JOHN POSTOLOWSKI, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ENVELOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 312, 1217.
Application filed January 29, 1917. Serial No. 145,115.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1., JOHN Pos'roLowsKr, a subject of the (lzar ofltussia, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to envelops and has special reference to improved forms of blanks for 'envelops and envelops made therefrom.
One important object of the invention is to provide an improved form of blank for envelops having interlocking opposed flaps.
A second important object of the invention is to provide an improved envelop wherein both the end flaps and the top and bottom flaps will interlock in pairs, the whole being of improved and novel form.
A third important object of the invention is to provide an improved arrangement of interlocking and adhesive tabs on the flaps of envelops of this description.
With the above and other objects in view, as will be hereinafter apparent the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the.
accompanylng drawing, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and
Fi ure 1 is a plan view of a blank for fommg an improved envelop in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a similar viewwith the end flaps folded and connected.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view envelop completely folded.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing a modified form of envelop.
Fig. 5 is a.plan view of the modified form with the end flaps folded and connected.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the modified form completely folded.
In carrying out the objects of the invention and in the form of the device illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 there is disclosed a blank having a rectangular body 10 surrounded by fold lines 11 which define the body from end flaps 12 and top and bottom flaps 13. Each of the end flaps is provided with a terminal tab which is defined from the body of the end flap by a slit 14, the
showing the slits being tapered from the outer end to the interior end and being arranged in opposed relation. These end tabs are pro'vided with gumme'd fields 15 and/ each has a central fold line 16 which extends from the point or tip of the respective tab inward to the inner end of the respective slit 14.
The top and bottom flaps are triangle shape and each rated tab 17 provided with a gummed field 18, the tabs being arranged in staggered re lation.
In folding an envelop of this form the tabs of the end flaps are bent on the fold lines 16 and the ends brought together as illustrated in Fig. 2, the tabs being then moistened and pressed down so that each tab adheres to the body of the opposite end flap. Then the top and bottom flaps are folded so that the tab on the bottom flap overlaps the top flap and the tab on the latter overlaps the bottom flap as clearly shown in Fig. 3. These tabs being moistened, then. serve to seal the envelop. It is to be noted of a general that by reason of the serrations on these tabs the adhesion of the tabs to the respective top and bottom flaps is such that it becomes practically impossible to ogpn the envelop without tearing the tabs w ile at the same time the tabs are of such small dimensions that but little gum is needed and there fore great economy is effected in this respect.
In the form of the device shown in Fi s. 4, 5 and 6 there is provided a body 20 efined from end flaps 21 and top and bottom flaps 22 by fold lines 23. Each of the flaps carries a similar semi-circular top 24 having a gummed field 25 covering this inner surface and defined from the respective flap by a V-shaped slit 26. Moreover each of these tabs is provided with a medial fold line 27.
In folding this form of the device the end flaps are brought together after folding the tabs up on the fold line and these tabs are then moistened and pressed down, the tab on each end flap adhering to the opposite flap. In like manner the top and bottom flaps have their tabs folded, moistened and pressed down, so thatthe tab on each adheres to the other.
It will be noted that in this form also great economy in the use of mncilage is effected.
flap carries a ser-' fore desired to confine the inventionto the exact form herem shown and described but it is Wished to include all suchas properly comewithin the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. A blank for envelops consisting of a' rectangular portion, .end and top and bottom flaps defined from the body portion by fold lines, tabs on opposite flaps defined from the flaps by V-shaped slits and each having'a medial fold line extending in the direction of the length of the flap, said tabs having their under surface provided with a gummed field, other tabs on opposite flaps arranged in staggered relation and provided with serrated outer portions, the under side of the last-mentioned tabs being provided with a gummed field.
2. An envelop consisting-of a body, end and top and bottom flaps, said end flaps being provided with interlocking tabs overlapping the opposite flaps and guinmed thereto, said top and bottom flaps being provided with tabs gummed to the outer surface of the opposed flaps when folded, the lastmentioned tabs beilsg rated outer portions.
