Description

July 24, 1923.
A. A. HARTMAN ET AL PORTABLE TABLE Filed Oct. 12 1922 I Patented July 24, 11923.
untrue PORTABLE TABLE.
Application filed October 12, 1922. Serial No. 593,998.
To all whom it may conceive Be it known that we, ARTHUR A. HARTMAN and VVILLIAN C. SornvAnznAoH, both citi- Zens of the United States, and residents of Janesville, in the county of Rock and State of lViseonsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Tables;
and we do hereby declare that the following is a full. clear, and exact description thereof.
This invention relates to portable tables. Objects of this invention are to provide a combined portable table and book-rest, to
provide such an apparatus adapted to be detachably and adjustably secured to a vertical post, such as a post of a bed, for instance, to provide an apparatus which may be adjusted to vary its distance from the post and its angular setting about the post, and to provide an apparatus which is adapted to over hang a bed in an adjustable manner.
Further objects are to provide a combined table and book-rest so a ranged that the table portion may be rocked upwardly and its under side used as a book-rest, to provide means for both supporting and yieldingly holding a book, or similar article, in position, and to provide means to prevent any spilled liquid from running off the table.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the apparatus, showing it in the position to be used as a table and showing in dotted lines the position it assumes when used as a boolerest.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the structure shown in Figure 1, portions being in section to more clearly illustrate its formation.
Figure 3 is a sectional view upon an enlarged scale on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, it will be seen that the apparatus is adapted to be adjustably mounted upon a vertical support 1, such as a bed post. It is provided with a casting 2 having a t -shaped portion adapted to receive the post 1 and having a second V-shaped portion 3 detachably associated with the main portion 2 and provided with a clamping screw 4 equipped with a hand wheel 5 at one end and with an engaging notched portion 6 at its other end, whereby the post may be clamped between the portions 2 and 6. The members 2 and 3 may be conveniently connected in a detachable manner by providing outwardly extending lugs 7 upon the member and by providing coacting inwardly directed lugs 8 upon the member 3-stops 9 may be provided integrally with the lugs 2, if desired, to limit the motion of themember 3 in one direction.
A squared hollow rod 10 is secured within a hollow extension 11 of the casting2 and may, if desired, be removably secured therein by means of the screw 12. This rod terminates at its outer end in a collar 1-3 provided with a set screw 14lpassing through the collar and through the rod 10. A second and smaller hollow rod has its angular extension 15 telescoped within the rod 10 and adjustably clamped therein by means of the set screw 14?. This smaller rod has a right-angle bend 16 therein and laterally projectingportion 1'? which is adapter to overhang the bed, for instance. The table and book-rest comprises a wooden plate 18 provided upon one side with a beaded edge 19 and provided upon its other side with outwardly bowed spring clips 20 secured at their outer ends, as indicated at 21, and having free inner ends 22. An outwardly projecting ledge 22 is provided along the lower edge of theplate 18 upon the book-rest side, as may be seen from Figure 2. This ledge 22 is adapted to support the book, or other article, while the spring clips 20 retain it in open position fiat against the plate 18.
This combined table and book-rest proper has a pair of metal straps 23 secured thereto and provided with twisted, flat, outwardly extending terminals 24. These terminals 24: are secured by means of pivot pins 25 to upwardly directed ears 26 of squared collars 27 slidably mounted upon the portion 17 of the smaller squared rod. Either one or both of these collars may be provided with a set screw 28 so as to lock the device in its adjusted position laterally upon the rod 17. These supporting collars are provided with a horizontal upper portion 29 which may be slightly extended, if desired, and which provides a support for the terminal portions of the strap 23 when the device is in the position shown in full lines in the figures. The collars are also provided with upwardly and rearwardly directed lips 30 against which the terminal portions 24 are adapted to rest when the device is turned up into the book supporting position.
It will be seen that a combined table and book-rest been provided, which may be nae-asses secured to any vertical support, which may be extended both outwardly from the support and laterally, which may be placed in a horizontal position and used as a table, and which may be tilted rearwardly into an upwardly slanting position when it is used as a book-rest.
We claim i r 1. A portable table comprising means for adjustably engaging a vertical support, an arm' extending horizontally outwardly therefrom, a second arm telescopically asso- 'ciated with said first mentioned arm and having a horizontally positioned angularly arranged extension, collars adjustably mounted upon such extension, a table pivotally secured to said collars and adapted to occupy either a horizontal position or an upwardly slanting position, and means upon the under side of said table for engaging a book, said collars having means carried thereby" for supporting said table either in itshorizontal or upwardly slanting position, whereby saidtable may be freely rocked into the two positions and retained therein.
2. A portable table comprising means for adjustably engaging a vertical support, an arm extending outwardly therefrom, a second arm telescopically associated with said first mentioned arm and having an an gularly arranged extension, collars adjustably mounted upon such extension, a table pivotally secured to said collars and adapted to occupy either'a horizontal position or an upwardly slanting position, a ledge upon the under side of said table adapted to support a book, and spring clips upon such under side adapted to retain a book in open position.
3. A combined table and book-rest comprising a clamp adapted to engage a vertical support, a hollow, square rod extending outwardly therefrom, a smaller square rod telescopically positioned within said first mentioned rod, means for locking said rods in ad usted position, said smaller rod having a laterally extending portion, collars adjustably positioned upon said lateral 'por tion, each of said collars havin a s uare o aening therethrou 'h corres aondin to the r, b t:
contour of said latter portion and having an upwardly extending ear, a horizontal upper portion and a rearwardly and upwardly slanting lip, a pair of straps pivotally joined to said ears and adapted to rest against either said horizontal portion or said up-v telescopically positioned within said first mentioned rod, means for locking said rods in adjusted position, said smaller rod having a laterally extending portion, collars adjustably positioned upon each lateral portion, each of said collars having a square opening therethrough corresponding to the contour of said latter portion and having an upwardly extending ear, a horizontal upper portion and a rearwardly and upwardly slanting lip, a pair of straps pivotally joined to said ears and adapted to rest against either said horizontal portion or said upwardly extending portion anc table secured to said straps, said table having a marginal head around its upper side and having book retaining means upon its lower side.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands at Janeeville, in the county of Rock and State of ll isconsin.
ARTHUR. A. HARTMAN. lVlLLlAM G. SCHYVARZBACH.
