JOSEPH R'QOERLING, F WAUSAU, WISCONSIN.
PENCIL ATTACHMENT.
Application filed April 30, 1923. Serial No. 685,694.
-To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JOSEPH B. GOERLING, a citizen of the United States, and-a resident of Wausau, in the county of Marathon and State of Wisconsin, have invented anew and Improved Pencil Attachment, of which the following is a' full, clear, and exact de' scription. 4
Thisinvention has relation to an lttachment for writing instruments and relates more particularly to a pencil attachment which will serve in a number of various capacities when associated with or applied to a pencil.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide an attachment of the character described, whichwhen associated with the pencil will greatly facilitate the work of a clerk in pencil checking and paging a ledgeigsaving of time for erasures and which will further function to provide a positive grip in writing, in addition to acting as a clip for retaining the pencil in a pocket. v
As afurther object the invention aims to provide an attachment of the character described which is extremelysimple in its construction. inexpensive to manufacture, and which is highly eiiicient in its purpose. I \Vith the above recited and other objects in View. the invention resides in the novel construction set forth in the following specification, particularly pointed out in the appended claim and illustrated in theac companying drawing, it being understood that the right is reserved to embodiments other than those actually illustrated hereln to the full extent indicated by the general meaning of the terms in which the claim is expressed. In the drawing r Figure 1 is a perspective view of-theat I tachrnent alone.
Fig. 2 is a rear view of the'same. I
Fig. 3 is a view illustrating the attach ment associated with a in the capacity of a. clip.
Fig. 4 is a view of the same when used for making an erasure.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view illustrating pencil and employed? the same used as a means for facilitating the paging of a ledger. Referring to the drawing by characters of reference the attachment comprises a tubular split member 10 which is formed. at one end with a laterally offset arm 11, the, free extremity of which is provided with right angularly bent parallel side wings 12 havlng earsor lugs 13 bent inwardly toward each other to associate therewith an eraser 14. The device is preferablystamped from a single sheet of resilient material whereby the arm 11 is yieldable with respect to the member 10 and the member 10 is of snflicient resiliency to frictionallyembrace a peni oil to which it is thereover. the member 10 is roughened or serrated as applied by engagement A portion of the outer face of at 15 to provide, when applied to the pencil,
a non-slip surface with which the index finger is engaged while writin or checking. When the attachment is associated with the pencil A adjacent the upper end or remote from the point ,B the spring arm 11 serves in the capacity of a clip for clamping engagement with a pocket C as illustrated in Fig. 3. When using the pencil for writing,
checking or the like, the attachment is moved toward the pointed end B as illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5, thus disposing the body member l0 with the roughened or serrated portion 15 in a position toact as a non slip rest for the index finger. The extremity of; the arm 11 which carries the eraser 14'wi1l f.
then dispose said eraser in a convenient position to rapidly perform its function. At
the same time the eraser will be disposed in I a convenient position to be used for turning -the pagesof the ledger as illustrated in Fig".
i From the -foregoing it will -tlius 'be seen that the attachment facilitates the opera- "tions of checking,'writing, paging or erasing, by slightly changing the relative" caltion of the attachment uponthe pencil, t erelabor ofa clerk..
I claim:
by effecting real economy inthe time and ,Anattachment for writing instruments,
comprising an instrument-embracing Inember mounted for longltudinalmovement on I the instrument and having an ofiset resiliarm isprojected beyond said end, whereby the Writing, erasing or paging may be accomplished without adjustment of the attachment, the said rubber also constituting a non-slip means for, engaging the pocket when the free end of the arm is disposed alongside the writing implement.
1r JOSEPH B. GOERLING.
