Aug. i4,.1923. G. WHITLOCK LOOSE LEAF BOOK Filed March 26, 1920 ATTORNEY Patented Aug. 14, 1923..
RALPH e. wErrnock, OFLOS ANGELES, oamronnm, essrenon T0 11. n. wnrrnocn AND M. H. WHITLOCK, BOTH on LOS enemas, camronnra.
LOOSE-LEAF BOOK.
Be it known that I, RALPI-I'G. WrIrrLooK, a citizen of the United States, residingat the city of Los Angeles, county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Loose- Leaf Books, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention is an improvement upon the invention described in my application No. 349,056, filed January 2, 1920,v for loose leaf books and relates to improved means for causing the pages to register when closing the book and keeping the pages in register when the book is open or closed. A. further improvement consists in the half ring members which retain the pages in the boo The object of my invention is to provide an improved loose leaf book;
T 0 all whom it may concern:
In the drawings forming a part' of this application Fig. 1 is a plan view of an open bookembodying my invent-ion. Fig. 2 is a detached leaf. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1 ith the leaves omitted and portions of the cover broken away. Fig. 4: is an enlarged fragment of the leafholding .rings. Fig. 5 is a. detail showing the connecting of the ring holding frame plate and cover plate. 7
Referring to the drawings, the cover 5 has secured in the back thereof the-back plate 6 which has lugs 7 struck up therefrom which are pierced for the passage therethrough of rod 8, which rod also passes through lugs 9 of the ring frame holding plates 10 and thereby secures the ring frame to the cover. The ring frame consists of the side members 11 and 12, the ends of which are turned toward each other and connected by rivets 13. The ends of plates 10 are slotted and are bent downwardly and then inwardly and form pockets 14 in which the side members are mounted and in which they slide as the book is opened and closed. On the side members are mounted the curved half-ring leaf-holding members 15 and 16 which are arranged in pairs. Members 15 terminate in reduced ends called tongues and numbered 15 in Fig. 1. Members 16 have slots 16 in which the tongues 15 are received. These tongues and slots hold the half ring members against side movement and their length permits the half ring members on either side to hold all the'leaves in the book when open if it is desired to put them all on one side of the cover.
Intermediate the leaf holding rings are the guide rings composed of half ringinenw bers l7 and 18 which are secured to side members 11 and 12. At and within the leaf holding ring members and secured to plates 10 are the abutment bands 19 against which the inner edge of the leaf 2O bears when the book is opened or closed. Leaf 20 has holding holes 21 and guide notches 22 in its inner edge. When the leaf. is positioned in the book the holding ring members pass through holes 21 and the guide rings are received-in notches 22. By this construction the leaves are held against becoming askew when the book is opened and closed and strain is reduced at the holding holes; .1311 opening and closing lever-23 is rockably mounted on one of the side members and is pivotally connected to bar 24 which is rockably mounted on the opposite side member to rock the side members and open the half ring members as de scribed in my Patent No. 1,300,206.
Having described my invention I claim:
1. In a loose leaf book the combination of a ring frame composed of side members hinged together at the ends; curved leafholding half ring members arranged in pairs secured to said side members; curved guide half ring members arranged in pairs secured to said side members; ring frame holding plates with downwardly and inwardly turned slotted ends. said ends forming pockets in which the side members are received, the leaf holding rings being held in the slots; and leaves having holes near, and notches in the inner edges thereof, said notches registering with and ,receiving the guide rings and the holes receiving the holding rings. 7
2. In a loose leaf book a ring frame composed of side members hinged together at the ends, curved leaf-holding half ring members arranged in pairs secured to said side members, one member of each pair terminating in a tongue and the companion members terminating in a slot in which the tongue is received, and a ring frame holding plate having its ends slotted and turned downwardly and inwardly, said ends forming pockets in which the side members are received, the ring members being received in the slots.
3. In a loose leaf book a ring frame composed of side members hinged together at the ends; curved leaf-holding half ring members arranged in pairs secured to said side members; ring frame holding plates having their ends slotted and turned down wardly and inwardly, said ends forming pockets in which the side members are received, the ring members being received in the slots; and abutment bands secured to said ring plates.
4;. In a loose leaf book a ring frame composed of side members hinged together at their ends, curved leaf-holding half ring the side members are received, the'leaf holding rings being received in the s1ots;'abutment bands secured to said plates; in combination with leaves having holes near, and notches in the inner edges thereof, said notches registering With said guide rings, and said holes receiving said holding rings.
In Witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 18th dayof March, 1920. I V
V RALPH G.WVHITLOCK.
