FOLDING PAPER BOX. j
Application filed April 2,
This invention aims to provide a box which may be fashioned cheaply, the box being strong in construction, and present 'ing, when closed, the appearance of an article that iscoveredby-a folded wrapper.
It is within the province 'of the disclo-' sure toimprovegenerally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains'.
lVith the above and other objects in view" which will-appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in'the combination and arrangement of parts and in-the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, with- 7 out departing tion.
in the drawings: 1 Figure 1 shows in plan, the blank out of which the cover of the box is made;
Figure 2 is a plan wherein the blank of higure l is shown partly folded;

parts being broken away;
Figure 8 is a fragmental perspective showing a portion of the completed base of the box. a
The blank out of which the cover C. is
fashioned, is made ofpasteboard, or any other suitable material. The blank is shown in Figure 1 and comprises a rectangular body 1 having end flaps 2, disposed opposite to each other, and a first side flap 3 and a second side flap 4 disposed opposite to each other. The first side flap 3 has a first ex tension 5, the area of which is about equal to the area of the body 1. The side flap 4 has a second'extension 6 which is of much less area than the extension5. The side flaps 3 and 4 have terminal wings 7. Slits 8, disposed opposite to each other, extend 1nwardly from the edges of the end flaps 2.
is a transversesection of the 1921. seriainaisasui There are slits v9 'in the transverse edges of the extension 5, and these slits define fingers 10. In thelongitudinal edge of the extension 5"tl1ere are slits 11 forming a finger l2. Tongues 14 maybe formed in the extension 5, near to its longitudinal edge. The ex-' tension 6 has openings 15 located opposite PENNS LVANIA,IAssI NoR or oNE-HALr to the tongues 14. The longitudinal edges of the body 1' are shown at 16, and the transverse edges of the body 1 appear at 17.
On the endflaps 2 there arelines 18 that connect the inner ends'ofthe slits 8. ()n the end flaps 2 there are lin'es 19-alined with the ends 20 of the wings 7; the end flaps 2 converge from the outer ends Lines 21 on ofthelines 17land'l9 to the inner ends of v the slits S. Theline22 ofjuncture between" Wings 7. The line 24 of juncture between theextension 6 and the side flap i isal ined with the edges 23-of thecorresponding wings 7. A line 25re xtei'i'ds across the flap 4 and the adjacent wings 7 in parallel relation to the line2l and is located midwav of the width ofthe flap 4:. A line 26 extends across the flap 3 and thecorresponding Wings 7 in parallel relationto the line 22 and is located midway of the width of the flap Lines 27' mark the juncture betweenthe side flaps 3 and 4 and the wings 7. It is understood that the elements referred to as lines need notactually be inscribed on the blank; I
They-may be produced merely in the folding operation, but thev-have been described and alluded to as lines to the end that the operation folding the blank to form the cover C jmay the more easily be described.
The flap 3 is folded together along the line 26 and turned up along the line 16 to form one side wall of the cover, and the extension 5 is turned up along the line 22 as in Figure-1. The flap 4 is folded together along the line-25 and turned up along'the line 16 to form the opposite side wall of the cover, the extension 6 being folded along the line 24 to overlie the body 1. The wings-7 (having been folded together along the lines 26 and 25) are turned inwardly along the lines 27, at right angles to the sides of the cover, to form the ends of the cover, and the folded wings 7 are telescoped as at 28. The corners 29 formed in the end flaps 2 by the slits 8 are bent along the lines 21 and are Fig. 8, and the cover, as thus far completed,
appears as shown in that figure. The end flaps Z then are folded at 18 over the edges ofthe wings 7, and the inner parts of the wings 7 are bent along the lines 19 to form flanges that overlap the body 1, asshown at the right hand end of Fig; 4. The extension 5 is turned down parallel .to the body 1,,
in overlapped relation to the flanges 30 and the extension, 6', thefinger 12 is engagedbeneath the extension ,6, the tongueslt on the extension 5 and engagedin.the openings 15.
of the extension. i6, and the fingers 10' on the.
extension 5 are; engaged beneath, the; flanges 30 on the terimnal \vmgsfi.
In Figures? and 8 of: the drawings, thev base B 1 of the-.boxis shown, the basewbeing adapted tobeused in connection with .the cover C,- lnFlgures 7 and, S, partshereinbefore described have .been designated byv numerals vpreviouslynused, with the suffix a.? Theemodification consists in omitting the slits shown at :8,in Figure.1, and the;

Three means are provided for holding downthe fiTSUeXtBIlSlOIIii on the body 1,
