Specification Letters Patent. Patented Feb, 19, 1918, I Application filed April 6, 1916. Serial No. 89,320. :To all whom it may concern: vided for locking the two leaves togeth'z' Be it known that LTnouas F. ILQTHAWAY, when the case is closed. a
The two leaves are hinged together by a in 7 which extends through the co6pe1atmg lugs 8 and '9 on the leaves 3 and 4 re spectively. A tongue 10 of the usual form may be provided for holding the cigarettes inposition against the leaf 3 which is well understood in the' art. This tongue is also hinged on the pin 7 by. means of the lug 11.
A false lea12 is proyided'for the secret c ompart1nent 4, said false leaf being of thin and State, oflllinois, have invented certain new and useful Imof which the specification.
invention has to do with The present 0 --''-the invention is to provide an article of this kind, havin in one of its walls a secret I'npartment o construction suitable to 'or more pictures such as the like. It is desired in to pro'vide a construction such the wally-"wherein said secret compartis formed, shall'look'to all intents and like an ordinary wall,-so that the resence'ofth'e secret compartment will notrevealed, once t upon careful examination furthermore desired in the parts that said omission this purpose the false leaf is conveniently provided with an upstanding peripheral flange 13 of a size to seat nicely within the flange the edge of the flange 13 registering when t 1e cigarette case is. opened with 'false leaf'12 lying'in position-within theleaf 4, the appearance of the article to the observer is substantially thatof an ordinary cigarette case. .Eaci leaf presents the appearance of having a depressed central portion, and the depressions of the two portions 'coiiperate to provide the space wherein the cigarettes :are supported. Furthermore, it is customary to offset the tongue substantially as shown at the point 14 in Fig. I, so
as to give an increased-clearance for the ac commodation of thecigarettesbet'yv-een the tongue and the leaf 3. By'de ressing the central portion of the false lea s 12, a space is provided for the reception of the tongue,
taking into account the fact that the tongue .this connectiont'o so'form amount of encroachment upon the -space' within thebody ofthe case, and also l jtilaiout' melting he case undesirably thick Stillanother 'ob ect' of the inventionis to "provide a verysirnglee form of construction an ignewhich cheaply manufactured minimflm number of parts and asmbledwith a ihlnimum amountof labor.
the invention from a detailed description of which consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinaft'er described and claimed.

The false leaf is conveniently ivoted on and ,4 and the tonguelO; For this'purposo lugs 14 through which the pin 7 passesi a.

The body portion formed I rovide each of the leaves with; an*-" int urn =peripheral. flange 5, so that when the jcaseflfls closed the flanges on the manneq in copietogether and form a solid or firm nonemwith each againstjth'e edge of said recess substantially with tliesurface of '1: e 5. By the useoi this construction, the
the'false leaf is provided with one on mor'e in the manner inaterial andof size andcontour to'seat down v snutgly within the peripheral flange 50f said lea 4. For
' throughout .themajor portion of its length.

in the flange 5 of the leaf- 4, and the undercut head portion 1'1 is adapted to'locli the like.
glinv'e shown a plate 19 havlng its edges and "bottom portioninturncd and secured to the back face of the false leaf, so as to leave a Slight clearance between the plate 19.and,thc fa se leaf. Into this clearance may be i=n serted one or more pictures which will be observable through the openings 20 of the plate. I prefer to flange the lower and side.
edges of the plate 19 but to leaveits upper edge nnflangcd, so that the openings through which the pictures areinserted or withdrawn are adjacent to the same edge to which the catch 15 is secured upon the false leaf. 'Ordinarilywhei'idhe secret compartment 'is to be opened, the catch 15 will he at thetop of the article and therefore by using the arrangement just described the openings for the insertion and'witl'idrawal of the pictures will als be brought to the top side of the compartment. k
While I have herein shown and described only a single embodiment of my invention, still it will be understood that I am in no wise limited "to said embodiment, except as I may limit myselfin the claii-ns.
I claim:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination, of a 1 .air of leaves, each leaf having its central portion depressed and heing provided with a peripheral intu'rncd flange. cooperating lugs on the leaves, a pin extended thronghsaid lugs and serving to hinge them togct a false leaf hinged on said pin said fa sc loaf having its central portion dcprcssed'aml being provided with apcriphcral flange of size and contour to sent within the flange ofonepf theQcaves, the flange of SilKl" leat alnnnp with the flange of the lcafinto which it seats when it.
is to be seated, a receptacle fora picture-or the like on the back false leaf. and means fol-locking the false leaf to the leaf into which itscats. for the purpose s ecified.-
, :2. In a device of the class described, the
combination, of a pair of leaves. coiiperab ing lugs on said leaves, a pin extemled through all of said lugs and serving to hinge the leaves together, the central portion of each leaf being depressed, a peripheral flange on each leaf, said. flanges seating squarely together when the leaves are foldcd together, a false leaf hinged on said pin, a peripheral flange on the false leaf adaptcd to seat into and register with the periplr cral flange of one of the first mentioned leaves, the central portion of the false leaf being depressed, means for locking the false leaf to the leaf into which it seats, and a tongue hinged on said pin, said tongue being of formation suitable to seat into the dcpressed portion of the false leaf, for the purpose specified.
3. In a device of the class described, the con'ihination, of a pair of lea es, a pin on which said leaves. are hinged, one of said leaves being of pairshapcd formation, a false leaf hinged on said pin, said false leaf being of pan-shaped formation and adapted to seat evenly into the first mentioned pan-shaped leaf, a receptacle for a photograph or the like on the back face of the false leaf, and means for lochinp the false leaf to the leaf into which it seals, for the purpose specified.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination of a pair of leaves, a pin on which said leaves are hinged, a false leaf hinged on said pin, said. false leaf being of contour approrn-iatc to seat evenly into one of the first mentioned leaves, a receptacle for a photograph or the like on, the bacl; face of said false leaf, and means for lock ing the false leaf to the deaf into which it seats, for the. purpose specified.
5. A. case having, in combination, a front cover. a back cover, an intcrnnaliate cover with its edges closely fitting into one of said other covers. and a pantie upon wf hlch said Three covers are pivoted. a
(i. A casing having, in combination, a front cover. aback cover, an intermediate cover with its edges closely fitting into one of said other covers. and with a space between the adjacent faccsof said two lastnalncd covers. and a pintle upon which said three covers are pivoted.
