle pivoted to the head and having a gripping member adapted to bind the line against the head when the handle is moved laterally of the head. 7
A still further object of this invention is the provision of a clothes line puller of the above stated character, which shall be simple, durable and efficient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a clothes' line puller constructed. in accordance'with my invention,
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same,
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view, illustrating the pivotal connection between the head and handle, and
Fig. 4 is a top dplan view of the device.
Referring in eta1l to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a substantially arcuate shape head, which is provided upon its inner face with a. straight medial portion 2, having its ends 3 angularly related thereto. The ends 3 are provided with openings 1, the walls of which are curved as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The openings 4 are adapted to receive aline 5, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
A handle 6 has secured thereto, a shank 7, which is bifurcated. to form a pair of relatively spaced arms 8, which are apertured to receive a set screw 9. The set screw 9 extends through an aperture in the head 1 and receives an adjustlng nut 10, whereby the handle is pivotally connected to the head.
A gripping member 11 is pivoted between the arms 8 by pins 12 and provided with a semi-circular groove 13, the wall of which is serrated, as at 14c. The serrations 14: are rounded to prevent them from biting into or injuring the line 5. 4
In operation, the head 1 is applied to the line 5 as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, and by swinging the handle 6 laterally of the head as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the gripping member 11 engages the line 5 and binds the same against the head 1, preventing the head from slipping upon the line so that when pull is exerted upon the handle 6, the line is compelled to move therewith.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what T claim is:
1 1. A line puller comprising a substantially arcuate shape head having openings adjacent, each end to receive the line. a handle pivoted to said head, and gripping means carried by the handle and adapted to cotiperate with the head in clamping the line when the handle is moved laterally in the head.
2. A line puller comprising a substantially arcuate shape head having apertures adjacent each end, said head having a straight medial inner face, a bifurcated shank pivoted to said'head, a handle secured to said shank, and a gripping member pivoted to the shank and'adapted to force the line into engagement with the straight face did ice
of the head when said handle is swung laterally of the head.
3. A clothes line puller comprising an elongated head having angular ends and provided With a straight inner face to said head,' said ends having apertures to receive a line so as to dispose a portion thereof against the straight face of said head, a handle pivoted to the head, and a gripping JOHN G. SCHWARTZ.
