PHILIP s. MOLEAN, 0F BLOOMFIELD, NEW JERSEY, AND WALTER MEYNER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WRITING IMPLEMENT.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that we, PHILIPS. MCLEAN and WALTER MEYNER, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Bloomfield, New Jersey, and New York, N. Y,, have invented a new and useful Writing Implement, of which the following is a specification.
The objects of this invention are to provide simple and-effective means for enabling the use of a writing implement, such as a pen or pencil, in the dark and which will be lasting in character, and will not render the implement bulky or heavy-or interfere with its proper use.
Briefly, the invention consists in combining with the writingimplement, a self-luminous element arranged to illuminate the writing end of the implement. This selfluminous element may be in the form of a panel or hood overlying the point of the pen or pencil and may furthermore be combined with a clip, whereby the device may be used at different times for writing purposes or for securing the pen or pencil in the pocket of the user.
The various features of the invention. will .be understood more fully from the accompanying drawing, wherein we have illustrated by a perspective and partly broken view, one form the invention may take.
Considered in detail, the numeral 1, designates the body or base of the device, here shown as a sleeve or band encircling a pencil 2 and slidable thereon. 3 designates the illuminating element, shown as a curved panel, in the nature of a hood, extended from one end of the band and having a selfluminous under-surface 4, produced usually by coating such. surface with self-luminous or so-called radium paint or covering material.
The illuminating panel is illustrated at 5 as offset from the plane of the band and hence from the plane of the pencil or other support to prevent scratching. or wearing of the self-luminous surface in the shifting movements of the device on the support.
At the end opposite that where the illuminating element is provided, the band is shown provided with a holding finger 6,

' adapted to be sprung over the edge of a pocket. This adapts the device for use as a pen or pencil clip.
When the device is to be. used for writing in the dark, it is usually slipped down over the point of the pencil, or the like, as shown in the drawing, and when not in use for this purpose, it is preferably slipped back on the pencil to a position where the spring finger will most conveniently 00-? operate with the edge of the pocket. In the first position the device provides also an excellent grip for the pencil, as-will be clear from the drawing.
We claim:
'1. The combination with a writing implement, of illuminating means therefor comprising a base secured to said implement, an arm extending longitudinally from said base over the writing implement "and offset from the surface of said implement and self-luminous material on the underside of said offset arm and protected thereby from mechanical injury.
2. In' a pen or pencil clip, the combination with the pen or pencil, of a base applied thereto, an arm extending longitudinally from said base and offset above the plane of'the base to thereby extend over and to stand out of contact with the surface of the pen or pencil, and a body of self-luminous material carried by said longitudinally extending offset and overstanding arm and supported thereby out of contact with thepen or pencil.
3. In a pen or pencil clip, the combination of. a base adapted to be applied to a pen or pencil, an arm extending longitudinally in one direction from said base and offset abovethe plane of the base to thereby extend over the surface'of the pen orp'encil, a body of self-luminous material carried by said longitudinally extending offset and overstanding arm and supported thereby out of cona yielding pocket gripping arm extending from the base m a direction opposite to that of the ofiset arm aforesaid.
