AZ'ZYL CHARLES WESLEY HARPER, 0F GOODWOOD, ONTARIO, CANADA.
ANTIKICKING DEVICE FOR COWS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 41, i'lJiY.
Application filed March 12, 1917. Serial No. 154,286.
This invention relates to devices for preventing cows from kicking while being milked, and my object is to produce a device which will operate not by restraining the kicking movement but by preventing the cow from initiating such a movement.
I attain my object by providing a chain, having a lining of leather or other suitable comparatively soft material, with a toggle lever clasp by means of which its ends may be drawn together to clasp it tightly about the cows leg just above the hock joint to draw in the tendon just above the hock, thus preventing the cow from either kickmg with the said leg or from supporting its weight on it and kicking with the other.
The links of the chain and the toggle mechanism are so arranged that the toggle mechanism may be engaged in any one of several positions to provide for adjustment to suit variations in the size of the legs of the animals with which it is used.
The whole is constructed in detail substantially as hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a perspective view showing my device applied to the cow;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of the same; and
Fig. 3 a front elevation on the same scale.
In the drawings like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.
The fundamental part of my invention is a flexible band which may be opened up to place it about the cows leg, which band is provided adjacent its ends with link like members adapted for engagement with a toggle device by means of which it may be clasped about the cows leg above the hook.
In practice I prefer to use a chain 2 inside which is secured a lining of leather 1, or of other suitable relatively soft and sufficiently tough material. The chain practically surrounds the leather band though it is evident that if the leather band were made suliiciently strong and tough it would be suiiicient to use only a few links of the chain adjacent the ends of the leather. the leather itself being depended upon to stand the strain intermediate its ends.
To one end link of the chain 2 I pivot the lever 3. A special link 5 adapted to embrace the lever as shown is preferably provided. One end of the lever is provided with the jaws 4 adapted to engage any one of the links at the other end of the chain 2. When the lever is so engaged it may be drawn to the position shown in the drawings, thus tightening the chain and the leather band beneath it.
Owing to the width of the link 5, the link with which the jaws of the lever are engaged may be drawn up through it as shown so that the point on which the chain link pivots in the jaws 4 is outside a line joining the centers on which the link 5 pivots. The strain on the hand then tends to hold the toggle in the position shown without other fastening devices being required.
It is evident that if the device to a small cow that the lever may be engaged with the second link instead of the first so as to insure that the band will be properly tightened up to press on the large tendon above the hook.
l/Vhen this device is applied, owing to the drawing in of the tendon, the animal can not rest its weight fully on the leg to which the device is applied, and therefore can not kick with the other leg, while the strain on the tendon is suilicient to prevent kicking with the leg to which the device is applied.
The device, it will be seen, is very simple, strong, easily and quickly applied and will be found on use to be very effective.
WVhat I claim as my invention is:
1. An anti-kicking device for cows combe applied prising a soft flexible band having metal links connected therewith; a toggle lever to which a link at one end is pivotally connected intermediate of the ends of the lever, said lever being provided with jaws engageable with a link at the other end of the band to draw the ends together by a rockmg movement of the lever, and the whole being designed to embrace a cows leg just above the hock.
to Which a link at one end is pivotally conat the other end of the band to draw the ends together by a rocking movement of the lever, and the Whole being designed to L) embrace a cows leg above the hock.
Dated at Uxbridge this ninth day of February, A. D. 1917.
CHARLES VESLEY HARPER.
2. An anti-kicking device for cows com prising a soft flexible band having metal links connected therewith; a toggle lever nected intermediate of the ends of the lever, said lever being provided With jaws engageable with any one of a plurality of links Qopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
