JAR-WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 30, 1907.
Application filed August 10, 1906- Serial No. 330,017.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, WVILLIAM H. Maor and Josnrn H. WILBUR, citizens of the United States, residing at Carthage, in the county oi. Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in and Relating to J ar-W renches, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to jar wrenches.
It has for its object to produce a wrench adapted to engage with the tops or caps of fruit jars, or other cans of different sizes to tighten or loosen the same.
Another object of the invention is to produce a wrench that may be made cheaply, having great strength, and adapted to be manipulated in a simple and easy manner.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a wrench embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof. Fig. 3 is a view showing the wrench applied to the top or cap of a jar.
In the drawings, C indicates the handle, the inner end of which is extended laterally on either side of the central axial line thereof to form the corners c c to which are respectively connected the opposite ends of the wrench. The latter comprises a metallic ring formed of a series of segments or gripping links a, a, a, pivoted at their ends to each other, as represented at (Z, and a pair of lever segments 1), 1), between the handle and the segments a, a. The lovers 1), I), preferably consist of short arc-shaped links, pivotally connected, respectively, to the inner corners of the handle on opposite sides of the central axial line thereof, and at substantially equal distances therefrom, as represented at (1, their opposite ends being pivoted to the segments a, a. Thus there is formed by the segmental parts a, a, a, b, b and the inner end of the handle 0 a substantially ring-shaped wrench. By pivoting the links together and providing the wrench with a pair of comparatively short lever links between the handle and the gripping links, the wrench is adapted for use in tightening or loosening jar tops or caps of different sizes and diameters, it being understood of course that the wrench is limited to jar tops of a size which will it within the ring Iormed by the links when in their open position, as shown in Fig. 1.
In operation, the wrench is placed over the jar top or cap, as indicated in Fig. 3;the handle is then pressed in toward the jar to force the liver link, on that side of the handle in the direction in which the handle is to be moved, against the top or cap, thus tightening or adjusting the wrench thereupon. The handle may then be moved in the desired direction.
The wrench herein described and claimed is powerful in its operation and is adapted to tighten or loosen jar tops without breaking the jar.
It will be seen that in the application of our wrench, the jar top may be tightened and then loosened again, as when through some inadvertence it becomes necessary to immediately unscrew the top, without removing the wrench from the top and turning it over, as the handle may be moved in either direction, as shown in lull and dotted lines in Fig. 3, and either side up.
What we claim is:
In a jar wrench, the combination of a handle O provided with corners c c at its inner end on opposite sides of the central axial line thereof, and a 'Ilexible metallic ring arranged to encircle a jar cap, such ring comprising a number ol' segmental links, the end ones oi which are pivotally connected respectively to the said inner corners ol the hanolc and at substantially equal distances lrom the said central axial line thereof, whereby either of the links connected directly with the handle may be brought into close engagement with the jar cap accordingly as the handle is turned in one direction or the other, substantially as set forth.
