conoEALEn Specification of Letters-Patent.
Patented Nov. 6, 191 *7.
A plication filed June1 8.17- SerialNc 125,333.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, O HoM. OTTE a, citizen of the United States, residing at t'he city of Jamestown, in the county of Chan- .i' tauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and HSGZEHlIIIlPIOX "GIILQIHJS in Concealed Hinges, of which the following, taken in connection with theaccompanying drawings, is a specification.
The invention relates to concealed hinges for ,doors andsimilar constructions; and the object of my-improvement is to provide an exceedingly simple and durable concealed single leaf hinge in combination with the door and cabinet or other supporting part to which the door isarticulated; and the in vention consists in the construction and;ar rangement of the parts as shown in this specification .and the accompanying drawings and pointed out inthe claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspectiye Viewv of the inner side of the cabinet and door or other supporting ,part showing the hinge with the door in the closed position,
- the parts being shown as madeofrsheet metal. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of a portion of the rear edge of thedoor; and Fig. 3 is a perspectire View of the hinge leaf showing the peculiar shapeof the same; and Fig. a is an interior View of the cabinet or other support for the door showing the peculiar arrangement of that portion of the cabinet to which the door is hingingly attached. 5 is a crosswise sectional View of a portion of the door and the corner of the cabinet showing the hinge and the door in the closed position. Fig. 6 is a sectional perspective View showing the door in the open position and the hinge leaf extending out through the opening in the cabinet; and Fig. 7 is a crosswise sectional View of the same.
Like characters of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views.
The numeral 10 designates the cabinet which has the inwardly projecting flange 12 around the door 11, and with the angular seat 13 therein for the door 11 and the opening 14 through which the concealed hinge is threaded.
The hinge consists of the spaced supporting plates or brackets 15 which are attached within the cabinet 10, having holes therethrough to receive the pintle 16 for the hinge plate 17. The hinge plate or leaf 17 has the eye or knuckle 18 through which the openingfla in th the pintle l6 is receiyedto thereby hinge the leaf 17 to thesupporting brackets lh.
' The leaf 17 extends rearwardly'fromthe eye 18 aspaced distance to proytide ,a stop against the inner wall ofthe cabinet lO when the door is inthe closed position; thence said leaf 1'? turns inian .angiilar bend a 19 and extends in a m-ma portion -21 which threads freelyback and forth through flange an, 13. passing around the inwardly extendinganglepfrthe anib, and striking against the edge 22, the

' he spaee fa ta hina plate r -s lficiently far apart to support the hinge plate 17 by the pintle 16 and the holes through the plates 15 for the pintle 16 must be at that point which will permit the free action of the return bend leaf 17 as it threads back and forth through the opening 14 without danger of interference of said door or the hinges therefor with the adjacent parts of the cabinet yet will seat the door on the flange 12.
It is now apparent that the door 11 may be hung upon two or more hinges like the one shown and will freely open and close, the articulation of the door by the single leaf hinge 17 being entirely concealed within the cabinet, and that the return bend form of the leaf 17 so shapes said leaf that it acts as a double stop, the part 19 striking against the inner wall )f the cabinet when the door is in the closed position and against the edge 22 of the opening 14 when the door is in the open position.
I claim as new 1. In a door hinge, a hollow sheet metal frame of U-oross section having an angular door seat, horizontal spaced plates secured to the inner face of the front of the frame llt) and having their ends engaging the respective sides of the U-frame, a vertical pintle secured at its ends to said plates, one side of said U-frame and said seat being formed with a vertical opening which extends through the points of juncture between the seat and U-frame and forming a vertical stop shoulder in said side of the U-frame, and a leaf secured at one end to the door and having a curved part extending through said opening, the other end of said leaf being bent at an angle to lie substantially parallel to the plane of the door and formed with a knuckle receiving said pintle, said angular end of the leaf being engageable with said shoulder and with the inner face of the front of the U-frame to serve as a stop in the opening and closing movements of the door, the sides of the U-frame extending at right angles to the plane of the door when the latter is closed, and said door when closed having its rear face and inner side edge ex tending over said opening to conceal the latter.
2. In a door hinge, a hollow sheet metal frame of U-cross section having a door seat extending outwardly from the inner side of the frame, said seat and said side of the framebeing formed with a vertical opening which extends through the points of juncture between the seat and inner side of the frame to form a stop in the latter, a pintle in the U-frame, and a hinge leaf secured at one end to the door and extending through said opening and having its other end connected to the pintle and arranged so as to Copies of this patent may be obtained for engage the inner face of the front of the U-fraine and said stop to limit the closing and opening movements of the door, the sides of the U-frame extending at right angles to the plane of the door when the latter is closed, and said door when closed having its rear face and inner side edge extending over said opening to conceal the latter 3. In a door hinge, a. hollow sheet metal frame of U-form in cross section having an angular seat extending outwardl from the inner side of said frame and to the rear of the front of the latter, a pintle in said frame, said inner side of the frame and said seat having an opening therein extending tiirough the points of juncture between said seat and inner side of the frame to form a stop disposed at said inner side of the frame, and a hinge leaf having parallel ends connected at one end to the rear face of the door and extending through said opening and having its other end extending beyond the front of the door and connected to the pintle and engageable with the stop and the inner face of the front of the U-frame, the sides of the U-fraine extending at right angles to the plane of the door when the latter is closed, and said door when closed having its rear face and inner side edge extending over said opening to conceal the latter. 7
In testimony whereof I have aiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses. A OTHO M. OTTE.
