MAX LEONARD, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CONVERTIBLE GARMENT.
Application filed July 26, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, MAX LEONARD, a cit1- zen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Garments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of an improved convertible garment and is particularly adapted for ladies use.
One object of my invention is to pro vide a garment which when arranged in a certain manner will have the effect ofan ordinary skirt but includes bifurcated leg portions such for example as the legs of trousers or overalls.
Another object is to so construct my improved garment that part of the means which produces the skirt eflect can be entirely removed to expose the leg portions and another part can be turned into positions to provide bibs or aprons at the front and rear of the garment, said bibs or aprons being provided with shoulder straps to retain them in'proper position.
A. further object of my invention is to so construct and arrange said part which is entirely removable that a kimono sleeve effect can be attained by the adaptation of said part to and adjacent the bibs or aprons.
A still further object is to so make my improved garment that it will be serviceable for use by a lady while working in a garden where freedom of movement of the limbs is necessary, since the bottom portions of the legs can be gathered or shirred around the ankles of the wearer.
Another object of my invention is to make the same of a durable construction and so that it can be manufactured and sold at a reasonably low cost.
These objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved garment when the parts are ar ranged to produce a skirt effect.
Fig. 2 is a rear view of Fig. 1.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 2?, 191?.
Serial no. 182,853.
Fig. 3 is a front View showing certain of the parts moved into a position to form front and rear aprons connected by shoulder straps.
Fig. 4 is a rear view of Fig. 3.
Figs. 5 and 6 are front and rear elevations of my improved garment showing front and rear panels removed from the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4 and secured to the front and rear aprons and to the garment adjacent the waist line, the bifurcated leg portions being gathered or shirred at their bottoms.
Fig. 7 is a section on the line 7-7 of Fig. 1.
FFig. 8 is a section on the line 88 of I Fig. 9 is an enlarged section taken on the line 99 of Fig. 5.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents my improved garment having bifurcated leg portions 2 and 3 and a waist band 4 made in front and rear sections 5 and 6 which are designed to be buttoned together as clearly shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive.
Openings 7 are provided at the sides of the garment and the portions adjacent these openings are provided with buttons 8 so that the openings may be closed after the garment has been put on. The front and rear of the garment is provided with buttons 10 and ll'respectively. A front panel 12 has button holes 13 which register with the buttons 10 so that the panel 12 can be detachably secured to the front of the gar ment to hide the parting between the leg portions thereof. In a similar manner, a rear panel 14 has button holes 15 which register with the buttons 11 so that the panel 14 can be detachably connected to the rear of the garment and thereby cover the parting between the leg portions of the garment at the rear thereof.
The panels 12 and 14 are preferably tapered as clearly illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 so that the side edges are'consistent with the usual tapered lines of a skirt. Furthermore, the upper edges 16 and 17 of the panels 12 and 14 respectively, are curved or otherwise artistically shaped so that when the garment is used in the form shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the cut or shape of the panels will present a pleasing appearance.
Front and rear aprons 18 and 19 respectively are secured to the respective sections 5 and 6 of the waist band. The front apron 18 has button holes 20, certain of which are 7 designed to receive buttons 21 on the front ends of the shoulder straps 22, the rear ends of said shoulder straps being provided with buckles 23 and secured to the uppermost portion of the rear apron 19.
The button holes 20are so proportioned and arranged that when the front apron is folded downwardly into the position shown in Fig. 1, they are adapted to register with the uppermost of the buttons 10 so that the buttons 10 which serve to secure the front panel to the body portion of the garment, also serve to secure the front apron to the garment in a position overlapping the upper part of the front panel 12, this position being clearly shown in Fig. 1. V
The rear apron 19 is provided with button'holes 24 which are designed to register with certain of the buttons 11 so that the rear apron can be folded downwardly and securedto the garment in a positlon overlapping the rear panel 14.
The garment arranged as illustrated in Figs. land 2, presents the appearance of an ordinary plaited skirt or one having a panel gore inserted therein.
The arrangement as shown in Figs. 3 and a presents the effect of an ordinary skirt with aprons at the front and rear supported by shoulder straps.
Figs. 5 and 6 show my improved garment as the same can be used with the trouser or or? tape 29 are inserted through said hem and provided with buckles 30. By having the draw-strings 29, it is possible to gather or shirr the bottoms of the legs 2 and 3 to reducethem in diameter so as to closely fit the ankle or lower portion of the legs of the wearer.
Figs. 5, 6, and9, show thebottoms of the legs in their shirred condition, while Figs. 1 to 1 inclusive show the leg portions stretched: out to their normal width at the bottom, in which case the-draw-strings lie within the folds. of the hem and. are not exposed to View.
While I have described my invention as "taking a particular-form, it will be understood that the various parts of my invention tions, a panel, securing means whereby the panel is dct-achably connected to the garment and adapted to cover the parting between the leg portions, and an apron secured above said leg portions and adapted to be turned upwardly away from said panel or downwardly from said'secured position to a position adjacent said panel, and common securing means for said panel and apron, substantially as described.
2. A convertible garment having leg portions, panels, securing means whereby the panels are detachably connected to thefront and rear of the garment and adapted to cover the parting between the leg portions and thereby produce a skirt, frontand rear aprons projecting from the waist portion and adapted to be turned down the front and rear of the garment, and means for securing the aprons, when turned down, to the skirt, substantially as described 3. A convertible garment having leg portions, panels, securing means whereby the panels are detachably connected to the front and rear of the garment and adapted to cover the parting between the leg portions and thereby produce a skirt, front and rear aprons projecting from the waist portion and adapted to be turned down the front and rear of the garment, means for securing the aprons together to form a should er support therefor and means for securing the aprons, when turned down, to the skirt, substantially as described.
1. A convertible garment having leg portions, panels, securing means whereby the panels are detachably connected to the front 7 and rear of the garment and adapted to cover the parting between the legportions, front andrear aprons projecting from the waist portion and adapted to, be turned down thefront and rear of the garment, and means for securing the aprons together to form a shoulder support therefor, said aprons having portions adapted to be attached to said securing means, substantially as described. 1
5. A convertible garment having leg portions, panels, and securing means whereby the panels are detachably connected to the front and rear of the garment andadapted to cover'the parting between the leg por tions, front and rear aprons projecting from the waist portion and adapted to be turned down the front and rear of the garment, and name to this specification in the presence additional securing means whereby said of two subscribing Witnesses. panels can be attached to form sleeves adjacent the outer edge portions of the aprons and the Waist of the garment, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my MAX LEONARD. WVitnesses MARY A. INGLAR,
CHAS. E. Po'rrs.
