GARMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 6, 1917.
Application filed. February 12, 1916. Serial No. 77,882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARJORIE APPEL Hours, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Garment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved garment more especially designed for use on babies and arranged to permit convenient enlargement of the top, front and back of the shoulder portions of the garment to readily compensate for the growing of the infant.
In order to accomplish the desired result, use is made of folds extending transversely across the top of the shoulder portions of the garment and merging with the body of the garment at the front and back, the folds being preferably held in closed position by temporary fastening means such as stitches to allow opening of any one of the folds on each shoulder at a time as the infant grows.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indi cate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a front perspective view of the garment;
Fig. 2 is a rear perspective view of the same;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of the top of one of the shoulder portions of the garment; and
Fig. 4 is a similar view of the same with one of the folds on one shoulder portion let out to enlarge the garment.
The garment is mainly intended for use on babies and may be an undergarment or an outer garment. The body 10 of the garment is preferably open along the front median line and is adapted to be closed along the said line by suitable fastening devices 11 such as buttons and buttonholes. The body 10 is provided with a neckband 12 and with sleeves 13, preferably short, and the said body and sleeves are preferably formed from a single piece of material, but the sleeves may be inserted, if desired. The shoulder portions of the garment are provided with transversely extending folds or plaits 14 which reach over the tops of the shoulders and down the front and back of the body 10 to gradually merge into the same a distance below the bottoms of the sleeves, as shown in Figs 1 and 2. The folds 14 on each shoulder portlon are approximately parallel and the inner edges of the folds are fastened to the shoulder portions by stitches 15 or similar.
fastening devices, the stitches terminating at the point of the beginning of the merging of the folds with the front and back of the garment.
By the arrangement described, the desired fullness in the front and back of the body is provided at all times and as the infant grows a fold on each shoulder portion has its stitches 15 removed so as to let out this fold and thus enlarge the shoulder portion correspondingly. In the course of time as the infant grows still larger the next fold is let out by removing the stitches 15 to again increase the size of the shoulder portions and thus give the desired comfort to the infant.
In practice, the inner edges of the folds 14 extend underneath and toward the neckband 12, as plainly indicated in Fig. 3, s0 that the folds appear on the outer surface of the shoulder portions and thus enhance the appearance of the garment.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A garment, comprising a body having a neckband and sleeves, the shoulder portions of the said body intermediate the said sleeves and the sides of the said neckband being provided with transversely extending exterior folds passing across the shoulder and a distance downward on both the front and back of the body, the lower ends of the said folds merging into the front and back of the body.
2. A garment, comprising a body open along the median front line and having a neckband and sleeves, the shoulder portion of the body intermediate the said sleeves and the sides of the neckband bein provided with integral parallel folds exten ing transversely across the shoulder portions and down the front and the back of the body and merging into the front and back of the body and removable fastening means connectlng the folds with the shoulder portions.
3. A garment, comprising a body open along the median front line and havlng a neckband and sleeves, the shoulder portion of the body intermediate the said sleeves and the sides of the neckband being provided with integral parallel folds extending transversely and merging into the front and back of the body, and stitches connecting the doubled-up edges of the folds with the shoulderportions, the stitches terminating at the front and back of the garment at the beginning points of the merging of the folds With the front and back.
4:. A garment, comprising a body having a neckband, sleeves, enlarging means at the top of the shoulder portions of the said body and extending from the said neokband to the said sleeves and temporary holding means for the said enlarging means to allow of periodically releasing portions of the said enlarging means to gradually increase the 5 size of the shoulder portions at the top, the front and back thereof.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
