MANIFOLDING-BOOK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented dune 1a, 19Std.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, WILLIAM E. DUNNING, a citizen of the United States, residin at Alliance, in the county of Stark and tate of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manifolding-Books, of which the kfollowing is a specification.
The invention relates to triplicate sales books, inwhich it is desired to record an original and two copies of all entries; and particularly to that class of manifolding books in which a triplicating book is removably mounted at one side of an ordinary form of duplicating pad, so that the leaves of the triplicate book may be singly or collectively placed either above or below the vduplicating lpad or between the leaves thereof. v
- 'lheobject of the present improvement is to lprovide means for conveniently mounting the triplicating book in the same c over which carries the duplicating pad, so that `the t triplicating book can be readily removed and another one substituted, and so that when mounted in the cover the triplicate book will be held in proper position with reference to the side of the duplicating pad for operating the book as a whole. j
The object of the invention, `thus set forth in a general way, 4may lbe attained by the preferred embodiment thereof, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which;
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the mani` folding book showing the upper leaf of the cover opened to the left and the parts of the book assembled for use;
Fig. 2, a detached perspective View showing the triplicating book and its holder plate assembled for mounting in the cover;
Fig. 3, a perspective view of the manifolding book showing the method of arranging one set of original, duplicate and triplicate leaves; and
Fig. 4, a cross section of the book with the cover closed, showing the leaves of the triplicating book on top of the duplicating pa Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the drawings.
The cover of the book is preferably composed of the top leaf 1, the flexible back 2 and the bottom leaf 3, to the outer side edge of which bottom leaf is denibly consecte@- the holder leaf 4 01.1 the .upper end edge of which is secured the clamp 5, by means of which the stub end 6 of the duplicate pad 7 is secured to the holder leaf of the cover, and on the lower end of which is formed a thumb piece 4a for use in manipulating the holder leaf.
The duplicating pad 7, as shown, may be of the paragon type having a plurality of sets of original leaves 8 and duplicate -leaves 9 folded on a perforated or weakened line 10 with the upper end of the duplicate leaf 9 extended beyond the upper end of the original leaf 8, and all of these eXtensions are bound together in the usual manner to form the stub 6 of the book.
The double faced carbon sheet 11 has its upper end bound or secured on the top of the stubs so that it can be placed between each set of original and duplicate leaves 8 and 9 of the pad as the same are exposed for use by the successive removal of the sets of original and duplicate leaves above them, all in a manner well known in the art.
rl`he bottom cover leaf of the book is also provided with the pocket 12 formed by a sheet 12a of suitable material secured to the upper side of the leaf and opening along or adjacent to the adjoining edge of the flexible back 2; which pocket is adapted to receive and retain the flat body portion 13 of the holder plate 14 by means of which the triplicating book 15 is mounted in the cover.
The holder plate 14 has the upright iiange 16 formed or secured on the end which protrudes from the pocket, and the retaining bar 17 is located adjacent to the outer side of the upper edge 16EL of the holder Hange; which bar may be secured at its ends in the ears 18 formed or secured on the upper corners of the flange 16.
There is thus formed the narrow slot 19 between the holder edge and the retaining bar, into and through which slot the lower cover leaf 20 of the triplicating book 15 is entered and passed until the bound together folds l5a of the triplicate leaves abut and rest upon the free edge of the upright flange, after which the free edge 20a of the lower cover leaf is folded around the free edge 13a of the holder plate, whereupon the same is entered into the pocket 12 in the lower cover leaf of the manifolding book for mounting the triplicating book alongside the edge of the duplicating pad.
fte parte are ,S10 proportioned and er lll@ ranged that the upper edge of the upright flange and the adjacent retaining barare located alongside the upper edge ofthe duplicating pad before any leaves have been moved therefrom, as shown in the several views of the drawings, which enables the entire book of triplicate leaves, excepting the lower cover leaf thereof, to lie flatly upon the top of the duplicating pad, as shown in Fig. 4.
And .the'triplicate leaves are made enough wider than the duplicating pad so that in this relation of the parts the free ends 15b of the triplicate leaves will overhang the corresponding side edge of the duplicating pad to such an extent that the upper triplicate .leaves will completely cover the lower` leaves o`f =the duplicating pad when the upper leaves l-thereof are used and removed fromthe pad in-the usual. manner.
It is evident that by mounting the triplicate leavesvby these means, the folded and bound edges thereof will be sustained or supported by theupper edge of the upright flange of th'e holder plate and the adjacent retainingbar in proper position alongside and parallel with theside edge of the duplicating pad, and that the edge 2O*i ofthe lower cover leaf which is folded around the free edge of theiholder plate will be so held between the walls of the pocket 12, that the bound edges'of the triplicate leaves will be securely held upon the upper supporting edge of the holder flange, without the use of any clamping means at the side-edge of the duplicating pad.
In the operation of the manifolding book, thus described, it will be understood that the sets of duplicating leaves 7 and 8 are numbered consecutively from the top downward and the series of triplicating leaves 15, preferably made of tissue or other translu cent paper,- are numbered consecutively from the bottom upward, and that the corresponding leaves are assembled successively in seria-l order in the manner illustra-ted in the drawings and well known in the art for making duplicate and triplicate copies of all entries made on the original leaves.
I claim:
1. A manifolding book including a cover leaf having a pocket therein, a holder leaf flexibly connected to one edge of the cover leaf, a duplicatin pad mounted on the holder leaf, a holger plate inserted in the pocket, said plate havin-g a rectangular lange on .one edge and a bar alongside the edge of the flange, and a triplicating bool; havingone cover leaf enteredbetween the flange and the bar with the bound edges of its leaves restingo'n the edge of the flange and the free edge of its cover leaf folded around the edge of theholder plate opposite the flange.
2. Ainanifolding book including a cover leaf having a pocket therein, a holder plate inserted in the pocket, said plate having a rectangular flange on one edge and a bar alongside the edge of the flange, and atriplicating bookhaving one cover leaf entered between the flangek and vthe bar with the bound edges of its leaves resting on the edge ofthe flange and the free edge of its cover leaf -folded laround the edge of the holder plate opposite the flange.
