. Illinois Application -May My; invention" relates to devices particularly adapted for securing shanks of earth working devices to beams of cultivator frames, or to secure one beam to another and at an angle to each other. My device consists of a casting or holder formed to clamp two beams together by a bolt passed through the beams and the casting and secured therein, the drawof the bolt not only forcing the parts rigidly together but at the same time causing the casting to clamp the sides of the beam and the part mounted thereon as will be fully explained in the following specification.
Referring to the drawing in which similar numerals indicate identical parts- Figure 1 is a side view of a cultivator beam with a shank of an earth working tool-secured thereto by use of my device;
Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1; and, i l
Figures 3 and 4 are sections of my device.
My device consists of a casting 1 in which are channels 2 and 3 at a right angle to each other and on opposite sides of the casting; the channels are formed by flanges 4 and 5 projecting from the upper and lower sides, respectively, of the web 6 of the casting.- The flanges 4 and 5 do not extend the full length of their respective sides of the web 6, so that the web 6 projects beyond the ends of the flanges 4 and also beyond the ends of the flanges 5. At the termination of the flanges ithe projecting parts 7 of the web 6 are bent toward the ends of the flanges 4,
and the projecting parts 8 of the web 6 are bent toward the ends of the flanges 5. All of the flanges are reinforced outwardly and their inner or clamping sides 9, forming the walls of thechannels, have a slight outward inclination from each other to permit easy placement of the beam 12 and the shank 14. Centrally of the casting is a bolt hole 10 adapted to register with a similar hole 11 in the beam 12 and with any one of a series of holes 13, in this instance, in the shank 14 of an earth working tool, and through these holes a bolt 15 is inserted to hold the parts together.
In using my device the, beam and shank are placed in the channels 2 and 3 at an angle to each other, as shown in Figure 1, the bolt 15 is then inserted to extend through the hole in the beam, the web 6 andthe shank 14. and the nut 16 placed on the threaded end of the bolt to be turned to draw the parts together. vBy cutting away centrally the projecting parts 7 and 8 of the web 6, as shown at a in the drawing, the

My device is shown as utilized to secure a cultivator beam and the shank of an earthworking tool'together, but it is equally applicable to other structures where it is desirable to fasten beams together at an angle to each other.
. What I claim is 1., A clamping device consisting of a casting having two superimposed channels at an angle to each other, a web common to both channels, the
ends of each channel bent inwardly at an angle to the plane of the web, a flange on the opposite side of each bent end and forming the sides of Y thechannels, anda hole in the center of the web. 2. A clamping device consisting of a casting having two superimposed channels at. an angle to each other, a web common to both channels, the ends of the web in each channel bent inwardly to an angle with the plane of the web, a flange on the opposite side of each bent'end and forming the sides of the channels, saidflanges bent away fromthe adjacent face of the web, and a hole I in the center of the web.
3. A clamping device consisting of a ing the sides of the channels, the face of each being at a right angle to the'face of the bent end of. which it forms a part, and a bolt hole in the center of theweb. 1
4. A clamping device consisting of a casting casting I having two superimposed channelsat an angle to f" having two superimposed channels at an angle to each other, a web common to both channels,
the ends of each channel bent inwardly at an angle to the plane of, the web, and a flange on the opposite side of each bent end and forming the sides of the channels. a i
5. A clamping device consisting of a member having two superimposedchannels at an angle to each other, the ends of the web of each channel being bent inwardly at an angle to theplane of v the web; and disposed opposite the flanges of the other channel.
6. A clamping device consisting of a member having two superimposed channels at an angle to each other and having a common web, the ends of the web of each channel extending beyond the ends of the flanges thereof and being bent inwardly at an angle to the plane of the web and being disposed opposite the flanges of the other channel whereby when pressure is applied to the ends of the channel tending to bend them into the plane of the web a bending force is transmitted to the flanges of the opposite channel tending to bend said flanges inwardly.
7. The combination with a bar and an object to which the bar is clamped, of a clamping device adapted to be interposed between the bar and the object, comprising a base portion having a pair of spaced upstanding flanges for receiving the bar therebetween and a pair of extensions on the base portion adjacent said flanges, the contour of the face of the base portion adjacent the object together with the extensions on the base portion with respect to the contour of the object being such that when the bar is clamped to the object with the clamping device interposed between the object-and the bar, the'extensions initially contact the object, the clamping force imposing a bending strain, upon the extensions which is transmitted to theflanges causing thelatter to ceiving the bar therebetween, the contour of the. base portion adjacent the object with respect to the contour of the object being such that when the bar is clamped to the object with the clamping device interposed between thebar and the object, the base portion contacts the obj ect' initially at points adjacent the flanges whereby the clamping force imposes a bending strain in the base portion which is transmitted to the flanges causing the latter to bend inwardly and grip the bar.
