To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALVAH BUSHNELL, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphla and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Envelops, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in envelops, and has for its object to provide an exceedingly simple and this character, whereby when the contents are placed therein, both the edges at the open end of the envelop are folded over so that if any object is inserted between the body of the envelop and its flaps at, either end, said object will'not enter the envelop compartment, thus protecting the contents, preventing them from being withdrawn, of said object.

. A further object of the invention is to weaken the back or protecting flap, so that the same maybe readily and easily cut or separated from the body of the envelop by an envelop opener or any object used for this purpose. i

A still further object of the invention is to provide an envelop with a back or protecting flap, the same being divided from the back portion of the envelop body by perforations, said perforations extending only partway across the back of the envelop, all the way across the same or across the back and the side tongues.

With these ends in view, my invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.

In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, in which Figure 1, is a back elevation of the envelop with the sealing flap open.

In carrying out'my invention as here embodied 2 represents an envelop blank comprising a front member or wall 3 of any de-. sirable shape and size, a sealing. flap ,4. formed with one edge-of the front member or wall 3'and produced in any desirable shape and size, the same adapted to be folded over upon the completed envelop along the line 5 and'having upon its inner face a suitable adhesive 6, a back member or Wall 7 also formed with one edge of the front member 3'. and of suitable size and configuration adapted to be folded upon the front member along the dotted line 8, a pair of side tongues 9 of any suitable size and configuration formed with opposite edges of the front member'and adapted to be folded upon the dotted line 10 either on the inside or outside of the back member or upon themselves, one face of each of said tongues hav ing a suitable adhesive applied thereto whereby the parts may be fastened together.

In that form of envelop shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive the back member 7 is provided with perforations 11 extending transversely along a line approximately parallel and adjacent to the free edge of the back member. or adjacent the open end of the envelop, thereby forming a protective flap 12, which when the sealing flap 4 is folded over upon the. body of the envelop, is folded over T0 ALvAH Patented July 31, 191 7.- Application filed July 6, 1916., Serial N 0. 107,792.

. proximately upon the back member 7 along the line of perforations as plainly shown in Fig. 2. In one form of my envelop the perforations 11 terminate short of the edges of the back as shown in Fig. 3, so that the full strength of the front member, back member and side tongues adjacent the ends of the envelop is utilized.

In another form of my envelop as shown in Figs. f and 5, the perforations 11 in the back'm'ember 7 are ekte'nded entirely across said back member, and other perforations 13 are formed in the side tongues 9, thus weakening the entire back portion of the body or the envelop and permitting the flaps to be readily separated for opening the en-' velop.

In Fig. 6, I have shown the back member 7 provided with the perforations 11 extend ing entirely across the same, but the side tongues 9 are left intact, so that the strength of two 'unweakened thicknesses of material is utilized. I I

In Fig. 7 I have shown an entirely clifferent construction of envelop in which the side tongues 9 extend entirely across the body of the envelop adjacent the open end thereof, and these side tongues are each provided with a row of perforations 13, but the back member is imperforate regardless of the distance that it overlaps the side tongues.

The showing in Fig. 8 is a slight variation of the "construction illustrated in Fig. .7, the only difference being the size, shape and configuration of'the side tongues and back member. a I

In Figs. 9 to 12 inclusive I have shown the back member folded upon the front member similar to the envelop shown in Fig. 1 with the side tongues extending apthe entire height of the envelop body and the back member, although very narrow, so that they overlap the back member a=very short distance.

In Fig. 9 the back member is perforated only partway across the same, and in Fig. 10 the back member is perforated entirely across the same, and in addition thereto the side tongues are perforated while in Fig. 11 the back member is perforated entirely across the same, but the side tongues are unperforated.

In practice the contents of the envelop are placed in the compartment it formed by the front, back and sidetongues and the sealing flap is then folded over the back member of the envelop along a line parallel to the -per forations 11, and the folding over of said sealing flap also folds over the protective flap 12 along the line of perforations 11 as plainly shown in Fig. 2. a

Should anyone attempt to reach the contents'of 'the envelop by inserting an object between the flap and the body of the envelop at theend or'edge thereof, said object WVhen it is desired'to open the 'envelop the j object used'su'ch as an envelop opener is inserted in between the flaps, the envelop, and then drawn along the envelop with a cutting motion, such as is ordinarily used for opening envelope, and because of the weakened condition of the back member along the line on which it is folded,

and the body of said envelop may be readily and easily opened. H 7

Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as herein shown, as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention. v
