v Lapplication. filed vApril 2,
Beit knownthat l, iv-'rnoN-v J.' Soro, a citizen of the United States, residingatSan- Bruno, inthe countyl of San Mateoand State of `California, have invented newv and useful improvements in Bott-leer Jar` Covers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to closure means for bottles, fruit jars and like articles and has for its object to provide spring actuated clamping mechanism adapted to securely hold in position a cover oi' an article of the above mentioned character.
Another object of this invention is to provide clamping means adapted to be detachably positioned about the neck of said article for the purpose of supporting its cover through the medium oi connecting means adapted to be attached to said clamping means.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device of the character described which is comparatively simple in construction, economical in manufacture, positive 1n operation, strong and durable.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying' drawings forming a part of this speciiication7 and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same.
Fig. 1 is a sectional view ot' my invention,
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the saine, showing the cover fastening applied to a bottle,
F 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1,
Fig. l1 is a side elevation' of the device showing the cover positioned on one side of theA bottle, and y Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 5 5 oi2 1.
ln the drawing wherein tor the purpose ol: illustration shown preferred embodiment ot my invention the .numeral 6 designates a bottle adapted to have its neck en circled by a band, which hand includes circular arms '8 and, 9, pivoted 10, and respectively terminating in an apertured extension 11 and a hifurcated extension 12. Pivoted to the extension 11 is a connecting bolt 13 which is adapted to be received within the bifurcated extension 12 and secured therein against displacement by a winged nut 1e adapted. to encircle the bolt 13.
portion 27 terminating in flanges 28.

lnorder to be able vto swingthe-irregularshapedcover 15, to one. side and thlus exposeV themen-th ofthe bottle to the atmosphere,a yoke element is pivotally connecteditothe arm...band`sthrough the medium -oiffstuds 16, adapted to pierce the band through thefinner side thereof and vbe! received iin swi'fiffeled fb ars 17; wh-ichlfencircle the lower extremities; otr' the yoke element. This element consists of a pair of spring arms 18 and 19 having their upper extremities receivable within an internally threaded collar 20.
Adapted for vertical movement within the collar 20, is an externally threaded sleeve 21, provided with a knurled top 22. As shown to advantage in Figs. 1 and 2 a spindle 23 penetrates the sleeve 21 and is suitably connected adjacent its lower extremity to the raised portion 24 of the cover 15.
Positioned beneath the sleeve 21 and encircling the spindle 23 is a cap 2e which serves to house one end of a spiral spring 25, which spring has its opposite end encircling the raised portion 24 of the cover 15. By referring to Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawing it will be apparent that upon the swinging ot the yoke to one side in order to uncover the bottle, the spring 25 will, be compressed and partly housed in the cap 24. rlhe cover 15 in addition to the raised portion 2&1- comprises an outer annular portion grooved at 2G and an inner annular grooved p n the outer annular portion l have provided an annular gasket or washer 2S which rests upon the top ot' the bottle and serves to make the same air tight. F or the purpose of retaining the spring arms 18 and 19 in a fixed position, have riveted to the top of the cover bifurcated fingers 31 and 82 adapted to receive therein the spring arms 18 and 19. y
l? rom the foregoing descriiiition it is apparent that lf have provided a cover fastening which can readily be disposed on the top ot a bott-le or like article to render the same air tight, and it will he further evident that i have provided. means for retaining the cover on the neck of the bottle whereby the cover will be in position for a quick adjusty ment over the top of the bottle when this operation is desired.
1t is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described, is to be taken as preferred example ot the same, and that various changes in the shape,
, two semi-circular portions hinged one to they other, `means for detachably securing the free ends of said semicircular band portion,
pivoted barssecured to said bands at points diametrically opposite, a substantially U shaped yoke having its extremities secured' in said pivoted bars, a collar securedin said yoke, said collar being integrally threaded, a cover having annular rings formed there'- in, fingers secured on `said cover and adapted to Contact said yoke, a gasket mounted in one of said annular rings, a stern secured to said cover, a vscrew threadedsleeve adapted lto be threaded in the said collar, means for rotating said sleeve, al cap surroundlngsald stem and abutting said sleeve, a spring mounted between said cap and Said cover for v the purpose of holding said cover 1n contactk with Said bottle.
In testimony whereof aliX my Signaturav
