CHARLES F. MGBEE, OF ATHENS, OHIO; ASSIGNOR TO 'JJIFIIE MCBEE BINDER OF ATHENS, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
COMPANY,
LOCKING DEVICE FOR LOOSE-LEAF FILES OR BINDERS.
Application filed August 4, 1920. Serial No. 401,171.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. MoBEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Athens, county of Athens, and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and use ful improvement in Looking Devices for Loose-Leaf Files or Binders. of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of looseleaf binders which are designed to bind anumber of leaves and which will permit the insertion of additional leaves or the removal of leaves from the binder without destroying or disarranging the other leaves.
My invention has for its object to provide a filing and locking device in which the leaves may be inserted even though the perforations are not in alignment with the rods on which they are mounted, and to accomplish this result, I employ upwardly extendinn flexible rods which can be bent to fit the perforations of the loose leaves. and which when locked, forms a very rigid and secure binder.
My means of accomplishing the foregoing objects may he more readily understood by having reference to the accompanying drawings which are hereunto annexed and made a part of this specification. in which- F 1 illustrates a loose-leaf file or binder equipped with my new invention.
7 F 2 is a top or plan view showing the locking device.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of my new improvement.
Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the entire description.
As shown in the drawings, I provide'two covers which may be of any size, the lower cover 10 of which has fixedly secured thereto and adjacent its ends. two upwardly projecting' flexible rods 11 and 12 which can be bent to fit the loose leaves 13.
it is apparent that any number of flexible rods may be employed that I do not desire to limit myself to the employment of two rods. I provide a metal strip I-shaped in cross-section 16 which is perforated, said perforations 18 and 19 being adapted to re ceive the flexible rods 11 and 12 which can be bent again to fit the perforations in the metal strip 16, if they are not in register therewith.
The upper cover 26 is provid with i 21 and 22 and outwardly extending flanges I at each end 23 and 24.
The operation of my device is as follows:
W'hen the operator is ready to bind his papers, he bends the flexible rods 11 and 12 until they fit the perforations in the loose leaves 13 which are slid over the rods. The rods are then bent so as to register with. the perforations in the strip 16 which is. then slid over these rods until it'rests against the leaves 12'). now ready to be bound. The metal strip 20 slides over the metal strip 16 as clearly shown in the drawings. the longitudinally inturned flanges 21 and 22 guiding the metal strip 16 and holding it in position. The metal strip on the upper cover is preferably made of flexible material so that the outwardly extending flanges 23 and 24 can be bent down so as to securely lock the same.
The book, magazine or file is i The flexible rods 11 and 12 are bentand are folded so as to lay flat over the I-bar. It will be apparent from the foregoing that this enables the file to be securely locked and can not be unbound until the operator pulls the upper cover oif. lVhile I' have shown and described specific means employed to utilize my invention, I do not desire to limit myself to the exact construction, it being apparent that other means may be employed'to use my 7 invention. 7
Having described my invention what I regard as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A loose-leaf binder com )TiSlIl the combigitudinal inturnedfiange's and outwardly ex tending flanges at each end, said strip being; adapted to slide over the sides of the I-b'ar and rods.
foregoing specification.
ceaseless. Mensa.
In testimonv whereof, I have signed the
