TOILET ARTICLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 23, 19d 3.
Application filed August 8, 1916. Serial No. 113,729.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, Josnrri SZUHAY, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful improvements in Toilet Articles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in appliances for dressing the hair, and vhas as its principal object the provision of a device which is adapted to operate as a brush, a comb being combined therewith in such manner as to be conveniently available and a mirror provided so that the results of the brushing and combing operations may be readily observed.
A further object is to combine with the appliance, a hollow handle adapted to act as a container for other toilet articles, as -for instance, a tooth brush, whereby that the essential articles to perform ones toilet complete are always convenient of access, and iinally, to provide such an appliance of neat and attractive appearance, inexpensive of construction and durable in their nature.
These objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this specification, and in which Figure l is a perspective view, showing a brush made in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view, taken on line 2-2 of Fig. l, and
Fig. 3 is a partial rear or back plan view of the brush, parts being broken away to show the handle construction.
ln devices of this character, for performing necessary toilet requirements, it is desirable that both comb and brush be convenient and in order to arrive at such result, the combination herewith presented will be found very edective and satisfactory.
The central part l0 of the brush backing may be made of ordinary material as commonly employed for such purposes, one of the lateral parts 1l containing the brush tufts l2, the same being secured in a wellknown manner. Upon the opposite or outer surface of the brush is secured a mirror 14, regarded as an indispensable adjunct, while a comb 15 is inserted within a lateral recess 16, formed in the brush backing, as clearly shown in Figs. l and 2.
ln order to hold the comb in connection with the brush, springs 1S are secured at the ends of the comb, the springs being provided with a loop 19, closely adjacent to the back of the comb, a similar loop 20 being at the eXtreme inner end, which terminates in a hook shaped member 2l, adapted to engage with a pin 22, rigidly afXed in the brush backing so as to prevent the extraction of the brush beyond a predetermined amount.
N hen the comb is not in use, it is pressed into the brush, the loop 19 engaging with the pin 22, holding the teeth within the comb backing from which it may be withdrawnV by inserting the finger nail or the like into the grooves 23 formed in the ends of theouter teeth of the comb.
rllhus the comb may be extended in position for convenient use, and held in such position or, by exerting suflicient pressure, retracted within the brush backing where it is completely out of the way when using the brush.
The handle 25 contains a chamber 26 aecessible by removing the screw-threaded cap 27, so that minor articles of the toilet may be contained therein, as for instance, a toothbrush 28 and its removable handle 29.`
rlhe foregoing description, together with the drawings, are thought to be suiiiciently clear to render the invention clearly understood including its construction and use.
Having thus described my invention, what claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a brush of the class described, the combination with a backing having a narrow recess extending inward from one side toward the other, a straight-back comb adapted to be positioned in said recess, springs attached at their ends to the opposite ends of said comb and projecting therefrom approximately at right angles to said straightback, said springs being formed with spaced apart detent loops, and a pin set in said brush engageable with the mentioned detent loops whereby the comb may be limited in its outward and inward movements.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
JOSEPH SZUHAY.
