Description
c. WJMACDONALD. LOOSE LEAF BINDER.
APPLICATION FILED IAN.12 I92I 1,408,817. mmm Mr. 7,1922.
UNITED STATES PATENT @Fi-fics CHARLES w. MACDONALD, or NEW vorm,- iv. jv.`
To all wkomet'mag/ cor/cem:
Be it known that l, CHARLES WV. MAC-- iioNALma citizen of the jUnited States of America, residing at New York city, county and State of New` York, have invented certain new and useful'lmprovements in Loose- LeafABinders, of which the following'is a full, clear,- and eXact description;
This invention relates to improvements in loose leaf binding devices, onefof the objects being to provide simple yandinexpensive means to secure `aI plurality of` loose leaves together, in bookr foiin,"between covers ifvdesirablefa further object ofl myinvention being to provide a binding 4means arranged to engage folded pages, or in other words, paged printed matter as it` comes from, the press. Printing 'presses usually turn out the pagesof a book in couples or groups, which are foldedfby the press after vhaving been printed. Insteady o-fperforating these pages, as is usual when they are intended for loose leaf assembly, 'I provide means in the form of a bar to engage the leaves at the point where they are folded, the engaging means being slipped into place and not in anyway fastened to the leaves. ln combination with the leaf-engaging members, I provide a Vdevice to receive the engaging members, after they have been inserted between the leaves formed by folded sheets of printedimattei. As many folded sheets can be carried by one bar as may be desired. A book will be made up of a plurality of groups of leaves, each group having associated therewith a supporting bar, all of said bars being retained by a support which is common to all.
I will now proceed to describe in detail the manner of carrying Lout my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, wherein Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a `book made up in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a perspective detail view, illustratiiig a. number of nested sheets and a retaining or locking bar associated therewith;
Fig. 3 is a perspective viewof the support ing member for the bars and the thereby carried sheets;
Fig. 4 is a. fragmentary sectional plan` view of an assembled book, the section being taken on a line 1 -4 in Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view, broken Loose-LEAF BINDER. v

'lo cooperate with the supporting inember 9, I provide locking bars 19 arranged to be Vslijliped between two sheets 20 and 21 l and to "rest within the fold thereof. As many similar sheets may be superimposed upon sheets 2O and 21 as may be desired, asf
indicated yin Fig. 2. The nested sheets will beheld between the covers 22 and 23 of a book b-y means of the locking bars 19, as is evident.
It will be seenthat `thelength of the` bars 19 is somewhat greater than the width of the sheets, thereby providing projecting ends which are designed to enter the channels 11 and 12 whereby the bars rand the sheets carried thereby will be held in place against movement longitudinally of the book. To prevent the leaves and the lbars 19 from being prematurely lifted out of the channels, I cover the channel 12 with the cover 15 fortlie channel11,which, after all of the bars have been inserted in the channel,
is'moved over to cover the adjacent projecting ends of the bars 19, as can be seen in Fig. 5. To insert the bars, they will be slightly tilted, as indicated by dotted linesin Fig. 3, and one end thereof placed into ehannelQ12',` after gwhich'said bere will kloe lowered to e horizontal position to oaneethem opposite end toenter channel 11.
In combination Wiih vbare A19 endsupport 9, I employ a support for a fly-leaf nieinber, said support being of angular 'formetion and indicated by 26 in Figs. 6 `and 7. To apply. ,tliefllyileeftothe bookessembly, the engin '1er Supporting ber will `be enpleehbywef;
