To all whom it may concern:
-Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. BLAIR, a citizen of the United States, residing at W ellsburg, in the county of Brooke and State of West Virginia, have invented cer-. taiii new and useful Improvements in Oil- Cans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lubricating devices and more particularly to an improved oil can especially adapted to rapidly d 1spense oil and lubricant without the necessity of manually exerting a pressure on the container.
One of the principal objects of the lnven tion is to provide an improved oil container having mechanism for maintaining the contents of the container constantly under a pressure so that when suitable valve mechanism included in the device is released, the contents of the container will be forcibly ejected.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction, but durable and Well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarily subjected.
For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which v Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the device constructed in accordance with my invention.

Ref erring to the drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the container 1 is constructed of any preferred material and is of cylindrical formation having its upper end closed by the removable top 2, the center of which carries the nipple 3 through the center of which the oil may be ejected. The lower or bottom end of the container is closed by the Specification of Letters Patent.

This opening is adapted to receive the screw threaded shank 6 of an adjustable stud, the outer end of which has a knob 7 .whereb the stud may be manually adjusted into and out'of the container. The interior end of the stud 6 is pivotally connected to-a latch 8 which is normally urged into 'operative position by a flat spring 9 carried by the stud and having its end engaged with the latch as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Mounted for sliding movement within the container is a piston- 10 which also forms an ejector for the contents of the container and this piston is provided at its center with a pin 11 fixedly held to the piston and having one end extended from the'bottom thereof and provided with a rounded head 12, which as shown to advantage in Fig. 2, is adapted to be' engaged by the latch 8 when the piston is pressed into close proximity to the bottom of the container. Interposed between the bottom of the container and the piston 10 is a coil-expansion spring '13 which normally tendsto urge the piston upwardly to eject the con tents of the container.

As shown to advantage in Fig. 3, the plug 16 carries a pin 19 movable through a recess 20 formed in the valve casing, the recess being of arcuate formation and of a length equal to one quarter of the circumference of the plug whereby only-a quarter turn can be given to the plug in either direction.
A coil spring 21 ismounted upon the handle and has one end fixed to the casing while the other end is-joined to the handle for the purpose of moving the handle to inoperative position for closing the valve after the operator has moved the valve to open position. In this manner the valve will always close after'the operator has released 'his finger from the handle.

The foregoing description and accompanying drawings have reference to what might be considered to be the preferred or approved form of my invention. I desire it to be understood that I may make such changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A lubricator of the character described comprising a container having a bottom wall provided with a centrally located adjustable stud having its outer end carrying a knob and its inner end extended into the interior of the container and-carrying apivoted latch, a spring member engaged with v the latch to normally urge the latch into operative position, a piston spring-pressed within the container and carrying a pin provided with a headadapted to be engaged by the said latchl when the piston is in lowermost position, the said latch being. disposed at one side of the knob whereby a turn given to the said knob on the stud will disengage the latch from the head to permit the spring pressed piston to be released for movenrnt through the said container.

3. The combination with a container having a spout provided with a normally closed valve member, of a piston mounted for sliding movement in the container and having a pin depending therefrom provided with a head, a latch member normally adapted to engage the said head and provided with an extended stud, having an exteriorly disposed knob adapted to be manually actuated for releasing the latch member from engagementwith the head whereby the said piston may be moved through the container,
and spring means included in the said valve to normally urge the latter back to closed position after being manually opened.
4. A lubricator comprising a container having a spring pressed pistonv adapted to be releasably held in the lower end of the container, and means to'releasably' hold the said piston in the lower end of the container and comprising a rotatable stud mounted in the bottom of the container and provided with a. pivoted latch normally spring pressed and adapted to swing into inoperative position by the pressure exerted by the spring when the stud is turned in one direction.
