J OSEPH L. LIKINS, OF VALLEJO, CALIFORNIA.
IMROVEMENT IN SPlCE-BOTTLES.
Specification forming part of Letters PatentNo.124,836, dated March 19, 1872; antedated March 14, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosEPH L. LIKINS, of Vallejo, in the county of Solan'o, and in 'the State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spice-Bottles; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention consists in providing the bottles in which ground spices are put up and sold with a perforated cap; and it also consists in the nanner of fastcning such perforated cap to the bottle.
i In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed. to describe its Construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of my Spice-bottle as ready for sale. Fig. 2.is a similar view of the same as ready for use; and Fig. 3 isa perspective View of the perforated cap.
A represents a bottle of any suitable size This bottle is made without the usual bead or flange around the mouth, butis provided with two lugs, a a, on opposite sides i of the neck a short distance below the mouth. B represents the cork or stopper for the bottle;
and O represents a perforated metallic cap,
nade to fit over the mouth and a portion of the neck of the bottle. On opposite sides in the lower edges of this cap are L-shaped slots b, so that the cap can be putdown below the lugs co a and then by turning be held firnly in` place. This mode of attaching the cap 0 may be used on oaster-bottles, as well as other places where a perforated cap is necessary.
The bottles being sold with the cap on, the cork can readily be withdrawn by first removin g the cap, and the oap then put on again for use and left in this condition 5 or, for spices that would deteriorate by exposure to the air and that are not often used, the cork can readily be inserted again. a
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination, with a spice or caster-bottle .provided With eXt-erior lugs a a 011 its neok, I claim the metallic cap G, perforated at its top, and provided on its sides with L.-shaped slots I b, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set ny hand this 24th day of August, 1871.
