To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN B. FELIcn'rTI, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Writing- Instrument Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to holders for writing instruments, and has for an object to provide a simple and eiiicient devlce for effectively securing pencils, fountain pens or the like to the garments of a user, whereby the writing instruments will be pre vented frombecoming accidentally lost. while being carried.

Another object resides in a device of the above character possessing features of construction which will allow the pencil or the like, to be conveniently secured to any suitable portion of the clothing, so that, if desired, the pencil may be hidden from an exterior viewpoint.

A further object resides in an economical device for the above purpose, capable of being removably but firmly secured upon the writing instrument, in order to prevent the same from becoming accidentally disengaged from the instrument.

A still further object resides in providing a pencil holder formed from a single piece of stamped metal and shaped to comprise a resilient instrument embracing a portion designed for securely associating the holder with the body of a pencil or fountain pen, said resilient portion terminating in a curvilineal prong operable to be engaged with the clothing, whereby the pencil or the like may be conveniently attached and secured to any desired point of said clothing; the prong being so formed that when in an applied position, the point thereof will be protected by the folds of the clothing to prevent the same from injuring the user.

Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.

The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction herein described and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claims.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, the preferred embodiment of the present invention comprises a holder 1 of improved construction and operable for use in connecting writing instruments, such as a pencil 2, to the clothing of those utilizing the writing instrument. In order to accomplish this result, in an effective manner and to expeditiously perform the same, the holder 1 is provided with novel features of construction. which will hereinafter appear as the description proceeds.

The holder 1 preferably consists of a single piece of stamped metal of substantiallv the configuration disclosed in Fig. 3 of the drawing. As shown, the blank is formed to produce a relatively enlarged instrument embracing portion 3, which is designed to be curved to conform to the general curvature of the pencil 2 or other writing instrument. The curved formation of the portion 3 will render the latter substantially resilient, so that when positioned upon the pencil 2 it will possess sufficient pressure to establish ample friction between the same and the pencil, to retain the holder in a relatively fixed position upon said pencil.

The portion 3 terminates on one side in a pronged or pointed extremity 4 of substantially less width than the portion 3 and in practice, the prong 4 is bent to conform to the general curvature of the pencil 2. until it completely encircles the body portion 3, as distinctly shown. in Fig. 2 of the drawing.

It will be noted that the outer extremity of the prong 4 is spaced from the adjacent part of the pencil embracing portion 3. so that a garm nt receiving opening 5 will be provided. The opening 5 is sub tantially wedge shaped and converges inwardly from the outer extremity of the prone; 4 to a point where the latter terminates in the portion 3,

said opening being utilized to retain the holder 1 in a fixed position when associated with a portion of a garment.

In securing the holder to the garment, the extremity of the prong 4 is initially inserted into said garment. The pencil and connected holder is rotated axially to approximately a complete revolution, that is, until the prong 4: again penetrates the garment, in order that it will be protected by the latter to prevent the point thereof from scratching or otherwise injuring the user. Upon initially rotating the holder, to secure the same to a garment, a portion of said clothing will be forced into the converging opening 5, and the continued rotation of the holder will culminate in binding that portion of the clothing within the opening 5 to the holder. Thus while the prong at will connect a garment with the holder, the wedge like opening 5 will retain the holder in a substantially secured position with respect to said garment, so that its accidental displacement will be effectively prevented. In removing the holder from the garment the above action will be reversed, as will be readily understood.

From the foregoing it will be seen that the objects of the present invention have been achieved, and that the advantageous features above mentioned are, among others, present. The holder is extremely simple and yet efiicient in design, and will effectively accomplish the above set forth functions. While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been described, it will be of course, understood that minor structural changes may be made from the above with out departing from the scope or principles of the invention. For instance, as shown in Fig. 4, the holder 1 may be formed from twisted wire and will possess the same features of operation as the preferred form.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and patentable is 1. A writing instrument holder, embodying a stamped metal structure of substantially spiral formation, the inner extremity of said structure being formed to provide a resilient instrument embracing portion, and the outer extremity of said structure terminating in a reduced clothing engaging prong formed to encircle said instrument embrao ing portion medially of its opposite longitudinal edges. A writing instrument holder embodying a substantially spiral structure having an inner instrument embracing portion open at the upper and lower ends thereof, and an outer clothing engaging prong, said prong being spaced from 'said instrument embracing portion and at a point medially of the open upper and lower ends thereof to provide an inwardly converging clothing receiving opening adapted upon the rotation of the holder to receive a portion of the garment therein to which the holder is connected.
