TEMPORARY BINDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 723,963, dated March 31 1903.

To all whom, it may concern:

Beit known that I, HOWARD H. WILLSON, a citizen of the United States, residin'gat' Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Temporary Binders, (Case No. 2,) of which the following isa full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification. 7

My invention relates to temporary binders, and has for its object the provision of improved construction of such devices whereby the sheets or inserts may readily be placed within or removed from the binder either separately or in a body, to which end I providea file capable of holding the sheets or inserts together without the aid of the cover and associate with this device a fastener mounted within the cover and capable of removably securing the file, with its contents, in place. The file and its fastening device are so relatively constructed that the file need only be partially removed from its fastening mechanism to permit the removal or insertion of sheets or may be completely removed for. the purpose of substituting an entirely new file or a new set of sheets.

The file is preferably in the form of a rod curled into partially-completed or open rings at its ends, these rings being disposed in planes at right angles or transverse to that in.. which the rod lies, the rings preferably lying in parallel planes. The free ends of the rings preferably lie on the same side of the rod. The sheets of paper or inserts are provided with eyelets or perforations, spaced apart a distance equal to the distance between the rings, and it is through these perforations that the free ends of the rings are passed to secure the paper in place. A fastening device is provided upon the cover of the binder which engages the file to removably secure the same in place. This fastening device preferably not only performs the function of detachably securing the file in place, but also fastens the sheets in place'upon the file to prevent their withdrawal.

'7 tion, so that the intermediate or shank portion of the file may be disposed between the intermediate portion of the plate and the cover-back.

To facilitate the removal and insertion of the file, the plateisprovided with similarlydisposed bayonet-slots between its anchored ends. When the file is in place, the rings of the file are bottomed in the slots, the free ends or noses of the rings being inserted beneath the plate to lock the sheets in place. When paper is to be placed upon or removed from the file, the file is moved longitudinally of the plate until the free ends of the rings register with the outlets of the slots, whereupon the file may be slightly rotated or entirely removed, as desired. event dislodgment of the file and yet permit its ready removal, I provide spring-detent mechanism which maintains the file-rings at the bottom of the bayonet-slots. My invention enables me to locate the entire file, with its contents, within the cover.

The intermediate portion of the fastening-plate is preferably entirely free from the cover and is designed to receive the intermediate portion of the file d, thatis made, preferably, of wire, the file being preferably shaped into partial rings e e at its ends, which pass through the eyeholes in the paper.- To more effectively secure the file in place, the plate 0 is provided with bayonet-slots f f, having their inner ends or bottoms and their outlets similarly placed. The stretch of the wire file between the rings is substantially equal to the dis ance between the slot-outlets and also the slot-bottoms, so

that when the tile is moved to have its rings in line with the slot-outlets it may readily be removed or turned, and when the rings are moved to the bottoms the file is rigidly held in place. Before the file-rings are moved to the bottoms of the bayonet'slots the free ends e thereof are tucked beneath the plate and the back I), so that the papers in place upon the tile may be thoroughly secured in place.

In Fig. 1 the file (Z and its terminals 6 are shown in the position they occupy when about to be placed in position, in which position the free ends of the portions 6 are above the plate 0.

In order to preventthe file from readily becoming dislodged, I provide spring-clips g as the preferred form of retaining mechanism, the springs being constructed somewhat similar to the springs'of spring-jacks employed in telephone-exchange practice. The springs are anchored below the bayonet-slots and are kinked at their free ends, the rings or the curled or curved or bent portions of the file being accommodated and held between the bottoms of the bayonet-slots and the kinked ends of the detaining-springs.

It is obvious that changes may readily be made in the form of device shown without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I do not, therefore, wish to be limited to the precise structure shown; but,

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a temporary hinder, the combination with a cover, of a file provided with an intermediate portion and curled or bent end portions, means for affording a slidable connection between the file and the cover and looking means for engaging the ends of the said curled or bent end file portions, toward or from which latter means the said ends may be moved, substantially as described.

2. In a temporary hinder, the combination with a cover, of a file provided with an intermediate portion and curled or bent end portions, means for affording a slidable and detachable connection between the file and the cover and locking means for engaging the ends of the said curled or bent end file portions toward or from which latter means the said ends may be moved, substantially as described.

3. In a temporary binder, the combination with a cover, of a plate provided with slots and secured thereto and a file provided with curled or bent end portions and an intermediate portion, the slots in the plate permitting the location of the intermediate portion between the plate and cover, while allowing the curved ends to hold the binder contents, substantially as described.

4. In a temporary binder, the combination with a cover, of a plate provided with slots and secured thereto and a file provided with curled or bent end portions and an intermediate portion, the slots in the plate permitting the location of the intermediate portion between the plate and cover, while allowing the curved ends to hold the binder contents, and spring-clip mechanism for removably securing the filein place,substantially as described.

5. In a temporary hinder, the combination with a cover, of a plate provided with bayonet-slots and secured thereto and a file provided with curled or bent end portions and an intermediate portion, the slots in the plate permitting the location of the intermediate portion between the plate and cover, while allowing the curled ends to hold the binder con tents, the said file being longitudinally movable to bring the curled or bent portions into or out of line with the slot-outlets, substantially as described.

6. In a temporary binder, the combination with a cover, of a plate provided with bayonet-slots and secured thereto and a file provided with curled or bent end portions and an intermediate portion, the slots in the plate permitting the location of the intermediate portion between the plate and the cover, while allowing the curled ends to hold the binder contents, and spring-clip mechanism for removably securing the file in place, the said file being longitudinally movable to bringthe curled or bent portions into or out of line with the slot-outlets, substantially as described.

7. In a temporary hinder, the combination with a cover, of a plate provided with bayonet-slots and secured thereto and a file provided with curled or bent end portions and an intermediate portion, the slots in the plate permitting the location of the intermediate portion between the plate and cover, while allowing the curved ends to hold the binder contents, the said file being longitudinally movable to bring the curled or bent portions into or out of line with the slot-outlets, the

curled or bent file portions being adapted for insertion between the plate and cover when moved away from the slot-outlets, substantially as described.

8. In a temporary binder, the combination with a cover, of a plate provided with bayonet-slots and secured thereto and a file provided with curled 0r bent end portions and an intermediate portion, the slots in the plate permitting the location of the intermediate portion between the plate and cover, while allowing the curved ends to hold the binder contents, and spring-clip mechanism for re movably securing the file in place, the said file being longitudinally movable to bring the curled or bent portions into or out of line with the slot-outlets, the curled or bent file por tions being adapted for insertion between the plate and cover when moved away from the slot-outlets, substantially as described.

9. In a temporary binder, the combination with a cover, of a file provided with curled or bent end portions and a fastening-plate se cured to the cover, with respect towhich the I provided with slots with-which the bent porfile is longitudinally movable, the plate being provided with slots with which the bent end portions may be caused to register, and from which said portions may be moved, substantially as described.

10. In a temporary binder, the combination with a cover, of a file provided with curled or bent end portions, and a fastening-plate secured to the cover, with respect to which the file is longitudinally movable, the plate being tions may be caused to register, the ends of the bent portions being also adapted for insertion or-tucking beneath the plate, substantially as described.
