Application filed July 25, 19.19.
. f whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL B. PARsoNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Delivery-Bodies, of which the following is a Specification.
This invention relates to delivery body doors and has for its object a delivery body door and hinge which permits the use of one or more doors inside the rear posts of the body but which can swing aroundthrough three-quarters of a turn into a position parallel to the side of the body. It is very desirable to have the doors of a de livery wagon swing clear around against the side of the body instead of through half a turn at a position at right angles to the body where they are very liable to be in the way of traffic. It is also desirable to have the door inside of the rear posts of the body as ii. makes a very much neater looking appearance.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a horizontal cross section of the rear of a delivery body and showing how.
the doors are hung.
Fig. 2 is a perspective of the hinge.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective of the hinge showing how the wings are reinforced. Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary View of the rear post and door of the delivery the door, to turn only through half a turn so that when it is at its limit of openlng it is projecting perpendicularly to the sides of the body. In this position, if it is struck from the rear by traflic, it is bound to tear the door off from the hinges. With my special form of hinge the door is capable of swinging clear around parallel with the sides of the body.
In the drawings a designates the side of.
tinuation of the anchor plate perpendicu-.-
larly thereto adapted to connect with the Specification of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 313,276.
Patented Nov. 23, 1920 knuckle and which will be designated the stationary web. f designates the L-shaped wing adapted to be screwed to the door 0.
This is provided with a narrow extension 9 which connects the wing with the knuckle and which will be designated the swinging web. Although this is an integral part of the wing f it is given a separate designation because it does not lie directly up against the door to which the wing is at- 1 tached but serves to connect the wing proper with a remotely placed knuckle i. The knuckle is formed in the usual way by notching and rolling up the ends of the two webs but of relatively light metal and still have strength enough to be durable.
Byplacing the anchor plate on theinside of the door post a relatively long anchor plate can be utilized and yet be concealed. The anchor plate can be made almost as long as desired, thereby effecting a much more secure support. a
The dishing of the swinging web '9 and the wing f-is roughly in the form of a Y but it enables this corrugating of the metal to not only strengthen the connecting web but those portions of the wingwhich are adjacent and which bear the major part of the load. The'dishing of the anchor C011".
necting web 6 is, slightly smaller than the dishing of the swinging web 9, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the two corrugated parts can nest one within the other.
What Iclaim isz The combination of a delivery body pro vided with rear door posts, one or more doors for closing the opening formed by the rear door posts, the said door or. doors set inside of the rear door posts and adapted to swing around to a position parallel with the side of the body, and supports for said door or doors comprising hinges, eachof which is provided with a stationary web running acrossthe rear face of the door post and an 1 1 anchor plate substantially perpendicularly arranged with respect to the stationary web and which is secured to the inside of the door post, a knuckle securedto the station- 7 ary web projecting beyond the side of the door post at the outside corner, a wing fastened to the rear face of the door, and a continuation of the wing beyond the edge of the door which forms a Web running across the rear face of the door post when the door 10 CARL B.
