METHOD OF MAKING PLOW-POINTS.

'To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN F. MUELLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evansville, in the county of Vanderburg and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Methods of Making Plow-Points, of which the followin is a specification.
y invention relates to improvements in methods of making plow points and its object is to enable the same to be made from a single piece of steel or wrought iron with as few operations as possible. 1 am aware that it is not new to form plow points by bending a piece of steel, but 1t is also lmown that when a piece of metal is simply bent the resultant corner is round and requires additional treatment to square up. It is in this bending operation that my invention resides.
Broadly speaking, my invention consists in providing a ridge upon the face of a blank so that when the metal is bent along the line of the ridge, the material composin the ridge will compensate for the materia taken up in bending, and will thusform a square corner. 7
M invention will be described in detail hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 showsa rolled pieceof steel or wrought iron from which are stamped the blanks from which points are madeas shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is'a plan view of one 'of the blanks from which my point is {formed Fig. 3 is an edge view -of the blank shown in Fig. 2. Referringnow to the drawings 1 represents an elongated'sheet ofrolled steel or wrought iron, which has its lower face thickened at 2 adjacent one edge. The upper face of said sheet of steel is provided with a wedge shaped ridge or shoulder 3 Fig. 1 of the drawings, they are stamped .ob-
liquely from the sheet, so that the ridge or shoulder 3 extends obliquely across one edge of the blank. The blank thus formed is bent into the form shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings and the bending on the line of the shoulder forms a square corner as clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. The shoulder allows for the extra metal required in bending and it being of a V-shape the corner is approximately square. The point thus formed does not have to go through the usual rolling operation to form the square ihoulder at the point where the blank is ent..
Either before .or after the bending the acute point 4 is cut off along the dotted line, Figs. 3 or 4, and the metal is drawn out and sharpened to form a cutting edge 5 shown in Fig. 5,.which illustrates the oompleted'point. It will be observed that the thickened portion 2 strengthens the short bond side ofthe plow point, and also provides suflicientma-j terial to allow the point to be sharpened when dulled by use, thus increasing the durability of the .plow point. may be accomplished in any desiredway.
