Be it known that I, RICHARD G. PARA N TAU, a citizen of the United States,.res1ding at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have 1nvented new and useful Improvements in Mops, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a mop. It isvan object of my invention to prov de a mop securingmeans adapted to be mounted upon a mop stick in a manner that Wlll insure its fixed position therein without the use of screws or other fastenings. I

An objectionable feature in most mop mountings is that the latter become loose after the mop stick has been in use for some time, and that the stick is liable to rotate within the mounting. s

It is another object of my invention to eliminate such a defect so that the mop mounting will under all conditions remain securely fixed in its original posltion on the mop stick.

Another object of th1s lnventlon 1s to provide a wiper clamp bar which is locked in position by means of a pair of lock springs or detents whereby said bar may be instantly removed or adjusted in position.

With the above and other objects in view Which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention consists in the construc tion and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, I have illustrated a convenient and practical embodiment of my invention and in which:

10 designates a cylindrical mop stick whose end 11 is enlarged, there being an intermediate tapered shoulder 11. One side of the end is cut away as at 12, for a purpose presently to be described. A sleeve 13 With a tapered end, and made preferably of malleable iron, fits over the end of the mop stick. This construction of the mounting of the mop stick in the sleeve prevents the rotation of the stick and. insures a permanent attachment between the two, not liable to come apart during the operation of the mop.

. The outer end of the sleeve 13 has formed therewith a cross head 15 which is provided with upturned ends 16. A pair of reinforcing 0r bracing members 17 connect the ends 16 with the inner end of the sleeve '13, said ends 16 andmembers 17 being preferably made of one piece with the sleeve and the cross head. The upturned ends 16 of the cross head are provided with cylindrical sockets 18 adapted for the reception of the locking arms 19 of a cylindrical wiper clamping bar 20. The under face of the cross head 15 is provided with a longitudinal semiylindrical groove 21 adapted to co-act with the clamping bar 20. The outer end of the stick may be provided with a similar groove 21 in alinement with groove 21. The locking arms 18 of the clamping bar are provided on their inner sides with a series of tooth-shaped recesses 22, the lower face of said recesses slanting inwardly and downward. These recesses coiiperate with look ing members or pawls 23 which are in the form of spring wire fastened to the upper end of the sleeve at 2 1. Said locking members are L-shaped passing from the point 24 adjacent to the sides of the sleeve 13, then horizontally outward through bores 25 on the inner faces of the upturned ends 16. The outer end of the locking members is pointed as at 26 to fit into the locking recesses 22.

From the foregoing description, the operation of the improved mop will be easily understood. After the sleeve with its cross head has been mounted on the end of the mop stick as described, the wiper 27 is placed over the clamping bar 20 and the locking arms of said clamp are inserted in the sockets 18 and pushed home. The points 26 of the locking members 23 will slide along the lower inclined faces of the recesses 22 and allow the clamping member to be moved toward the cross head as desired. When it is desired to remove the wiper, the hand is placed about the sleeve 13,

encircling the locking members 23, and the latter are pressed toward the sleeve, thereby withdrawing the points in engagement with the locking recesses of the locking arms, and allowing the removal of the clamp with its wiper. It should be noted that the locking members allow the movement of the clamping bar in a wiper clamping direction, but lock said bar when the same is noved in awiper releasing direction.

I claim:

1. In a mop, a handle, a cross head mounted thereon, said cross head having a vertical socket at each end, a clamping bar having upturned locking arms adapted to engage said sockets, said arms being provided on their inner faces with tooth-shaped pawl engaging recesses, and a pair of L-shaped spring wire pawls having pointed ends adapted to engage said recesses for locking said clamp in position, said 'pawls having their upper portions extending longitudinally of the lower end of said handle, and being adapted to be encircled by the hand and pressed toward the handle, whereby the ends of said clamping bar having means for engaging a pair of spring pawls, a pair of spring pawlsco-acting with said means to lock said clamping bar a gainst movement 1n a clamp releasing direction, said spring pawls being mounted on the upper end of said sleeve and extending longitudinally thereof; so that they may be encircled by the hand and pressed against said sleeve to Withdraw said pawls and allow movement of said clamping bar in a bar releasing direction.
