.NAME-PLATE FOR DUPLICATING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
lPatented Oct. 9, 191?.
Application ined october s, 1914. serial N6. 865,708.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. ADAMsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of tion type-written letters. l
In duplicating machines, provision `is madefor inserting name plates before each printing operation and removing the same after printing operation so that the body of the letter may be printed and with each vimpression thereof a different name, address,
and if desired, salutation may `be printed therewith. i v
Name plates of this type have heretofore been too'eXpensive for general use, and it is 25 the primary object of my invention to provide a simple and inexpensive construction inf which a plurality of type `units may Ybe assembled to print a name, address and salutation. i 30 `To this end the invention consists in a name plate havinga body portion provided at one end with an integral spacing flange and at its other end with a removable clampl ing member providedl with an integral spacing flange, said clamping-member 'retaining the assembled type units within the body portion, whichlatter is slotted to `receive said type units and also serves `tolholdthe name plate elevated so thatwhenl they are stacked vin a pile, those aboveand beneath will not come in Contact with the type.-
In the drawings,'-` y -Figure 1 is a plan view of a name plate constructed according to this invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken'` online 2-2,Fig.1. y l LL`Fig. 3 is a detached perspective view of the body portion of the name plate.
Fig. 4 is a detached perspective view' of the removable clamping member. v 'i The name plate fis constructed vof `sheet metal of the required gage to `assure rigidity of the same, and it comprises a body portion A anda removable end clamping portionB.
The body portion isof oblong shape and at one end has a downwardly and inwardlydirected spacing and supporting flange C which serves to stien the body portion and at the same time hold said body portion clevated. The body portion is provided with a plurality of transversely-disposed slots D which extend from one end thereof to within a short distance of its other end, and while I have shown two slots, any additional number `may be used, depending on whether or not a street address is desired or whether the salutation is to be printed separate from the .body portion of a letter.
In the drawings I have shown only the name of the addressee and city residence, but where a street address is desired to be printed, an additional slot will be required, Y
and wherefa salutation is to be printed with the name and complete address of the addressee, a fourth slot will be required.
As it is difficult to read the name and address from the type, the name plate is provided with a blank space above the slots, and on this space may be secured in any suitable manner a card K on which the name and address is printed so that the same can be easily read. l v
In each of the slots D the type units E are assembled to provide the desired matter and these type may be held in the slots by suitable retainers F which may be formed approximatelylike the type units but are of yielding material so as to prevent movement lengthwise in the slots.
, The removable clamping member B is formed of a strip of metal bent upon itself, as at G,to provide-two parallel clamping walls H separated by aspace of a size to snugly receive the unflanged end of the body portion A, the said end being clamped between said'wallsI-I in a manner to prevent accidental removal of the clamping member from said body portion. To facilitate the entrance of the unflanged end of said body portion into the clamping member, the upper wall H is flared, as at I. The lower wall H is somewhat wider than the upper wall H and provided with a right angular eXtension J which serves as a supporting iange vand cooperates with the iiange C of the body portion to hold the latter elevated, thus permitting the name plates to be stacked in a pile without having the faces of the type units come in Contact with any portionl of theA naine plate ebove. The type may be easily, disassembled by sleeping the removable-` cliniping member drawing the same outwardlyto'- disengage it*V from the body portion and then draw serted in the slots and retained by the taining members F, after which the removable end. clamping? meinber'nlay again forced overthe unflangedend of the body portion to securely hold the-type withiifi their receiving slots and also hold the metal of the body portion betweensaid slots' in alinement in a rigid manner'. The type units may be 'adjusted lengtlnvisefin y'tljie slots -as may be desired, ustlally th@ lines' formed by the assembled type in the slotsbe 'ind' 'ven a ste arranffelnet 2D i b Hfaving thus described my invention, what lelaini isf# Y 1.
