WESLEY A. PAUL, DECEASED, LATE OF IVIOLINE, ILLINOIS, BY LOLAV'. PAUL, ADMINIS- TRATRIX, OF MOLINE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO DEERE &; COMPANY, OF MOLINE, ILLINOIS, A. CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
GLEVIS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented 0013.23, 191.7.
Application filed January 6, 1915, Serial No. 860. Renewed April 27, 1917. Serial No. 164,996.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l/Vnsrnr A. PAUL, late a citizen of the United States," and a resident of Noline, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, did invent certain new and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the completed clevis.
Fig.4 is a side view of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 illustrates a modification of my in vention.
In manufacturing my clevis a blank of sheet metal, of the required size and thickness, is subjected to the action of a suitable machine, preferably a power press, by which the perforations 2, 3, 4L and 5 are made and at the same time a portionof one edge of the blank is cut away forming the recess 6; simultaneously with the operation just described, a slot 7 is cut in the blank parallel with the upper edge thereof, the metal being cut on three sides only and bent outwardly on the remaining side to form the flange 8, substantially at right angles to the face of the blank 1.
The slot 7 in the completed article forms a recess adapted to receive a connection,
' such as a link by which the clevis is attached to the desired implement, the two being adapted to be held in engagement by a clevis pin in the sleeve 9, the clevis pin being shown in position in dotted lines in Fig. 4, the formation of said sleeve being more fully hereinafter described. The flange 8 forms a support on the connection keeping the clevis in a position substantially at right angles thereto.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for-five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, I
I then bend the blank 1 on a central vertical line without altering the position of the flange 8, which remains at right angles to the face of the blank.
During the above described operation the sleeve 9 is formed for the'reception of a clevis pin. The two sides, 10 and 11, of the blank 1 are brought, for a portion of their length, into parallel relation, the holes 3 and 4t registering and a bolt or rivet12 placed therein, holding the sides 10 and 11 together. The sides 10 and 11 diverge at an angle for an equal distance from their parallel portions and are then brought into spaced parallel relationship for the remainder of their lengths, the perforations 2 and 5 coming opposite each other to permit a'hitch pin being placed therein. ,By means of the holes '2 and 5, a hitchmay be made at any desired position. on'the clevis.
' In manufacturing'the modification of my invention, as illustrated by Fig. 5, the operation is the same as heretofore described,
with the exception the sides 10 and 11, of the blank 1, continue in closeparallel relation for their entire length.
My device is economical in construction and is much stronger and more desirable than a cast clevis.
What I claim is A clevis formed from a blank of sheet metal, the blankbeing bent upon itself at a central vertical lineand forming a sleeve 7 at the bend, a slot extending laterally of said sleeve and having a flange on one edge parallel with the slot, and perforations in 1 the blank on each side of the central vertical line, the perforations on one side adapted to register with the perforations on the opposite side when the blank is bent.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
