La i f7 ATTORNEY FFQQ LEWIS O. CULVER, OF FORTYFORT, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THRD T0 GEORGE W. CULVER, OF FORTYFORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
BOTTLE-CLOSURE.
Application filed April 12, 1917.
To all whom z'z may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS O. CULVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fortyfort, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Closures, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in bottle closures, and it consists in the constructions, combinations, and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a closure for a bottle which consists of a cap for a bottle which is pressed into position by a spring, suitable lever and link connections being joined therewith, whereupon by depression of certain portions of the link connections, the cap will be moved from the mouth of the bottle and the pouring of' the contents thereof permitted.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described comprising a bottle having guard and hand receiving portions with which a depressible connection joined with certain link devices cooperates, said connection and link devices serving upon operation, to move a cap from the mouth of the bottle.
Other objects and advantages will appear from the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a. bottle illustrating the embodiments and application of my device, and
F ig. 2 is a front elevation of the bottle showing the parts illustrated in Fig. 1.
YIn carrying out my invention it will be observed that a bottle 1 is utilized, the bottle 1 includingthe usual mouth 2. |The bottle 1 is provided with a pair of guards 3 and l. As will be observed in. Fig. 2, the guards 3 and 1 are centrally channeled as at 5 thus providing the upstanding portions which properly constitute the respective iards.
T he bottle 1 is somewhat depressed in the space between the guards 3 and a as at 6. The hand or fingers of the user are adapted to engage the bottle at the depressed portion 6.
A band 7 is clamped or secured in any other suitable manner about the body 1 of the bottle, and includes the ears 8 in which Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 19, 1918.
Serial No. 161,821. i
a fulcrum pin 9 is fixed. A bell crank including a short arm 10 and a long arm 11 is fulcrumed on the pin 9 between the ears 8.
A second band 12 is clamped about the mouth 2 of the bottle 1 in any suitable manner, and includes the ears 13 in which a fulcrum pin 14 is likewise iXed.
A cap 15 is fulcrumed between the ears 13, and in order to effect the mounting of the cap 15, it is provided With an arm or crank 15 which is suitably bent or formed that it may readily be received between the ears 13 as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
The cap 15 is normally forced into position upon the mouth 2 of the bottle 1, by a pair of tension springs 16. rlhe tension springs 16 are coiled about the fulcrum pin 11 and engage the cap 15 andthe fulcrum pin 14 in such Va manner that the normal closing of the mouth 2 through the medium of the cap 15 is effected as above pointed out.
A link 17 is joined to the arm 15 of the cap 15, and the vshort arm 10 of the bell crank. A depressor 18 is connected to the long arm 11 yof the bell crank and is disposed between the respective O'uards 3 and e. The depressor 18 is curved at its lower portion as atv 19, the tip of the curved portion being adapted to rest against the adjacent curved portion19 of the body of the bottle. rlfhe depressor 18 is thereby spaced from the bottle at the depressed place 6, and when the bottle is grasped by the hand and pressure is applied to the depressor 18, the various link connections are moved and the cap 15 accordingly rocked upon its fulcrums 1-1, and thus the mouth is uncovered.
rlhe operation and advantages of the bottle are as follows. 1t will at onceV be obvious that in providing a closure of this character, that no matter how soiled ones hand or lingers might be, the mouth of the bottle will not become soiled as is always the case where a bottle is closed by a cork. Obviously in attempting to remove a cork from a bottle the mouth thereof will be contacted by the fingers and thus become soiled. Diseases are not infrequently spread in this manner.
1n the use of my device, the bottle l is simply grasped at the place adjacent to the depression 6 whereupon the natural grip of the hand upon the depressor 18 will cause the bell Vcrank includingthe long and short arms 11 and 10 respectively, to be moved upon its fulcrum 9. The cap l5 will accordingly be rookedupon its fulcrum 14; against the tension ofthe springs 16 and Athus 1uncover the mouth of the 'bottle'. The contents of the bottle may now be poured `out and the danger of the contamination of such content-sisentirely avoided beeause .the mouth Y of the bottle was not touched by the hand. Y
