Description

A. F. L. MERZ.
BED TABLE.
APPLICATION FILED APR.26. I915.
Patented July 31, 1917.
.H UL H M ARTHUR F. L. MERZ, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
BED-TABLE.
Application filed April 26, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR F. L. MERZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bed-Tables, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tables and more particularly to bed tables, the principal object of the invention being to provide a simple and eflicient device of this character which may be applied to any bed, adjusted to any height and which may be shifted horizontally to bring the table over the bed, to one side thereof or to an out-of-the'way position.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view,
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings 1 represents a side rail of the bed which in this instance is used as a mounting for the attachment. This attachment consists of a vertical post 2 having parallel jaws 3 at its lower end arranged to straddle the side rail of the bed and with one of the jaws provided with a set screw 4 by which the post is clamped in position. The bracket arm of the casting generally indicated at 5 consists of an integral casting having at one end a post receiving barrow or sleeve 6 closed at its upper end and a semi-circular bearing 7 which partly fits around the lower portion of the post 2. At the opposite end of the casting a sleeve 8 is formed in which the table holding arm or post 9 is journaled. This post has adjustably mounted thereon a supporting collar 10 provided with a setscrew 11 and the upper end of the post has secured thereto a bracket 12 which carries Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 31, 1917.
Serial No. 23,945.
an integral frame 13 rectangular in outline and substantially L-shape in crosssection. l'Vithin this frame is mounted the tablle top 14 of glass or other similar materia Engaged with the bed post 15 is a clamp 16 having an extended ear 17 apertured as shown at 18 to receive the post 2. This clamp lies between the sleeve 6 and the hearing 7 and serves to hold the post 2 in vertical position as will be readily understood. The table attachment may of course be readily removed from the post 2 when desired, by simply lifting the casting 5 until the sleeve 6 is free of the post and then moving the casting laterally. The clamp 16 does not in any way interfere with this operation as the distance between the same and the bearing 7 is considerably greater than the length of the sleeve 6.
hat is claimed is An attachment for beds comprising a support having a channeled base to fit over the side rail of a bed, a clamp for connection with the post of the bed movable vertically upon the support and having an ear through which the support projects, a tray and a bracket connected with the tray and having at its upper end a sleeve to receive the upper end of the support, a semi-circular bearing formed on the lower end of the bracket and embracing the support at a point above the channeled base, whereby when the bracket is moved vertically upon the support the sleeve will be disengaged from the support and the semi-circular bearing permitted to slide over the ear of the clamp without the necessity of detaching the clamp from the bedstead upon the removal of the bracket from said support.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
