UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2443,90? FOLDED BOX Paul Flach, Dhemnltl, Germany application mmh sa, 193s. serial No. 13,54:
` In Germany March 29, 1934 21 oisans. (ol. zza-s4) 1 This invention relates to folded boxes, -and on to the part I in the manner shown on the more particularly to those in which the cover right-hand side of the drawing, these recesses and bottom part are each made-from a separate take on the shape of a quarter of a circle, and cut-out or blank in such a manner that the side in the box when folded together serve for receivwalls of which two opposite ones are provided at ing the locking tongues 8 which are provided on the ends with extensions for folding in, can be the narrow sides of the end wall tabs 9, 9 atconneoted together by means of tabs provided on tached to the parts 2, 2 by folding lines 9a or 9b the other opposite side walls or end walls. The in such a manner that their free straight edges. invention relates to the particular method of lie in the extension of the folding lines Illa, lub
l locking the tabs with the side walls of the box connecting the tabs 9 with the adjoining strips l0 member which do not belong thereto. This locklll. The form of the tongues B corresponds to ing is effected by locking tongues provided on the that of the recees 'L tabs being introduced into corresponding cuts or The blank is folded together in the following recesses in the side walls. Apart from the semanner. First the flaps 6 are folded down on to l curity which this locking offers the -loosthe paris'l, as shown in the right-hand part of l5 ening.r of the box member on account of the par-l the drawing, and stuck down. Then the parts 4 ticular method of making the recesses for the are folded downon to the side walls 3 and stuck 'locking tongues, the further advantage is cbth'ereto (Fig. 2a). The side walls 3 are then tained of an extraordinary strengthening of the raised, and care is taken that their extensions 5 2o corners of the box member and a high stability turn inwards, which requires these extensions to 2o thereof. be turned at right-angles. In the same manner as described breadth, and at the narrow sides the terminal exf both the bottom Vpart and cover part can be made 45 tensions 5, 5 are attached.. At the narrow sides for boxes with lids. The new arrangement, howof the parts 4 there are hinged'aps 6, which are ever. can naturally be used for folded boxes of shown on the left-hand side of the drawings fiat, other kinds, All this applies also to the forms but on the right-hand side folded over on to the shown in Figs. 2-4. 5o Dart-s4. Fbrfurtherincreasingthesecurityofthelock-m symmetrically to the lines Ga-and 6b connecting. in the form illustrated in Fig. 2, the recesses lng the naps 6 wit-h the part 4, in the construcfor receiving the locking tongues are cut away tional form according to lug. 1, semicircular reunderneath, in s `ch a ma'nner that the recess in cesses 1 open 'on the outside are provided in the the flap lwhich comes to lie on the inside when Y u parts l and l. when the ps 6 folded over Y the box'is folded together, overlaps the edge of the recess of the tongue, which produces a doubled depth of the rest, forming a kind of fold so that the locking tonguescan enter behind the overlapping edges in the locking position.
As shown in Fig. 2 the construction of the blank is fundamentally the same as in the previously described construction; it differs essentially only in that the recesses 1 do not lie exactly symmetrical with respect to the lines 6b as the part la in the flap 6 is somewhat greater than the part 1b in the tab 4, so that when the flap B is folded over the part 4, as shown on the right-hand side on the drawing, the edges of the recesses 1a, as shown on the left-hand side above by the broken line, are set back behind the edges of the recesses 1b, and when the part l is foldedinwardly over the part 3, the edges of the recesses 1b, with the edges of the recesses 1a, will form under-cut folds in which the locking tongues 8 can slide when the box is folded together. 'Ihe locking tongues can then not readily come out of their places, as they are held by the projecting edges of the recesses 1b. The size of the locking tongues 8 corresponds preferably with that of the recesses 1a.
In the constructional form according to Fig. 3 the construction of the blank as regards the parts I-Ill is substantially the same asin Fig. 2. There are, however, further or secondary flaps II hinged on to the primary flaps 6 at I la, which are provided with recesses I2 in the form of a quarter circle. The recesses I2 and la lie symmetrically with respect to the folding lines IIa.
The blank is prepared as follows. First of all the flaps II together with the flaps B are folded about the line 6b over on the parts 4. The flaps II are then folded in a reverse direction about the line IIa, leaving a part of flap Il projecting parallel to terminal extensions 5 and beyond the part l. This procedure may of course be reversed by rst folding part II backward on line IIa and then folding flaps 6 and II along the line Bb. The result in both cases is shown on the right-hand side of Fig. 3. In this position the parts are gummed or otherwise fastened together. I'he blank is then ready for dispatch. The folding together to form the box is effected as in the previous cases by the side parts 3 rst being raised with the superposed extensions 5 and II turned inwards at rightangles after which the end walls 2 are raised and the tabs 9 are folded inwards so that the locking tongues il engage in the places formed by the recesses 1a, 1b and I2 and the strips I0 then lle on the bottom of the box.'
By the construction of the blank according to Fig. 3 the security ofthe locking of the locking tongues is further increased because the edges of the place for the locking tongues consists of three layers of material; in addition, since the side walls of the box near to the corners have four layers of material a further reinforcement is obtained of the corners of the box, which are specially sensitive to mechanical strain.
The construction according to Fig. 4 in which, for the sake of simplicity, only' a part of the blank is shown, differs from those described above essentially in that the recesses I2 in the flaps II lie symmetrically with the recesses 1b of the parts 4 with respect to the folding lines IIa between the flaps II and 6 in such a manner that when the flaps II are folded over the flaps G and over the parts I, the recesses I2 and 1b coincide. In this case also the recesses 1b are made somewhat smaller than the recesses I2, in Order t0 form under-cut edges. Furthermore, another folding line I2b is provided in the extension of the edge I2a of the recess I2, which, when the ap il is folded over about the line IIa, as illustrated on the right-hand side of Fig. 4, coincides with the line 6b between the flap Ii and the part 4. The inner parts of ap II will then coincide with flaps 6. These coinciding parts will thus extend beyond parts 4, and parallel to terminal extensions 5 as shown on the righthand of Fig. 4. These coinciding parts may then be turned inwards together with extensions 5 when the side walls 3 are raised. The aps II are again gummed or otherwise secured to the parts I which are also secured to the parts.3. The folding of the box from the blank thus formed is effected in the manner described above. In this way there is obtained near to the corners of the box a three-fold thickness of material for the longitudinal walls, a five-fold thickness for the narrow side or end walls and a corresponding reinforcement of the corners of the box. The edges of the places for the locking tongues 8 also have two layers of material.
As a particular advantage for all the constructions described it may be mentioned that the new construction of the locking parts, on account of the great security of the locking obtained thereby, makes possible a very rapid and convenient working in folding together the blanks, which is of great importance as re gards manufacturing costs, since it is mainly a question of hand work.
Where in the above description, as well as in the claims, a folding box is mentioned this must be taken to include not only a complete folding box consisting of a lower part and a cover part, but also the lower part or the cover part alone. The construction is claimed also not only for the completely folded box or box members, but also for the blank, whether completely spread out or in a set, in which. as shown in the right-hand side of the drawings, individual parts of the blank are secured by adhesive or stapling.
