The flaps are bent at right angles to the body and suitably secured in place, as for instance by a strip of paper engaging the sides and ends of the box, and turned in at the top and bottom. A covering sheet is then applied to the bottom, completing the covering of the box. The boxes are also covered by a single sheet of paper, wrapped about the box, with the edges turned inupon the inner faces of the flaps.
The tapes which. are of fabric material of suitable dimensions are usually connected to the boxes by passing the ends'of the ta e through slits in the bottom, prior to the application of the bottom covering or label. With this arrangement a considerable length of each tape is outside the box, between the bottom and the covering paper. The. arrangement provides for an unsightly pro tuberance on the bottom at each tape, and should the tape be twisted or in any other condition than flat upon the bottom, the finished box would be defective.
One of the primary objects of the present invention is the provision of a box or box part, wherein tie tapes or ribbons are connected with the box in such manner as to present a minimum amount of tape outside of the box, while at the same time the tape is firmly anchored to the box.
.Another object is the provision of an arrangement of tape such that the small amount of the tape outside the box is so situated with respect to the box that the protuberance in the covering paper caused by such part is least noticeable.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts fully described 192?. Serial No. 193,206.
hereinafter, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, andpointed out in the claims appended hereto, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from invention. 1

In the embodiment of the invention shown, the improved box is formed in the usual manner, from a blank comprising a bot tom 1, side laps 2, and end flaps 3. These blanks are cut or otherwise formed. from stock, the blank being in eii'ect a rectangular piece of material with the corners notched as shown. The box is creased for scored on lines at and 5 connecting the notched corners, the scored lines indicating the boundaries between the flaps and the body.
In completing thebox, the side and end flaps are turned up at right angles to the body, as indicated in Fig. 3, and held in any suitable manner. If desired, a coverflap or sheet such as is indicated at 8 may be inserted at the top of the box. This flap or sheet is of suitable material, having one edge secured to a side flap of the box near the top, as indicated at 9, the arrangement being such that the flap may be turned into the box over the goods, or outwardly to enable access to the goods.
In boxes of thischaracterit is usual to provide holding tapes or ribbons for the goods. The tapes or ribbons are extended transversely of the box and the ends are adapted to be tied overthe goods to hold them neatly in place. As previously pointed out, the tapes have heretofore. been held in place by passing the ends thereof through slits in the bottom, the body of the tape being beneath the bottom, with the ends the spirit oi the of a box blank in the box. This arrangement provides for an unsightly box bottom, and requires care in the placing of the tape to prevent twisting or folds.
in the present invention, the tapes indicated at 10, of which there may be one or more, are held in place by tabs struck up from the material of the box. These tabs may be struck up at any desired point in the bottom, or even in the side flaps near the bottom. They are arranged in pairs transversely of the box, and being formed at the same time that the blank is cut or stamped, the formation of the tabs does not in any n'ianner increase the cost of the box.
lVhile as previously stated the tabs may be struck up from any desired point of the box, they are preferably struck up at the corners, and in such manner that each tab includes a part of the side wall or flap of the box, and a part of the bottom. As shown in the preferred position, each tab comprises a portion 11 from material of the body, and a portion 12 from the material of the side flap. The tabs are formed when the blank is cut and scored, by cutting through the material on are shaped lines, the tabs being bent along the lines connecting the ends of the arc, the said line forming a hinge for the tab.
In the present instance a single pair of tabs is shown, arranged at about the transverse center of the box, but it obvious that a pair might be arranged near each end of the box if desired, thus to provide the box with two tapes. The score line or crease outlinin the side flaps on the bottom of the box defines the two portions 11 and 12 of each tab, and provides a bending line, so that the tabs do not interfere with the bending up of the side flaps.
In making up the boxes from the blanks, the tabs are lifted in any suitable manner to substantially the position in Fig. 2. The tape 10 is then inserted beneath the tabs as shown in Fig. and they are pushed back into place. carrying with them a part of the tape. The sides and ends t .e now folded, and the box is wrapped. The folding of the side flaps bends the tabs along the line 13 dividing the portions 11 and 12, and this bend or angle between the portions 11 and 12 forms a lock to prevent displacement of the tabs into the box.
\Vith tabs arranged in the preferred position, the portions of the tape outside the box are less noticeable, and no handling to which the box would be subjected in the usual course could displace the tabs. Only unusual and exceptional stress, such as would work great injury to the box could displace the tabs in either direction. They are held by the tape and also by the bend or angular formation against displacement. The tapes may be held in place by means of adhesive applied to the underface of the tabs or the wrapper may be relied upon to hold them in place. The wrappers are usually gunnued throughout their extent, and the adhesive on the wrapper secures the tape thereto and to the box.
\Vhat is claimed as new is:
1. A box part blank including a body and side and end flaps, and having integral holding tabs formed from material of the box and connected thereto along a straight line to facilitate bending of the tabs laterally from the plane of the material, said tabs being arranged in pairs transversely of the box, and the tape or ribbon being held beneath the tabs with the tabs in the plane of the blank.
2. A box part blank including a body and side and end flaps, and having integral holding tabs for a tape or ribbon. said tabs be ing formed partly from the body of the part and partly from an adjacent flap whereby to assume an angular formation when the blank is bent to shape.
5. A box part blank including a body and side and end flaps, and having integral holding tabs for a tape or ribbon, said tabs being formed partly from the body of the part and partly from an adjacent flap whereby to assume an angular formation when the blank bent to shape, said tab being unequally divided between the bottom and the flap.

13. A box part blank including a body and side and end fiaps,,and having a plurality of holding tabs for a tape or ribbon, formed by severing the material along a curved line, the ends of the line of severance spaced apart to provide a straight line hinge connection, the hinge connections between the tabsbeing in alin-ement.
