FRIEND M. LEISURE, 0F TEMPLETON, PENNSYLVANIA.
ENVELOP.
. Specification of Letters Patent. Patented'NoV. 23, 1909.
Application filed September 3, 1909. Serial No. 516,067.
To all whom t'tmaf-y concern:
Be it known that I, FRIEND M. LEISURE, a citizen of the United States of America,`re
of Armstrong and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops, of which the following ls a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
rThis invention relates to envelops, and
' the invention has for its objeet to provide an envelop with simple and effective means for positively sealing the saine, thereby preventing the envelop from being surreptitiously opened or tampered with without the act being detected.
The above object is attained by providing the fiaps of an envelop with slits and using a plurality of straps adapted to have the ends thereof retained in the envelop by the contents, while the other ends extend through the slits. of the aps and are adhesively coated or gunnned, whereb the straps can be moistened and inserted 1n the envelop to adhere to the inner sides thereof.
My invention will be hereinafter considered in detail and then claimed, and reference will now be had tothe drawing forming a part, of this s )ecitieat-ion wherein there is illustrated a pre erred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that the envelop can be made of various sizes and shapes without departing from the'spirit ofthe invention.' y x In the drawings: Figure l is aplan of a piece of paper or material adapted to be folded to form my improved envelop, Fig. 2
is a similar view of the envelop folded and sealed, ltig. 3 is an enlarged cross sectional view of the same, and, Fig. et is a perspective view of one of the straps of the envelop.
In the drawing 1 denotes a rectangular body provided with end fiaps 2 adapted to fold upon the body, a bottom flap 8 adapted to fold upon the body and the end tiaps 2, and a top Hap' 4 adapted to fold u on the body, end flaps 2 and body a 3 to c ose the envelop. The end flaps 2 anc. .bottom flap 3 fold upon thp d ot and dash line 5, While the top flap 4' fol ds upon the dot and dash line 6. It 1s at this line that the flap 4 is profy vided with a plurality of longitudinal slits or slots 7, preferably three in number, one at each end-of the Hap 4 and one intermediate the ends thereof. The end liaps 2 are provided with longitudinal slits -or slots 8 and the bottom flap 3 with a slit or slot 9, the'slits or slots 8 coperating with the end slots 7 and the slit or slot 9 with the intermediate slot 7. y
In connection with the envelop I use straps 10 adapted to have the lower ends thereof folded or bent, as at 11 to be engaged by the lower edge of the letter or .epistle l2 placed in the envelop, while the upper ends of the straps extend through the slits or slots 7 into the slits or slots 8 and 9. The ends of theI straps are coated with an adhesive material or gunnned,as at 13 and are adapted to be moistened and inserted in the slits or slots .8 and t) to adhere to the tia s 2 and 3. I reserve the riUht to um P e g both ends of the straps and to make the straps of a sulicient width to prevent the top flap 4. from being surreptitiously opened.
The envelop and the straps are made of pape-r, paperoid or a `strong and durable materia.
Having now described my invention,.what I claim as new is:`
An envelop comprising a body, end flaps carried thereby andadapted to fold upon said body, said end flaps being provided with slits, a. bottom tiap adapted to fold upon said end flaps, said bottom fiap being' provided withva slit, a. top flap adapted to fold upon said end fiaps and said bottom Hap, said top flap at the folding line thereof being provided with a plurality of slits .adapted to cooperate with the first mentioned slits, straps adapted to have their ends bent and retained in said envelop by the contents thereof, said straps adapted to extend through the slits of the top flap into the slits of the end and bottom flaps, and said straps having the ends thereof gummed to adhere to the inner sides of said end andbottom flaps, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I atiix my signature in tht"J presence of two witnesses.
FRIEND M. LEISURE Witnesses:
