OILING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 606,303, dated June 28, 1898.

Be it known that I, JosIAH SCOTT SCAR- BOROUGH, aA citizen of the United States, residing at New Philadelphia, in the county of Tuscarawas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oiling Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a novel form of o iling device for vehicles and general machine use; and the object is to provide a simple, iuexpensive,and convenient oiler of this class.
To this end the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be'hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure l is a vertical section ot' a portable oil-Can embodying my invention. Fig. 2 isa modification of the same, showing the discharge-spout applied to a monkey-wrench. Fig. 3 is another modiication showing the discharge-spout applied to a socket-wrench. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section of the oil-can shown in Fig. l. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the valve-sleeve.
l represents the oil-can, provided with a vertical concentric tube 2 and a fixed internally-threaded collar 3.
4 4 represent four radial partitions which divide the can into four oil-compartments 5 6 7 8.
9 10 11 12 represent outlet-orifices in the tube 2, one of which connects said tube with each of the compartments.
13 represents a valve-stem provided with a centrally-fixed ball-valve 14 and having a sliding movement in the oppositely-disposed orifices 9 and ll, and 15 represents a similar valve-stem, also provided With a centrallyfixed ball-valve 16 and having a corresponding movement in the. orifices l0 12.
17 represents the discharge-spout, comprising a detachable sleeve which is threaded at its lower end to engage a threaded collar 1S on the upper end of a valve-tube 37. .An oiltube 20, provided with a beveled outer end 2l and a head 19 at its lower end, slides in said sleeve, and 23 represents a cylindrical plunger secured to the head 19 of said 'oiltube and provided with an internal valveseat 24, which receives the disk valve 25, the stem 26 of which extends through the loose sleeve 27 and through an enlarged orifice 23 in the bottom head 29 of the valve-chamber 37, its projecting threaded end being provided with a bar-nut 30, which holds the valve in its seat and at the same timel permits an unobstructed passage for the oil through the oriiice 28.

The sleeve 27 is loosely mounted on the valve-stem 26, and its outer end is provided with beveled sides 34 35, which permit the free passageof the oil Vthrough the orifice in the plunger,'\vhile its inner end is tapering in form to readily enter the orifice 2S in the head 29, and the diameter of the sleeve is such as to snugly fit said orifice 28 and cut off the supply of oil from the can. The operation of the device is such that the oil in the can flows into the central tube 2 and fills the valvechamber 37, and if the beveled end 2l of the oil-tube 2O be placed against a solid object or point to be lubricated and pressure applied to the can the plunger will be forced hack- Ward in the chamber 37, so as to recede from the valve 25 and `positively force the oil through the oil-tube 2O and discharge it at its outer end, the sleeve 27 in the meantime closing the orifice 28 and preventing the exitof the oil in that direction. As soon as the pressure is released from the can the spring 33 restores the plunger to its normal position. and the chamber 37 is again filled with oil from the tube 2 and is ready for operation.
It will be observed that in Whatever horizontal position the can be held the oriice in the bottom compartment will be closed by the ball-valve and the corresponding orifice in the uppermost compartment opened to permit the oil to flow by gravity into the ,tube 2.
Figs. 2 and 3 show, respectively, a monkeywrench and a socket-wrench embodying my improved oiling device. In these figures 1n represents the hollow handle of the wrench, which forms the oil reservoir. 17 is the sleeve threaded onto the handle and provided with the discharge-tube 20. 31 32 represent the elastic packing-ring and disk or follower; 27, the sleeve; 24, the valve having the stem, and 33 the spiral spring for normally holding the valve closed. The operation of the oiling attachment in these constructions is essentially the same as in Fig. 1, the only difference in construction being that the sleeve 17 forms the valve-chamber. The socket-wrench shown in Fig. 3 is provided on one of the inner sides oit' its socket-head 38 with a plate-spring 39, which serves to clamp the nut in the socket after it has been detached from thelaxle.
Although I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of my invention, I do not desire to be confined to the same, as such changes or modifications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent ot the United States, 1s-
l. A detachable discharge-spout for oil-receptacles, comprising the cylindrical sleeve 17, the oil-tube 20, the plunger 23 connected therewith and provided with the valve-seat 24 and the valve 25, provided with the stem 26 provided with t-he bar-nut 30, the sleeve 27 loosely encompassing said stem and the spiral spring 33 encompassing said stem and sleeve and holding said plunger in contact with said valve, substantially as shown and described.
2. A portable oiler, comprising the can 1 provided with the central concentric tube 2,
the lateral com partmcnts and an independent oriiice for each compartment communicating with the central tube 2, and a gravity-valve adapted to simultaneously close one compartment and open the opposite compartment, in combination with adischarge-spout communieating with the tube 2, a plunger mounted in said spout, a valve mounted in said plunger, and means substantially as described for operating said plunger to positively discharge the oil through said spout, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In oiling devices, an oil reservoir, a valve-chamber attachably secured to one end thereof, a plunger-spout or discharge-tube sliding therein, a valve controlling the iiow of oil therethrough, a stern attached to said valve and extending through said tube, a
sleeve connected with said stem, a spring acting on said sleeve and stem, and means for adjusting said valve-stem, substantially as described.
4. A portable oiler comprising a can 1 provided with the central concentric tube 2 and radial walls 4 forming lateral compartments, each of said walls being provided with a discharge-orifice, gravity-valves controlling said oriiices, a cylindrical sleeve 17, an oil-tube 20 sliding-therein, a plunger 23 connected with said oil-tube and provided with a valve-seat 211 and a valve 25 having a stein 26, a sleeve 27 loosely encompassing said stem, and a spiral spring 33 encompassing` said stem and sleeve 27 and adapted to hold said plunger in contact with said valve, substantially as described.
