[LOOSE-LEAF BINDER,
Specification oi Letters Patent. I
Application filed November 11, 1912. Serial No. 730,699.
To all whom it may concern Be itknown that I, JAMES ,C. DAWSO a citizen of the United States, and resident; of \Vebster Groves, county of St. Louis, andState of Missouri, have invented cer- "tain new and useful Improvementsin Loose- Leaf Binders, of which the following is a specification, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming .a part thereof. 1
JThe invention relates to-loc-se leaf blnders I and more particularly to those of that type having filing posts of arch. form arranged along one edge of a suitable-base and rising therefrom. The object of the invention is to provide. a binder ofthe type described having improved meansfor supporting the filing'posts to permit the arches to be opened and closed. A detail of the invention provides improved means for positively holding the sheets in adjusted position in the binder when shiftable sheets are used therein.
, In theaccompanylng draW1ngs F1gure 1 is a perspective view showing-a binder em bodying the featuresgofimprovement provided by the invention, the parts of the,
binder mechanism being illustrated j in open-- "as covers for the sheets 12. Preferably the.
base plate 10v is rabbeted' along "one edge,
as, shown at-2'7, to receivethe basehne mber. 26 of the binder mechanism: --In thi'sjin stance, the base member'- 26 of the binder I mechanism takes the form of a j fi attened housing having closed-ends, and is'securedto the-base plate 10 withiir"the;rabbiet'.27
t' t ewt 14 1 A- plurality of pairs filing .p'osst s as 15-, 16- 'and 17,18, are provided for-receiving the sheets The posts of ea h" of these pairs are normallyeonnec'ted at their higher ends',"as by means'of areheslshown at' 3 1 andi iorm'e'd integral with one of the posts,.-as 16,
32.. Each of these'a'rches is most desirably 1-8", -of the corresponding pair. ii-A firm-connectionwith the other post, as 15,517, is provided by forming a stud, as 33, iii upon byfproviding. a socket, as 35, 36, in the higher end of the corresponding post 15, 17 for receiving such stud. The sheets 1-2 have slotted apertures, as 21"and 22, to enable them to run upon the binder post as also to be shiftedin position thereo-n i'n a direction parallel to" the plane' of the sheet. They are 'also provided with other apertures. as 23', 24, for'receiving additional pests de ti0n.- \Vhen sheets of this form are to be used'in thebinder, an additional pair of vided for ent'eringth'e apertlu'es 23,24 of and they are unconnectedf The posts 15,
block'39 is rigidly fixed within the cha 'nber of the base member 26 for receivingeachof the trunnions 3 ,38. The plate '29 is ao- 'cordingly adapted for avertical reciprocatingand a swinging movement, such as is required for raising and lowering the 16, 18 to. bring the studs 33, 3% into and oiit of engagement with'the sockets 36 and for-swinging these posts into and out. of
sheets engaged with--the'pcsts 16,,18. will also be engaged with the posts 20. it is desirable that all of these posts should be moved together, and it is for that reason that the post 20 is mounted in the plat 29. A'loCkin plate $0 is mounted within the holding the plate 29 against-movement when the posts which are=carried by the plate are losed position. As -shown-, the move ment' of the'l ock'in'g plate 40 is guided and -limitedlby means of a pair of'studs 4.3 each of which is-rigidly mounted within the Patented Nov. 4., 1913.

chamber of the tubular'base member 26 for no chamber 'ofthe tubular base member 26 and passes through a slotted aperture ll in the locking plate. The plate 29 and the'ilocking plate 40 are each provided with lateral extensions, those of the plate 29 being shown at 42, 44, and those onthe locking plate 40 being shown at 45, 46. These lateral extensions are. so arranged upon the two plates threaded plunger 47, having one of its ends, 'as 51, formed for the reception of a key (not shown), is employed. The other end of the plunger 47 has swiveled engagement with the plate 40. This swiveled engagement is constructed by forming a T head 49 upon the inner end of the plunger 47 and by providing a shaped socket 5 0 in the adjacent end of the plate 40 for receiving the T head of the plunger. The plunger 47 has screw-threaded engagement with a hearing block 48 rigidly mounted within the chamber of the tubular base member 26, and a keyhole 52 is formed in the end wall of the base member in line with the plunger.
In the use of the binder with sheets of the form shown, the filing arches comprising the two pairs of posts 15, 16 and 17, 18 will normally be locked in closed position by the engagement of the lateral extensions 45, 46 of the locking late 40 with the lateral extensions 42, 44 0t the plate 29. When it is desired to differentiate any one of the sheets 12 from other sheets, as when a newferent one of the apertures 23, 24 than the one with which it was formerly engaged. This post will accordingly. serve to positively hold the sheet in the adjusted position. \Vhen any number of sheets are transferred to the other side of the binder, they will be- 3 locking plate 40.
novaesa come threaded onto the post 20 in the same relative relation as when they were engaged with the post 19, and this post will then serve to positively hold them in adjusted position.
For the insertion or removal of sheets the arches will be opened as appears in Fig. 1 and also by dotted lines in Fig. 3. For this purpose a ke (not shown) is applied to the end of the p unger 47 through the key opening 52 and the plun er rotatedto shift the Tie plate 29 being now free to be movedupwardly as well as rocked upon the t- runnions 37, 38, the posts 16 are raised to lift the studs 33, 34 out of engagement with the sockets 35, 36, and arethen swung to an inclined position. For closing the hinder the posts 16, 18 are moved to cause the studs 33, 34 to be hooked into the sockets 35, 36, and the plunger 47 is reversely rotated by the key to move the locking plate 40 over the lateral extensions 42, 44 of the plate 29. lVhen the plate 29 is locked 111 this manner,
the arches are as rigid as if in one piece and there is but one joint in each arch over which the sheets must bepassed in transferring them from one side of the binder to the other.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a loose leaf binder, in combination a plurality of pairs of filing posts, one of the posts of each pair being fixed and the other post of each pair being movable toward and away from the fixed post, all of the movable posts being rigidly connected, and the posts of one pair being of such length as to meet when the; movable posts are in one position, the posts of another pair being separated at all times.
2. In aloose leaf binder, in combination, two pairs of relatively movable filing posts, the corresponding posts of the two pairs being rigidly connected, the posts of one pair being of'such length as to meet when in one position and the posts of the other pair being separated at all times.
