DAVENPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 1'?, 1917.
Application filed April 29, 1914. Serial No. 835,294.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at 1452 Filbert street, in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invent= ed a new and useful Improvement in Davenports, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in davenports, and more particularly to-conu. Y
vertible sofa beds.
Among the objects of this invention are to provide a convertible sofa, having a mattress foldable within said sofa, and
To provide sufficient room between the folds of said mattpess to contain the bed clothing without undue compression, whereby a fully made up bed may be folded within the sofa.
The preferred form of putting this invention into practice is illustrated in the drawings accompanying and forming part of the present specification, to which like reference characters are applied to the va rious parts. The novelty of the invention is included in the claims following the description, but l do not wish to be understood as limiting myself, to the disclosures made in said drawing and description, as many modifications are available within the spirit of this invention as defined in said claims.
Figure lis a side elevation in longitudinal cross section of a convertible bed constrncted in accordance with this invention, shown in the unfolded position.
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the lsame showing the bed in the folded position.
Fig. 3- is a fragmentary detail in cross section of the link hinge by which the swinging section of the sofa is supported.
Fig. tis a fragmentary detail in front elevation of the supporting leg for the outeredge of the swinging section of the sofa.
In detail the construction illustrated in the drawings includes the sofa frame, hat. ing the front posts 1, the rear posts 2 and the sides 3. The back of the sofa between the sides 3 may be upholstered as indicated in the dotted lines 4. The rectangular mattress frame is composed of the side sections 5, 6 `and 7, joined by the links 8 and 9 on opposite sides of the frame forming hinges by which the mattress is folded upon itself as in Fig. 2. The mattress frame is preferably composed of angle iron including the ends l0 and 11, forming a rectangular frame within which any desirable spring mattress surface may be suspended; that form preferred by me consists of a wire mesh center, suspended by spiral springs at intervals engaging said mesh and the frame.
The head section is supported by the swing arm l2 pivoted at 13, on the plate li, fixed to the side board l5 joining the posts 1 and 2. The other end of the arm 12 is plvoted at 1G, near the end of the head sec tion. The side bars 5 are hinged on the pins 17 in the links 8. The links 8 are supported b v the brackets 18, pivoted thereto on 'the pins 19 and fixed to the hinged seat section 2O of the sofa. The side bars 6 are centrally supported by the swing arms 21 pivoted thereto at 2 2 and at 23 to the seat section 20,'the opposite ends of the bar 6 hinging on the pins 24C and 25 in the links 8 and 9 respectively. The foot section is supported by the side rails 7, pivoted on the pins 2G in the links 9, the other ends being supported by the pins 27 upon which the v legs 28 are hinged. These legs areheld in the proper upright position by the latches 29 pivoted at 30 on. the legs and having slots 31 engaging the pins 32, fixed in the sides 7; 'when theflegs swing to the upright position, the latches automatically drop into position so that the lateral notches 33 forming part of the slots, engage the pins 32 as shown in Fig. 1. The hinged seat section 20 is supported bv the legs 34, pivoted at 35; when this section is swung open these legs drop into position by gravity. This section 20 is hinged to the main sofa frame by the links 35, pivoted at 36 near the opposite corners of this` section. The upper ends of these links are pivoted at 37 on the bracket 38, extending upward from the plate l14; these links thus supporting theV inner side of the section 20, and permitting its proper evoluthis position the latches 29 are released from the pins 32 which permits the legs 28 to collapse and lie within and parallel with the side rails 7. The notches 39 on the fixed latches 40, that are rigidly fixed at the proper angle to the legs 28, engage the studs 41 extending outward from the sides 6. T he resiliency in the bend 42 permits the latches 40 to spring sufiiciently, to engage the studs 41, with the proper tension. In opening the bed, these latches 40 are released by sufficient pull on the cross rod 43, having its opposite ends riveted through the legs 28.
Vith the Jfoot section .thus folded back over the intermediate section, the seat scction 20 is swung upward and inward on the supporting links 35. Theconnecting arms 44 are pivoted at 45 on the brackets 18 and at 46 on the bell crank levers 47, fulcrumed at 48 on the plates 14. rIfhe opposite ends of the bell crank leversare pivoted at 49 to the connecting arms 50, in turn pivoted at 51 to the side rails 5 of the head section. The inward swing of the seat section 20, causes the connecting `arms 44 operating through the bell cranks 47 and connecting arms 50, to pull downward the side rail 5 of the head section; simultaneously the tensions of the spiral springs attached to the head rail 10 and the brackets 53, fixed t0 the back board 54 of the sofa frame, pull the head section inward and downward until the seat section begins to descend from the vertical, the side rails 6 and links 8, hinging on their centers 17 and 24. In the folded position the link 21, centers the section 6, inside the seat section 20.
The weight of the descending seat section With its 'associated parts, depresses the head section to the position shown in Fig..2. The tensions of the springs 52 assist in carrying the various pivotal members past their dead centers, until the weight of the folded parts, completes the various closing actions by gravity; thus making very easy the action of closing or folding up the bed. Having passed the dead center, these springs react to ease the descending weight of the folded mattress; and similarly aid in the opening operation, that is obviously, simply a reversal of the closing operation;
The legs 34 drop` by gravity from the latches 55, into which they drop by gravity during the closing operation; the last act in' spreaders X extending across the frame and attached to the links 8 and 9. The spreader" is omitted from the drawing between the links 8 to avoid confusion. The plates 14 with the various parts attached thereto and pivoted thereon are introduced as a convenience in assembling the mattress in the sofa; in this manner insuring the proper relation of the part.
Having thus described this invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A folding bed comprising a main frame, a. swinging seat hinged near the front edge of said main frame, a. jointed mattress having head, intermediate, and foot sections, swing arms pivoted to said head section and said frame, swing arms pivoted to said intermediate section and swinging seat, supporting legs on said foot section, a
bracket mounted on said seat between the head and the intermediate sections, a lever pivoted intermediate its ends on the main frame, a connecting link pivoted to said bracket and to one end of said lever, and a link pivoted to the head section and to the other end of the lever. f
2. A folding bed comprising a main frame, a swinging seat hinged near the front edge of said main frame; a jointed mattress having head, intermediate, and foot sections; swing arms pivoted to said head section and to the main frame; a lever pivoted on the main frame; a link pivoted on said head section, and to one end of said lever; a link pivoted to the opposite endof said lever and to said swinging seat; and supporting legs on said foot section.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto, set my hand this 16th day of April 1914.
FRANCIS MARTIN.
