said plate 2, is moved into proper registration thereover said pins 11, fit into corner recesses 12, provided in said plate 2, to assist further in holding the plates properly 5 registered and associated with one another. The hinge connection between the respective covers 1, and the angled back plates 2 and 3, is in each instance denoted as a whole by the reference numeral 13.
The cover members of the binder are con structed as usual, of superposed layers of binder board or other suitable material, as shown in detail in Figs. 6 and 8, and mounted in a recessed portion of each of said cover members near the top edge thereof is a pin receiving recessed block comprising sheet metal plates 14 and 15, respectively, riveted to one another and having inserted therebetween at the middle portion thereof a metal a block 16. A strong and rigid retaining means to receive one of the binder impaling posts 17, inserted in the aperture therein, is
' thus provided, with the metal wings on each side of said block extending for a relatively great distance into and between the layers of binder board to aiford a strong and substantial construction.
The leaves or pages used in the binder or ledger are denoted by the reference numeral 39 18, and for the purpose of retaining the same within the ledger when the covers thereof are locked together by the respective levers 6, and pins 11, the pages are apertured to receive the binding posts 17 which engage at their ends in suitable recesses provided therefor through the angled portions of the respective back plates 2 and 3.
The operation is as follows: The binder when closed and locked is sub as stantially similar in all respects to the usual type of loose leaf ledger, that is, the pages 18, are held between the covers of the binder by binding posts 17. When it is desired, however, to shift or change the pages or leaves within the binder, such as when posting the books, the binder may be conveniently taken apart by unlatching the small crank levers 6, to release the respective back plates 2 and 3, from one another,
56: to permit separation of the covers, and the detachedimpaling posts 17 may be inserted into the recessed retaining blocks 16, provided therefor to afford a stop or registering means for the pages when laid upon the sep arated cover tray members. Said leaves 18, of the binder are punched along one side margin thereof so that the leaves may be turned in the ledger in a manner similar to an ordinary book and as a consequence this 6 affords a great feature of convenience over other types of loose leaf binders wherein the leaves are punched along the top or bottom margin, thereby necessitating turning the entire ledger around when referring to the back surface of a sheet or leaf.
I am aware that various details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a binder of the class described, cover members, angled back plates liingedly connected to each thereof adapted to be 5 registered with one another, each of said back plates provided with a notch extending from the end of the plate inwardly and the notches adapted to register, and pivotally mounted mechanism on one of said. 5 plates adapted to engage said registering notches to hold said back plates and cover members locked one to another. 7
2. In a binder of the class described, cover members, angled back plates hingedly 35 connected to each thereof, each of said back plates provided with recesses adapted to register with one another when portions of said back plates are superposed one on the other, latching means mounted on one of go said back plates adapted to engage the reg istering recesses of said back plates to lock the same one to another, and resilient means associated with said latching means to retain the same in latched position.
3. A binder of the class described comprising cover members, angled back plates hingedly connected to each thereof, the back portion of one plate adapted to be disposed over the back portion of the other plate, each of said backplates provided with recesses adapted to be registered with one another, latching means mounted on one of said back plates to engage the registering recesses to lock the back plates one to another, and pins rigidly secured in the other of said back plates each adapted to engage a complemental recess therefor in the complemental back plates to assist in retaining said back plates locked to one another.
4C. In a binder of the class described back plates having portions adapted to be superposed one over the other, said superposed portions having notches extending from the end inwardly adapted to register, and a locking lever pivoted to one of said superposed portions at each end of the binder adapted to swing inwardly into said registered notches to lock the binder closed and to swing. outfrom the ends of the superposed portions out of the notches.
5. A tray binder comprising covers, back plates hinged thereto, said back plates provided with notches adapted to register, swinging levers adapted to engage in said notches to lock the plates together and friction members carried by said levers adapted to frictionally hold the levers inlocking position. v
6. A tray binder comprising covers, back 130 plates hinged thereto, said back plates provided with notches adapted to register, swinging levers adapted to engage in said notches to lock the plates together and friction members for holding said levers frictionally in locking engagement.
7. In a binder of the class described cover members, back members secured thereto, latching means secured to one back plate adapted to lock the back plates together, one of said back members provided with indents and resilient members secured to said latching means provided with detents to engage in said indents to hold the latching means in latching position.
8. In a device of the class described cover sections, back sections hinged thereto provided with notches at their ends, a locking lever adapted to engage in the notches to 20 secure the back sections together, one of said sections provided with corner notches and pins secured to the other section adapted to engage in said notches.
9. A loose leaf binder comprising cover sections, back sections connected therewith adapted to engage one within the other, provided with notches in adjacent ends adapted to register, latching means pivoted to the inner back section at each end thereof adapted to engage in the registering notches, inwardly directed pins in said outer back section and the inner section notched to engage said pins.
10. A loose leaf binder comprising covers, back members secured to the covers consisting of plates adapted one to fit over the other, said plates provided with registering notches at the ends adjacent one corner, a latching means pivoted to one plate at each end thereof to engage in said registering notches, one of said plates provided with notches in the end adjacent the opposite corner from the aforesaid notches and means secured to the other plate adapted to engage in the last named notches.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
