Description

(No Model.)
K. HUTTER. BOTTLE STOPPER No. 580,456. Patented Apia 13, 1897" ZZZ IIIVENTOR @2227 87 312)! W WITNESSES:
A TTOINIEYS NI'IED STATES PATENT Orricn.
KARL HUTTER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BOTTLE-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 580,456, dated April 13, 1897. Application filed January 13,1896. Serial No. 575,229. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, KARL HUTTER, a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Stoppers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to bottle-stoppers, and has for its object to produce a plug bottlestopper which will securely seal the bottle.
The bottle-stopper forming my present invention is an improvement on the bottle-stopper patented to me February 7 ,1893,by United States Letters Patent numbered 491,113.
My invention consists in the construction hereinafter set forth and claimed.
The drawings show a bottle-stopper e1nbodying my invention, Figure 1 showing the bottle-stopper in section, Fig. 2 showing the bottle-stopper detached from its bail and in perspective, Fig. 3 showing the bottle-stopper in section, and Figs. 4 and 5 being plan views of the rings or collars.
In the drawings, a represents the neck of the bottle, provided with a neck-wire b, to which is pivotally connected a lever c, and to this lever is pivoted a bail-wire d, whose ends enter the eye 6 of the lever c. A tapered plug f is provided with an aperture g, through which the bail-wire 01 passes. Adjoining the taper on the plug is an annular groove or recess h, toward which the sides of the plug taper, the plug terminating in a head or button d. This plug is combined with an elastic member, which is shown as a stepped collar comprised by an elastic ring or section Z, which hugs the tapered portion of the stopper, and an elastic ring or section 70, having a smaller aperture than that of the ring Z, seated in the recess h and extending beyond the lower edge of the ring Z, the two rings thus constituting a stepped collar, which may, however, be formed in one piece, if desired.
It will be observed that the elastic ring 76 extends in a direction transverse to the axis of the stopper beyond the ring I and will be crowded into the groove h in the plug when the stopper is forced into a bottle, as shown in Fig. 2, and at the same time the ringlwill be stretched along the tapered portion of the plug, as also clearly shown in the said figure, so that an effective interior seal will be formed by the rings k and Zbetween the bottle-mouth and the plug.
By referring to Fig. 2 it will be observed that the ring Z does not extend as far up the tapered portion of the stopper as in Fig. 1, where it is represented as in use.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A bottle-stopper comprising a plug f having a tapered section 2' and a groove h, a ringZ surrounding the tapered portion of the stopper and of a less height and closely hugging the said tapered portion, an annular elastic ring 7:; seated in the circumferential groove in the plug below and extending beyond the ring Z the said ring Z abutting against the ring 7.", so that when the stopper is entering into a bottle the ring 70 will be compressed and the ring Z will be stretched along the tapered portion 41 of the stopper, thereby providing an efficient interior seal.
