Description

' PATENTED OCT. 29. 1907 S. E. FRIEND.
OIL GAN.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 4, 1907 atbozmma THE Nomzls PErsxs ca, wAsNm-cros. vA c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL E. FRIEND, OF STEUBIN'VILLE, OHIO.
OIL-CAN.
Application filed May 4| To all whom it may com-em:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. FRIEND, a citizen oi the United States, residing at Steubenville, in the county oi Jefferson and State or' Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Cans, oi' which the ollowing is a specification.
The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction oi oil cans, and resides principally in the provision oi a can body formed with a plurality ot' compartments designed to receive different kinds oi oil, all the compartments discharging through a common spout and novel means being provided for controlling the discharge oi the oil from the various compartments.
The object oi the invention is to provide a can oi this character which is simple and desirable in its construction and which owing to its peculiar design enables the operator to have at all times positive control oi the dis charge of the oil lfrom the various compartments.
For a full description ofthe invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details oi construct-ion and the means ior eiecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view oi an oil can constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line ,cc-rv oi Fig. 2.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views oi the drawings by the same reference characters.
Specifically describing the present embodiment oi the invention the numeral l designates the body portion oi the oil can to which is applied the discharge spout 2. A partition 3 divides the interior oi the body portion l into a plurality oi compartments 4i and 5 which are designed to receive different kinds of lubrieating material such as engine oil and cylinder oil. Two distinct channels 6 and 7 are also formed in the discharge spout 2 by means oi a partition S, the channel G forming an outlet tor the compartment 4i and the channel 7 `lor the compartment 5. The discharge spout 2 is separated from the body portion l by means oi' a transverse wall ormed with a tubular casing 9, said casing being provided with a plurality of sets oi corresponding openings l0 and l1 designed to establish conimunication between the various compartments in the body portion oi the can and the corresponding channels in the discharge spout. A valve is mounted within the casing 9 to control the discharge from the various compartments and in the present instance the valve is in the nature of a plunger 12 which is slidably Specification of Letters Patent.

mounted within the casing and is formed with openings 13 and 'i9 designed to register respectively with l the openings l0 and Il in the 'asing when it is desired I to open communication between either of the compartments and the corresponding channel in the spout.
One end oi the plunger vl2 carries a head lli, a coil spring 115 being interposed between the head and the I end oi' the casing and normally holding the plunger l2 l in such a position that the opening VL3 is out oi alinement with the openings l0 in the casing whereas the opening i9 registers with the openings '.ll whereby the latter are unobstructed and the oil within the compartment 5 can pass reely through the discharge spout. The open end ol' the casing 9 is closed by a cap 2O which also forms a housing lor the spring l5. A linger lever i6 is employed [or manipulating the plunger l2, one end oi the linger' lever being pivotally mounted upon a bracket `l7 while the opposite end extends toward the handle i8 oi the oil can so as to be readily operated by the thumb. With the present construction it will be readily apparent that in the normal position oi' the valve the oil in the compartment 5 can be readily discharged through the spout in the usual manner, and that should it be desired to withdraw the oil from the compartment l the desired result can be readily accomplished by pressing inwardly upon the linger lever i6 and operating the plunger to draw the opening 13 into alineinent with the openings IOand move the opening' It) out ol' registry with the openings ll so as to sluit ol'i communication between the compartment 5 and the discharge spout.
IIaving thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
l. In a device oi" the character' described, the combination oi a body portion i'ornied with :i plurality oi compartments, a common discharge spout for the compartments, a wall separating the spout from the compartments and i'ormed with :i tubular casing having :i plurality of sets oi openings therein for establishing communication between the various compartments and the discharge spout. a plunger slidably mounted within the casing und provided vwith n plurality olf openings correspoinling to the beiore mentioned sets ol' openings in the tubular casing. and means tor operating the plunger.
L. ln a device ol the character described, the combination of a body portion formed with a plurality oi compartments. a common discharge spout ior the compartments, a wall separating the spout from the compartments and i'ormed with a tubular casing' having sets of openings therein for establishingcommunication between the various compartments :ind the discharge spout, a plunger slidably mounted within the casing,` to control the openings, the said plunger carrying a head, a spring`- bearing against the head to hold the plunger in a predetermined position, and means ior operating the plunger.
