Be it known that 1, J Anas C. Dws'oN, a lltie of the United States, and resident of of St.- L'ouis, and State :'f Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shiftable-Sheet Bnderyf which the following is a specilina'tion, 'and which are illustrated '1n the accompanying drawings, forming a part .'threof.
'The invertida reines to loose leaf binders and more particularly to those known as shiftab'le sheet binders. In these' binders provision is made for retaining the sheets in different positions whereby a movement of certain ofthe sheets from one position to 'another' will serve' for readily distinguishing them from the' remaining sheets.
The invention contemplates an improved 'construction of loose leaf binder of the type described and the objecty of the invention is to provide a shiftable sheet binder fof Asimple and eilective construction.

In the' form of construction illustrated in Figs'l and 2, a pair of cover plates 1,0 and 11 are preferably provided. One of these cover plates, as 10, desirably servesF for" supporting a pair of openable filing arches, 12, 13, land two pairs f fil-ing pins, s 14, 15 and 16, 17. In carrying out the present inv'ef'tioh the arches 12, 13 are' both located between the Vtwo pairs of pins 14, 15 and 16,
17 and the two pins of each pair are located in alinement with the upright side members, as 18, 19 and 20, 21 of the arches. The pins 14, 115 and 16, 17 of ranged in a plane which is parallel with the planes of the arches 12, 13, and the height of the pins and of theupright side members are desirably substantially equal. `The cover, 11, is preferably provided with filing apertures 22, equal in number to the -number o pairs of ilin pins and arches; and 'runs upon these film members. The leaves of the binder are indicated at X. Each of the arches in -this each pair are also arthese leaves is provided with a pair of slotted filingapertures 23, 24. These apertures are desirably located adjacent the inner edge, as 25, of the sheet and extend in a direction which is parallel with such edge of the sheet. Each aperture 23, 24 is of such length as to receive one of the filing arches 12, 13 and one of the pins of the adjacent pair of filing pins 14, 15 or 16, 17 in one position of the sheet. As shown, the apertures, 23, 24 are so arranged that when one of the apertures, as 23, is in position to receive one of the arches, as 12, and one of the filing pins, as 14, of the adjacent pair of filing pins, the other aperture, as 24, extends from the remaining filing arch, as 13, away from the corresponding pin, as 16, of the adjacent pair of filing pins. The arrangement also provides that, in this position of the sheet, one of its margins, 26, is engaged with one of the pins, as 16 of the pair which is remote from the aperture, 23. This arrangement provides that when the sheet X is raised to the crown of the arches 12, 13, it may be shifted in position to bring the margin 26 beyond the plane of the corresponding filing pins 16, 17, and its opposite margin, as 27,-k within the plane of the filing pins ,14, 15. If the sheet be lowered upon position its aperture 24, will become engaged with one of the pins, as 16,- which was not previously engaged with an apertureI of the sheet, and the sheet will be efTectuall-y retained in the new position..
If desired, the filing pins, as 14, 150i one pair may be omitted. Such an arrangement is illustrated in Fig. 3, wherein the sheet X is shownas being filed upon a pair of filing arches 28,l 29.` In -this instance a single pair of filing pins, only one of which, as 30, is shown, serves for engaging the adjacent edge 26, of the sheet in one position, and for entering the slotted aperture 24 with the arch 29 in a dil'erent position of the sheet.
Any convenient mechanism may be employed for opening and closing the arches, as 12, 13 or 28, 29. In event the arrangement is such as to swing one of the upright side members, as 19, 21, of the arches away from the other side members, as 18, 20, the mechanism will preferably be so constructed as to so swing the filing pins, 15 and 17, and to retain them in alinement with the arch members 19 and 21. In the form of construction illustrated in Fig. 2, the members 18 and 2O of the arches 12, 13, and the filing pins 14 and 16 are rigidly mounted with the covex` plate l0. The members 19 and 21 of the arches 12 and 13 and the filing pins 15 and 17, on the other hand, are fixed upon a movable plate 31. The plate 31, is shown as being provided with trunnions 32,33 upon its opposite ends. vertically slotted bearing blocks 34, 35 are rigidly mounted with the cover plate 10 for receiving the trunnions 32 and 33, respectively. T-he overturned higher ends of the arch members 19 and 21 and the higher ends of the arch members 18 and 20 have complementary studs and sockets 36, 37. For retaining the parts of the arches in closed position, a key controlled locking means is desirably provided. As shown, this locking means includes a sliding plate 38 which is movable over lateral projections, as 39, 40, of the plate 31 when the parts of the arches are in closed position. A screw, 41, having one end in swiveled engagement with the plate 38, and its other end adapted for the reception of a key (not shown) serves for controlling the movement of the plate 38.
I claim as my invention,
1. In a loose leaf binder, in combination, a pair of filing prongs and a sheet having a slotted aperture, the spacing of the prongs and the length of the said aperture and its distance from a marginal edge of rthe sheet being such that the sheet is held in one position by the engagement of one of the prongs with the said aperture of the sheet and the engagement of the other prong with the said marginal edge of the sheet and in a' different position by the engagement of both of the prongsV with the said aperture of the sheet.
2. In a loose leaf binder, in combination, two pairs of coperating'but non-mating filing prongs arranged 1n parallel planes and a air of mating filino` prongs located in a p ane which is parallel with and between the planes of the first mentioned pairs of prongs.
3. In a loose leaf binder,
in combination, two pairs of coperating filing prongs arof the aperture being ranged in parallel-planes and a sheet having a slotted aperture, the distance between the two pairs'of prongs and the length of the said aperture and its distance from a. marginal edge of the sheet being such that the sheet is held in one position by the filin of the sheet on the prongs of one pair an the engagement of the said marginal edge of the sheet with one of the prongs of the other pair and in a diiferent position by the filing of the sheet on both pairs of prongs.
4. In a loose leaf binder, in combination, two pairs of coperating ling prongs arranged in parallel planes and a sheet having a slotted aperture, the distance between the two pairs of prongs and the length of the said aperture and its distance'from a marginal edge of the sheet being such that the sheet is held in one position by the'fling of the sheet on the prongs of one pair and the 'I engagement of the said marginal edge of the sheet with one of the prongs of the other pair and in a different position by the filing of the sheet on both pairs. of prongs, the prongs of the said pair on which the sheet is filed in both of its said positions being constructed to form a closed tiling arch.
5. In a loose leaf binder, in combination, a pair of tiling slotted aperture, the aperture of the sheet being of sufiicient length to re'ceive both of the said filing prongs at the same time and 'the distance between the filing prongs being equalto lthe distance from an end of the aperture to the adjacent marginal edge of the sheet which is beyond and transverse to the length of the aperture.
6. A shiftable sheet provided with a pair of slotted filing apertures,
of equal length, the distance from the outer end of each aperture of the sheet which is transverse to the length the aperture less twice its Width.
