HOLDER. y
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 15, 1913.
Application led November 19, 1910. Serial No. 593,189.
To all 'whom t may concern:
`Be it known that I, RonERT YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fitchburg, Worcester county, Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements' in Holders, ofwhich the following is a specification.
This invent-ion relates to pen and pencil holders, or clamps for securing an article of this sort within the pocket or in any other desired position or location, and particularly to a holder of this sort constructed of wire.
Various holders or clips of this nature have been in use and my present invention relates to the improvement in construction and simplification in manufacture of such an article.
One ofthe difficulties in securing a proper grip upon the edge of the pocket has been the .fact that most holders have provided only a flat bearing surface which did not afford suiicient friction to securely hold the article. V
My invention, therefore, contemplates a construction in which the clip portion will have a bearing surface at such oints as to afford a more complete grip an hence, afford a greater protection against loss.
In the specification which follows and in the drawings which form a part of the same, I have described and shown a construction which I find well adapted to practical purposes.
Throughout specification and drawings like reference numerals are employed toindicate corresponding parts and in the draw- 1ngs:-
Figure l is a side view of `a pencil having my holder attached, Fig. 2 is a plan view of a holder removed, looking from the clip side, Fig. 3 is a view from the opposite side of the holder, and Fig. 4 is an end view of a pencil with my holder applied thereto.
My holder is constructed of a single piece of wire of ywhich the free ends are marked 1 and 2. Beginning at the free end 1, a'
loop 3 is formed which has a downwardly bent portion 4 and an upwardly bent tip 5.
At the opposite end of the loop 3 the wire is free end 1 and the opposite end of the loop 3.` This provides two grooved arms or loops 6, 7, 8 and v9, 10, 11 which are adapted to surround a pencil or pen barrel andv a spring loop 3 'which slightly straddles the pencil or pen barrel with its depressed portion 4, through which the barrel pro]`ects slightly, as shown in Fig. 1.
The sides of the bent portion 4 of the loop 3, therefore, bear radially upon the barrel at two opposite points, so that any piece Of fabric slipped under the loop 3 is drawn around the pencil P and ressed tightly against the saine. This `a ords a firm grip which can not be easily shaken loose. Q p
The upturned point 5 permits the ready insertion of the pocket edge, while the portion of the loop 3 above the depression 4 is adapted to receive lthethickened seam of the upperv edge of the pocket.
Various modifications in the construction of my device may obviously be made, all without departing from the s irit of my invention if. within the limit o' the appended claims. l
What I, therefore, claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A holder 'composed of a single piece of material forming a closed loop having barrel clamping arms and a closed connecting end, one of said arms being bent to lie horizontally at right angles to the main portion thereof and curved to provide an oppositely directed barrel loop curved around the barrel and bent downwardly to form a portion opposite and in the same horizontal plane with the first named horizontal portion, and terminating in a twist embracing the free end of the other of said clamping arms and locked upon the first named arm.
2. A holder comprising a barrel clamping loop closed at its lower end and having one of its arms bent tov provide a resilient barrel embracing portionl terminating in an end twisted about said arm, and over its opposite component arm and back to the first named arm where it is terminated.
. .In testimony whereof, I affix my signature Witnesses:
B. ELLMs, i, D. GOODWIN.
