PATENT" OFFICE.
JOHN KOEHLER, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY. I
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 745,200, dated November 24, 1903.
Application filed April 26, 1902- erial No. 104,804. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be'it known that I, JOHN KOEHLER, of the city of Newark, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grips for Opening or Closing Jars, of which the following descrip tion, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object the production of a simple and inexpensivegrip for opening and closing fruit-jars and the like, one which is easily manipulated and consisting of a resilient clutch, an operating-handle pivoted thereto at two points, one point serving as a fulcrum, whereby the movement of the lever on the fulcrum in one direction expands the clutch and inthe opposite direction contracts the same.
Another object is to provide a combination implement of the character herein described having, in combination with the handle of the gripping device and pivoted thereto, a corkscrew and a can-opening device at the free .end of said handle.
In the drawings, Figure l isa plan view of my improved grip for opening and closing jars and the like. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with the outline of a jar-top in dotted lines, showing the grip in operative position.
or represents a cast clutch or metallic band, preferably formed with a rounded grippingsurface and pivoted to an operating-handle b at two points. The clutch a is split, having a short radial ear or extension 0 at one end and a long tangential extension or inclined ear dat the other end. The short radial ear or extension 5 is provided with 'a shoulder a, and the long tangential extension or inclined ear (1 is provided with the shoulder j adjacent and opposed to the shoulder 0, so that when the operating-handle is moved in one direction it expands the clutch, permitting it to be removed from the cap of the jar,
and when moved in the opposite direction it contracts the clutch, bringing the shoulders o and j closer together, thereby insuring a positive grip on the cap of the jar, thereby preventing the same from slipping, both extensions c and 01 being pivoted to the operating-handle by pivots lettered, respectively, 6 and f, so that the operating-handle b is capable of lateral movement and whereby movement of the handle in one direction expands said clutch, enabling it to be slipped on and off a jar, and movement in the opposite direction contracts it, so as to firmly grip the cap of a jar in order'to remove or tighten the same.
g is a corkscrew pivoted to the handle by means of lo gs h, cast integral with the handle.
71 is a canopening device secured to the free end of the handle,
I do not confine myself to the particular materials described in the specification, as other well-known materials may be employed without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having now described my invention, what I claim is-- In a gripping device of the character herein described, the combination of a resilient split band having a short radial extension provided with a shoulder at one end and a long tangential extension provided with a shoulder at the other end, whereby an even surface may be brought to bear upon the jar at the part at the band adjacent to the handle, and an operating-handle pivoted to said ends so as to be capable of lateral movement and whereby movement in one direction expand's said band and movement in the opposite direction contracts it.
This specification signed and witnessed this 23d day of April, 1902. v
7 JOHN KOEHLER. Witnesses:
