Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC HENRY W. BOGART, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
FRU lT-JAR HO LDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 723,980, dated March 31, 1903. Application filed March 27, 19021 Serial a. 100,244. (No model.)
ing had therein to the accompanying drawings.
In placing the tops on fruit-jars or similar receptacles it is necessary to hold the jar while the cover is being placed upon it. This is often inconvenient, because the jar is frequently quite hot from the preserves which have been poured into it, and for this reason a device which would not necessitate the operators placing his hands upon-the jar would be desirable. Devices have been produced for this purpose comprising an encircling band with a handle; but they usually depend upon the movement of the handle to tighten the band, a mode of operation which has its disadvantages. Many of these devices, too, are adapted to only one size of .jar or can be applied to different sizes only within very narrow limits. V p
The object of this invention is to provide a device of the general class described which shall be adapted to operate upon jars of different sizes with the same efficiency and to so construct the device that the tightening of theencircling band is in no way dependent upon the movement of the operating-handle.
A further object isto adapt the handle and the method of its attachment to the band so that a force acting on the handle has a tendency simply to twist the device without distorting the bando'r changing the substantial uniformity of its pressure about the periphery of the jar.
The invention consists in a certain combination and construction of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and definitely set forth in the claims.
In the drawings which fully illustrate my invention, Figure 1 represents the same in perspective. Fig. 2 representsa portion of the device in perspective.
Referring to the parts by letters, A represents a band, preferably made of a flexible strip of metal, such as soft steel or brass. Its
inner portion is shaped substantially in the are of a circle and is preferably provided, as indicated, with an outward offset a, wherefore shoulders a are produced, between which is mounted. an elastic shoe or grip B. This grip is preferably formed of rubber and is adapted to project slightly into the space surrounded by the band. It is preferably scored or roughened upon its inner face I; for a purpose which'will'appear.
An operating-handle 0, preferably made of pressed steel, which comprises forks or branches 0 c, is provided and formed substantially as shown. Near their upper end these forks bend outwardly, as shown at 0 and beyond this point'they bend inwardly again,as shown, respectively, at c and 0 The directionofthese portions 0 c is such that they may be attached substantially tangentially to the aforesaid band A. The portion 0 however, is provided with an inward olfset portion of", by which it is attached to the inner extremity of the band and forming a shoulder c". Extending back from this shoulder the portion 0 is provided with an offset portion 0 which is substantially in the same plane as the portion 0 and is integral with the handle. Thisportion c ,as indicated in Fig. 2, is pressed out of the portion 0 so that the recess or guidec is formed,-in which 3 is guided a longitudinally-movable draw-bar D. I This draW-baris provided near its inner extremity with an outwardly-projecting pin d, which projects through a slot 6, formed in a small tightening-lever E. This lever is pivoted to the portion a at the point e. The slot 6 is curved substantially in the arc of a circle and eccentric to the pivot-point 6', so that if this lever be depressed at e the drawbar D will be drawn inward by the eccentricity of the aforesaid slot 6.

around the jar so that the rubber grip B The extremity of the draw-bar D is provided'wit-h an upwardlyextending tip (1 for a purpose which will ap- I rests against its side and one of the holes a is made to engage with the aforesaid tip 01. The lever E then being operated and moved.
to the depressed position, the withdrawal or inward movement of the draw-bar D causes the band to be tightened securely about the jar. There is, however, a certain elasticity about the manner in which the band grasps the jar, due to the presence of the rubber grip or shoe B, which it will be remembered projects inward beyond the inner face of the band. The arrangement of the slot 6 with respect to the pivot of the lever is such that it maintains its position wherever placed. After the operation outlined above has been completed the jar is ready to be filled and to receive its cover, and the handle 0 affords means for effectually preventing any rotation of the jar when the cover is being placed upon it.
While the device described is expected to be most useful as a means for holding the jar itself when the cover is being removed or replaced, it is evidently equally well adapted for attaching itself to the cover, and where it is necessary to use considerable force in screwing the cover into place two devices of this kind can be used, or one of these can be used in connection with any of the forms of fruit-jar wrenches commonly used for a similar purpose, but which operate upon the cover.
As there are a plurality of the openings G the device will evidently adaptitself tojars of different sizes, which is most advantageous.
What I claim is l. Ina device of the class described, in combination, a band of flexible materialadapted to encircle a receptacle, a handle secured thereto, a draw-bar movable longitudinally with respect to said band, means whereby said draw-bar and said band may engage, and means for moving said draw-bar, substantially as set forth.
