Description
V.N. TAYLOR.
Improvement in Shirt Collars.
Patented March 26, 1872.
FIG, 2
AM. PHOTU-UTHCCEAFHIC CD A! X /0550/i'il[3 PROCESS UNITED IMPROVEMENT m ISHIRT-CQLLARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,920, dated March 26, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,-VARNUM N. TAYLOR, of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shirt-Collars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description'thereof, reference which elongated portion is turned'under twice, so that when the collar is adjusted upon the neck of the wearer the turned down portion holds the elongated folded part in place, and
the collar is very much stiffened and strengthened thereby, and whereby the face of the lappet or turn-down part is raised to imitate a tape-edge by the pressure of the folded elongated end against said turned down part.
That others skilled in the art may be able to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same. 2
In the drawing, Fig. 1 represents so much of a plan view of a collar as is necessary to illustrate my invention, in which Ais the lapiiet or turn-down part, which is made considerably elongated at the end, and may be of a tapered form, so as to fold under more readily. The part D is folded at the line a, and
the part c is again folded at the line d, so that V when the lappet A is folded down at the line I) there is a double fold of the end of the lappet beneath, and is kept in place by the lappet'itself.
To make an imitation of a tape-edge it is only necessary to press the folded elongated end firmly against the turn-down part, by rolling or otherwise, causifig said folded part to make its imprint in the back of the lappet or turn-down portion.
When the collar is adjusted to the neck this arrangement of a double fold makes the collar very much stiffer and stronger, and the collar will not readily become broken or bent by ordinary wear.
It is evident that the end of the lappet may be folded in more than two places, so as to make more than two thicknesses of the part folded over; but for ordinary purposes, and for common thicknesses of material, two folds might be quite sufficient.
I am aware that a single fold has been made upon the lappet of a collar, and I do not, therefore, claim a collar having such single fold for the purpose of improving the appearance of the collar but Having described my invention, what I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, a shirtcollar having two or more folds, at a cl, upon the end of the lappet or turn-down part, for the purpose and substantially as described.
VARNUM N. TAYLOR.
