Patented Sept. 22, 1925.
UNITED STATES DANIEL A. ONEILL, OF PHII lADELPI-IIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINED PEN OE, PENCIL CLIP AND ENVELOPE OPENER,
Application filed February 12, 1925. Serial No. 8,639.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL A. ONEILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Pen or Pencil Clips and Envelope Openers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to combined pen or pencil clip and envelope openers.
The objects are to provide a device which may be used for opening letters; which will serve as a clip for holding a pen or a pencil, and which will be free of sharp projecting parts which are likely to be caught on the clothing of the user.
These objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which-- Figure 1 is a plan View of a pen having my device secured thereto,
Figure 2 a side elevation of the pen shown in Figure 1,
Figure 3 an enlarged fragmentary section on line 33 of Figure 1, and
Figure 4 an enlarged section on line 41: of Figure 2.
Refering to the drawing, 1 indicates a pen having a cap 2. My device is secured to the cap. It has a clip 3 secured to the cap at 4. The clip has lugs 5 at opposite sides of securing part 4. A letter opening blade 6 is pivoted to these lugs. The pivotal connection is made by a pin 7 passing through lugs 5 and through a corresponding pair of lugs 8 on the blade. One end 9 of blade 6 is used for opening letters. A spring 10 nor mally keeps this end in contact with the cap where it is not likely to get caught on the clothing of the user. The spring is coiled around pin 7 and has one end 11 engaging the blade and the other end 12 engaging the clip. The blade is pressed near its other end 13 to raise the opposite end into letter opening position as shown in dot-and-dash lines in Figure 3. This end 13 extends through a slot 14: in the clip where it cannot get caught onto the clothing of the user.
When blade 6 is pressed near end 13 to raise the opposite end 9 as shown in dot-anddash lines in Figure 3, it may be used for open g a letter or for any other like purpose When the blade is released, the coiled spring 10 will return its end 9 into contact with the cap of the pen. WVith the blade in this position, the clip may be used for holding the pen to the clothing of the user.
While I have described my invention as taking a particular form, it will be understood that the various parts may be changed without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth, but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination with a writing instrument having a clip thereon; a blade pivoted on the clip and having a part adapted to contact with the writing instrument; a depressible arm on the blade and extending underneath and contacting with the clip; and means connected with the blade for yieldingly keeping said part in contact with the writing instrument when said arm is in contact with the clip.
2. In combination with a writing instrument having a slotted clip thereon; a blade pivoted on the clip and extending through said slot to the inner side thereof, and resilient means connected with the blade and clip for keeping the end of the blade in contact with the writing instrument.
3. In combination with a writing instrument, a mounting thereon, there being a slot in said mounting; a blade extending through said slot from the outer side of the mounting to the inner side thereof; a pin swingably connecting the blade to the mounting, and a coiled spring around the pin having one end abutting the blade and the other end abutting the mounting for keeping one end of the blade in contact with the writing instrument and the other end thereof in engagement with the inner side of the mounting.
4:. In combination with a writing instrument, a clip secured thereto and having a slot therein; a blade pivoted between its ends to the clip; a projecting part on the blade adapted to contact with the writing instrument; an arm on the blade extending through said slot and adapted to contact with the inner face of the clip; and resilient means normally positioning the blade for keeping said arm and said projecting part in contact with the clip and Withthe Writing instrument, a respectively.
5. In combination With a Writinginstrulnent, a clip secured thereto and provided with a slot; lugs on the clip; a blade; a
depressible arm on the blade extending through said slot and contacting with the inner face of the clip; lugs on theblade; a pin pivoting the blade lugs to the clip lugs, and a; coiled spring, around the pin 10 having one endiengaging the blade and the other end engaging the clip for keeping the end of the blade in contact with the Writing instrument.
Intestimony whereof I. have signed my 15 name to this specification.
