' J. T. MAHONEY.
BOTTLE sToPPER.
No. 486,261. Patented Nov. l5, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEETCE.
JAMES T. MAHONEY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO EDWARD W. BRUENINGHAUSEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BOTTLESTOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 486,261, dated November 15, 1892.
Application filed February 27, 1892. Serial No. 423,013. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES T. MAHONEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bottle-Stoppers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following speciication and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a bottle-stopper formed substantially as hereinafter described.
It also consists of the combination and arrangement of part-s hereinafter set forth.
Figure l represents a side elevation of a bottle-stopper embodyingmyinvention. Figs. 2 an 3 represent vertical sections thereof at a right angle to each other.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a bottle of ordinary form, and B designates a sleeve which is fitted on the neck thereof and provided with lips C, which are cut out therefrom and inturned, so as to engage with the shoulder D of said neck, whereby the sleeve is connected with the bottle and prevented from displacement.
E designates ears, which are secured to the upper ends of the sleeve and form bearings for an elbow or other properly-shaped lever F, the upper limb of which has secured to it the cap or head G, which carries the cork, plug, or stopper proper I-I. The lower limb of said lever has a friction-roller .I journaled thereon, said roller being in contact with and adapted to ride on aspring or spring-plate K, which rises from the sleeve B and is secured at its lower end thereto.
The operation is as follows: When the stopper is closed, the spring bears against the 1ever F, so that as the latter is out of center said stopper remains firmly on its seat on the mouth of the bottle. (See Fig. l.) When the stopper is to be opened, it is raised, whereby as the lever F turns on its axis and the spring bears constantly on the'lower limb thereof, when the lever passes its center, it swings rearward to full extent restrained by the other end of the ears E, and so the stopper remains in open condition without liability to close when the bottle is overturned or decanted. When the bottle is to be closed, the stopper is pushed forward, and as soon as the lever has passed the center the stopper closes with a snap upon the mouth of the bottle and remains in such position, owing to the controlling action of the spring. The head G provides a convenient handle for manipulating the stopper H and admits ot' the removal of the latter when worn and the reapplication of a new stopper when s0 desired.
lf desired, the interior of the mouth of the bottle may be contracted, forming an inverted conical seat for the stopper H to rest therel upon. (See dotted lines, Fig. 2.)
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters y
