FURNITURE.
Specification of Letters Patent. 7 i
Patented July a, 1917.
I I Application filed November 17,1915, 1 Serial No. 61,975.
To all whom it may concern; I
Be it known that I, VINGENZO MASSACESE,
a subject of the King of Italy, residing at New Yorln in the countyof New York and State of New York, have invented new and ilseful Improvements in Furniture, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in furniture, an object being to provide an articleof this classwhich may be easily and; quickly converted from a couch I or singlebed to a davenport or from a davfurther object of the invention is' to provide an article of this class whichshall embody the desirable features of simplicity,
cheapnes's and thorough efiiciency. A 5 With the above and other objects in view, the improvement, resides in the construction,
combination and arrangement of parts set forth in thefollowing specification andfalling within the scope of the appended claims. Figure lisaperspective view illustrating the device set up as a single bed or couch,
{Fig 2 is atop plan viewwith the back or auxiliary frame folded over the top frame, 'fflFig. 3 is an endview showing, the device Fig. ,4 is a detail horizontalse'ctional view approximately on the line 4+4 of Fig. 3,
position illustrated in Fig. 2, and
Fig. 5 is an end view of thedevicein the IFig. 6 is ,adetail view showing the hook engaging in the opening in oneof the'ears l to hold the members 9 and 26 in one position, theearbeing in section,
I In carrying 'out my invention 1 construct 1 amain body or frame portion of a substan- 4O tiallyc, rectangular formation which includes end members arranged in suitable perforations 17 in the intur'ned flanged portion of .the angular member'15, but the free ends vertically disposed corner posts 1 arranged two at each of the ends of the body or frame. The corner posts 1 preferably are constructed of angle irons and each 'pair at the opposite endsof thebody or frame are connected with upper and lower transverse members 2 and 3frespectively, the upper connecting members 2being also formed of angle irons and, having their horizontal flanges extending inwardly to theends of the device, while the lower members S'm'ay be in the nature of flat bars, and the said bars are more effectively secured to the corner posts by angle braces ii:- The corner posts, adjacent their lower ends are also connested by longitudinally extending strips or body of the device.
bars 5,;and these 'bars'are likewise braced by angular members 6 which are secured to the saidbars 5 as well as to the respective corner posts 1. The upper connecting members 2 for the posts project. a suitable dis tance beyond the. outer corner posts, and the horizontal flanges of the same are provided with spaced perforations to receive the end convolutions of suitable springs 7 providing thespringbottom for the main portion or The lower transverse connecting bars '3 adjacent the outer corner posts of the device have alining'openings through which passes a longitudinally extending member in the nature of a rod 8, and this rod has its'ends bent angularly, as at 9, and'the lower connecting members 3 areprovided with outwardly extending flanged portions or lugs which are'adapted to receive and provide a rest for the said angular ends 9, when the deviceis set up as a double bed, as clearly illustrated inthe drawings. c
The ends of the upper connecting mem- V lbers 2 and 3 may be provided with suitable longitudinal connecting, elements, but in practice, I have found that by regulating the tension of the spring bottom the same providesan effective seat for the device.
The vertical flanges of the upper connecting members 2, adjacent the outer corner posts 1 thereof are also provided with angular extending portions or lips 11, and each of said lips is'provided with an opening 12. The inner corner posts have secured to the vertical flanges of the said connecting members 2 projecting ears 13 which are adapted to lap against similar cars 14 provided upon the angle end members 15 of the back or auxiliary frame. The spring bottom has its ofdsaid angle members are connected'by a longitudinally extending rod 18. The ears 13 and i iare pivotally connected, as at 19, and pivotally secured, as at 20, to the outer members of the angle bars 15 are leg sections 22. Each of these logs comprises an angle member and has one of its flanged portions cut angularly below the pivot so as to provide a shoulder 23 against which the inner flanged portions of the members 15 rest when the legs 22 are swung to a vertical position and the device set up as a double bed The legs 22 are connected by a lon gitudinal strip or bar 24 and the saidbaris reinforced by angularbrfac'e'siv-25 which are connected to the legs as well as to the said strip.
The numeral 26 designates one arm ofan said end of the portion 9 of the .rods 8. These pivots :30 are provided with an \outer head 31 and with an inner 'angular ,portion or hook- 32, and the said .hooks are adapted to be swung to engage with the openings 12 in thelips 11 of the main body orframe "whemtheframe 16 isswung at aright angle or in a line with the vertically disposed inner legs of the mentioned main ,l frame to sustain the device in set up position -as a davenport. v r
A mattress 33 which is centrally .foldable is secured to the springs of both the main frame or body and to'rthe auxiliary ,frame,
so that the mattress may he bent or folded upon itself when the frame 16 is swung over the main frame and the device set up as a single bed. lnrthiszlastllinstance it will be noted that the angular arms [9 of the rod '8 rest upon the lugs 10, upon which they :are :also arranged when the device is set up as a double -bed as previously set forth. a
Having thus described the:invention, what I claim is ,1. :In a -convertiblei article of furniture, a main frame including corner posts and an :auxiliary frame .pivotally connected to the mainframe and adapted to be swung and a a andthrough the saiden'ds "of the rods, said a pivot including a h'ea'd upon oneofitsends retained over themain frame, at an angle with ,respectto the main frame, or in :a line with vthe main-frame, outwardly extending ears upon the sidesadjacent the top andbottom of the main frame, swingingilegs upon the auxiliary frame, each of saidil egs Ihavingan ofl'set fiangeto engage withithe auxiliary frame when the same is sustained at :a fright @angle :to themain .iframe, :an angular meniberpivoted to each of lthevl'egs, an'angular ,rod pi-votally connected to each of the sides of :the main .frame,-.a .rotatable'lhook member comprising a pivot andconhecting reach of the rods with each of the angular copies at this p'aten'tima ,-be obtained 'for members, said rods adapted to rest upon the .loweraears'ofthe-main frame when the auxiliary frame is swung over or in a line with "respect to the main frame, and the hookpivot members adapted to engage with the upper ears of the main frame *to sustain the oifset flanged portions of the legs into contact with the auxiliary frame, and to hold the said auxiliary frame at a right angle to'the main frame when the same is ibroughtfto such position.
2. a convertible article of furniture, :a .main frame including. angular corner zposts upper and lower transverse members connecting the ,posts, longitudinal members connecting the ,posts, angular braces for the connecting members, a r'odupassi'ng throughthe lpwer connectingimembers, said rod'hav-i ing its ends arranged angularly, an ofiset member upon the "lower; connecting members serving as a rest fonthe angu'lar "ends of the rodwhen in one ,positiomY-the upper connecti11g members :forfithe, corner jposts having an 'outturned ear provided with an orifice, the'iinneracorner eposts'having vertical extensions, an auxiliar frame 'havingextensionslappingthe said extensions of the-main j frame andtpivo'tally Secured thereto, the said vrau-xiliary frame having "its end members formed of angle irons, legs pivoted to the said ends, said legs being also-formed of angleirons and having one of'theirpor tions out to provide a shoulder "to support the ends, of the auxiliary frame when the same is swung horizontally of themain -"fr'ame,
flon'gitudina'l connecting members "for the legs, an angle member upon each of thelegs and :having one of its :ends pivoted to each of'the;said"legs,the-opposite end 'o'fthe angle member being ,provided with ears receiving "the ends of the angular p'ortions of therod,
a pivot member passing through "the ears and a hook upon its opposite end, and the said hook adapted to swing to engage with openings in the ears of the mainframe when jthe aux'ifli'ary framejiismoved to a vertical 7 five cents each. by addressing the Commissioner -61: Patents; WaSIiingt'onfDJ'O'. 1 i
